This document discusses fatigue in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). It presents conceptual definitions of fatigue including overwhelming exhaustion, persistent tiredness, and decreased capacity for work. The Middle-Range Theory of Unpleasant Symptoms and a Middle-Range Theory of Self-Care of Chronic Illness are adapted to understand how fatigue impacts self-care maintenance, monitoring, and management in CHF patients. Negative outcomes of fatigue on physical functioning, role performance, cognitive functioning, and adherence to self-care are explored.
The document discusses common symptoms experienced at the end of life including anorexia/cachexia, dehydration, nausea/vomiting, and bowel obstruction. It defines each symptom, describes possible causes and assessments, and outlines pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions to manage the symptoms as part of palliative care. The goal is to skillfully manage symptoms based on best evidence while attending to patient and family needs.
Palliative care aims to improve quality of life for patients with life-limiting illnesses through early identification and treatment of pain and other symptoms. Palliative care takes a holistic approach addressing physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs. Dyspnea, or breathlessness, is a common and distressing symptom experienced by over 50% of hospice patients. A thorough history and assessment of dyspnea is important to identify potential causes and guide treatment options. Both non-pharmacological and pharmacological interventions can provide relief, including opioids, benzodiazepines, oxygen, bronchodilators, and corticosteroids. Active management of dyspnea is important during the last hours of life to minimize suffering.
This document discusses several prominent middle range nursing theories, including Pender's Health Promotion Model, Leininger's Culture Care Theory, Transitions Theory, and the Synergy Model. It provides an overview of the development and key concepts of each theory, such as Pender focusing on factors that motivate health behaviors, Leininger emphasizing culturally congruent care, Transitions Theory addressing life changes, and the Synergy Model matching patient and nurse characteristics. The document also notes how the theories are frequently used in both nursing research and practice.
4. illness behavior and perceptions of illnessM.Vijaya Rani
This document discusses illness behavior and perceptions of illness. It covers several key topics:
1) How people determine when they are ill based on their ability to function and the presence of symptoms. Cultural factors can also influence symptom perception.
2) Common illness behaviors people engage in when sick like self-medication, and factors that influence help-seeking behaviors.
3) The "sick role" concept where sick individuals have both rights and obligations in society, such as being exempt from responsibilities but also expected to want to get better.
4) How illness representations, or people's beliefs and understanding about an illness, can impact their response and behaviors. Recognition of symptoms alone may not be enough to consider oneself ill
This document discusses the critical role of nurses in pain management and the widespread inadequacy of pain treatment globally. It notes that 4 out of 5 people lack access to essential pain medicines, with 99.9% of untreated pain deaths occurring in low and middle-income countries. Nurses are often ill-prepared to properly assess and treat pain due to lack of education. The document calls for improving pain management education for nurses and addressing cultural fears and lack of resources surrounding proper pain treatment, which is considered a basic human right.
