Margins is the area around the
edges of a page. You will want to
avoid placing pieces of text.
Margins can help you frame your
work also.
Columns are used to layout your
page in a more readable and
approachable way. Columns are
good because it makes your text
look less blocky if its just one big
piece of writing. Columns look
neater and they also add more
room for images.
FontThe cover date, the
cover date is the
date the magazine
was published.
Page numbers
Cut out, a cut
out is where a
photo cut out
and the
background is
removed. This
adds a
professional look
and it helps
make room for
images or your
page.
Grids have been used to
make sure all the text
and pictures are in-line.
Grids are guidelines that
can come in lots of
different layouts. This is
a magazine layout.
White space
Spread: Spread is a layout that goes across more then one
page. Here I have an example of a double page spread.
Double page spreads are very effective and eye-catching in
magazines because you can put lots of text on one side of
the page and on the other side (like shown here) you can
write little text and add more pictures instead.
Here we have an examples of
drop capitals. Using drop
capitals is an effective way to
start off a paragraph. It’s a
way of capturing the viewers
attention to get them to read
on.
Page number: page numbers are
simple but very important as
they guide readers through the
newspaper.
The headliner is the
main title of the article
Pull quote: pull quotes are
placed into a page to grab the
viewers attention. They can be
in different fonts, colour,
weight etc. this is to help make
it stand out to the rest of the
article.
There is a border used
here for the edges of this
photograph. This is top
separate the photo from
the photo behind it. This
helps the image stand
out.
Text wrap has been used here around this
this frog on this article. Text wrapping is an
effective way of laying out text because it
allows room for images and it also adds a
more interesting look then just a block of
writing or columns.
A strapline is text after
the headline. It gives
more information abut
the article you are
reading. This is
important because it
intrigues the reader
into reading more.
Visual hierarchy
Here is a invitation I have made for a creative media show. I have made the title of the invitation the most
interesting by making it the biggest of all the text on the invitation. I did this because I want the first thing you look
at to be the name of the event. Reasons for me doing this are to attract the viewer straight to the point and then to
intrigue them into finding out more. I also made the font of the text different to all the other text on the page to add
that same effect. Its interesting, easy to read and professional. I made the subjects of the event underneath smaller
and in a different font because all its job is to do is inform the view what's occurring at the event. Even smaller
underneath that is the information on the location and the dates. This is because it’s the boring but vital parts of the
invitation. It doesn't’t need to catch the viewers eyes first but its information they need to know. I made the text go
from big to small to make to viewer read it in that order
Here is a poster I made for a rock concert event. Firstly I made venue the biggest text on the page to instantly tell
the viewer where the venue is at. I also made the colour of the text red, I did this because the other text is black
and the background is yellow. The reason I made it red was to really bring out the title, as its on a bright yellow
background the bright red really stands out. Red and yellow are bright colours that can be seen from quite a
distance so I think this is an appropriate colour choice for a poster. Underneath the title is the main headliner of
the night. I made the text smaller then the title but not as small as other liners because ‘Broken Arrow’ is the
main event. I positioned it right underneath the title with only a small gap to spare. This is to make it look nice,
neat, easy to read and follow. The headliner is also positioned closer to the title then the other liners because I
feel as if the headliners is also apart of the title and its just as important. For the rest of the liners I have made
the text smaller and I've made it look like the liners and underlining the headlines just like you would underline a
title. I've also made it like this so you read everything I order, the title, the headliner, the liners and underneath
is your information. I've placed the time of the event underneath the last liner because in my experience people
seem to forget the time to an event more then the location so, I've placed it with the title and the liners. Lastly at
the bottom in a different font is the headliners social media account and the date. I've place the social media
account at the bottom on the left because its not as important as the event and the actual text its self isn't
intriguing. Its only intriguing if you want to know more about the band but not everyone wants to know more,
that’s why its smaller. In the right hand corner at the bottom is the date and the price. This is important
information I think you need to know last because that’s the decider if you can make it or not. I don’t want the
viewer to look straight at the date I think am not reading the rest because am busy that day. I want the viewer to
read everything because they might read the bands and love the line up and instead of being busy that day they
make time.
Here is a quote I have taken from the rapper J cole. Firstly I made the quote nice a big so the viewer can easily read
the quote. The font looks neat, elegant and soft. I picked this font because the quote its self is meaningful and it
makes you think. I don’t want the font to be aggressive or in your face because the quote isn't coming across that
why. J cole has a broad fan base and a lot of j coles fans are women. I aimed my work towards them as I don’t think
there isn't many feminine posters on j cole. This made me carefully select my colours to a light purple background
and white text. I picked these because I think they look soft and feminine together. I wrote j coles name at the
bottom to reference the quote and I placed his well known logo at the top of the text. Fans will recognize this and
it also adds a bit more then just a quote but at the same time its nice and simple.
Grids
Here is a website I've created its 8 column vertical grid. Firstly I've placed the title of the website right in the center of
the page because it looks neat and I want it to be the first bit of text you see. Its also placed with in the grid to make
sure its neat and tidy. The categories of clothing underneath is in a smaller and its in a different font. This is because I
want the brand logo to be the brightest text on the page because the brand logo is what's on the clothes. The categories
of clothing are spaced out and fit perfectly in the gird to make sure its professionally done and neat. In the back ground
are clothes that are purchasable on the website. I put them there for the viewer when they enter the website they see
something they like straight away so the go look and buy it. I've also turn the opacity down so the categories and title
still stand out.
Here for my double page spread for the grids I chose 5x5. I did this because it helped me place my main title, subtitle and text. I designed my
magazine this way because it looks simple but I think simple is effective. On the right you have Stormzy with lots of nice bright colours, your
attention is drawn straight to Stormzy as you turn the page. Then your eyes slide over to the left. Here you will see a nice big title and a subtitle.
The title is positioned dead center and so is the subtitle. I chose the main title to be the biggest font so when you’re reading the article you go
down in order, title, subtitle and text. As you can see there is a lot of white space but, I feel as if its suitable for my article as I wanted that simple
look. There is two simple, not too long, easy to read columns of text that I think work really well. As a whole I think it looks professional and I’d
happily give this a read.
Here I have a 3x3 tabloid newspaper. As you can see
this tabloid has its classic bold logo, with its big
headline and adverts. When designed the tabloid I
decided that no more headlines needed to be added
to the front because the headline is so outrageous I
feel as if It would need to take up most of the space.
As you can see the adverts fit the 3x3 grids. This
allowed me to design my tabloid nice and neat. The
big headline text is fit nicely within the grids to also
tidy things up. As a whole I agree this tabloid screams
at your face and it will grab your audiences attention
of the shelves.
Task 4 – copy editing
it started when I realised that cows don't just produce milk all
the time for the fun of it, cows only produce milk for their baby
cows, and baby cows have four stomachs to digest said milk, it's
not really meant for humans. Who even first decide to drink
cow boob extract anyway? Cheese is just mouldy cow boob
extract,7and eggs are chicken period.... Nice.
The first paragraph doesn’t read very well, so I have
changed to the following.
I started looking into the environmental impact of the dairy
industry and that made me really start questioning my eating
habits. I realized that cows, like humans should only produce
milk for their offspring. Instead cows are bread specifically for
human consumption. There are lots of articles that say it is bad
for you
I have changed the following so that it reads better, mush
isn’t a food , it’s a term that they have chosen to use.
What are your favorite meals/ snacks?
I eat a lot of mush, mush is just a mix of lots of veg and spice all
whizzed together. Doesn’t look to great but you can make it into
burgers, into soups or toppings for baked potatoes and it tastes
amazing.
I eat a lot of vegetables and mix them up together into a mushy
texture. I make burgers, soups and toppings for potatoes with it.
3) Have you felt any advantages/disadvantages from becoming
vegan? (health, missing out on anything etc.)
It's stressful because people are constantly telling you that
you're not getting enough protein, and every time you’re ill it's
apparently because you're vegan. But ultimately I feel a lot
more energetic, its easier for me to manage my wait (weight),
my skin is a lot better and it forces me to think properly about
what I am putting into my body and what I'm getting from it.
I have reduced the words and corrected a spelling mistake
A lot of people constantly tell me that I’m not getting enough
protein, and each time I am ill, they say it’s because I am vegan,
but I feel a lot healthier and more energetic. My skin is much
better and I am able to manage my weight better.
4) Are there any foods that you have found that are vegan that you wouldn't expect to be?
Oreos! Amazingly, they are pretty much made up of sugar and preservatives, unbelievably unhealthy.
Most ginger biscuits are also accidentally vegan.
Oreos are not vegan . they have milk as cross contact (I got this from their website) www.oreo.com
Ginger biscuits are vegan
I have amended the wording to:
Most ginger biscuits are actually vegan, as they are made with oats.
5) What did you find hardest to give up?
I haven’t changed anything in this
CHEESE! Milk and Chocolate substitutes are amazing but as of yet nobody has made a cheese substitute that doesn’t taste like
plastic although you can make your own out of cashew nuts which I am yet to try.
6) What coping mechanisms did you have?
A few changed to read better
I was secretly craving and eating cheese but eventually I realised it was just a taste I was craving. The more I didn't give in to it,
the easier it got to ignore it.
7) Do you feel healthier since becoming vegan?
Not changed anything here
I think so, but I was already eating quite healthily before so I can't be sure.
8) Is it more expensive than not being vegan?
Not changed
Not at all, you just have to be sensible with your money and not spend it all on ginger biscuits.
9) Do you have support from other people who are vegans?
Not changed apart from comma
I had a few Vegan friends who were really helpful, but my family were also extremely supportive, which I know is not
always the case.
10) What would your best piece of advice be for someone who wants to
become vegan?
Join vegan groups online, there are so many people out there willing to
answer your question. Also don't be too harsh on yourself, if you cave in
and eat some chocolate it’s not the end of the world. The best thing to do is
find vegan treats that make you happy, and have a a supply of them for
those moments when you want a slab of cheese or chocolate. Also bake a
lot; there are so many amazing vegan recipes out there, which are a lot
more inventive than mush.
I read a great bit of advice which was 'always be the vegan you would have
liked to have met before you became vegan' Its (It’s) so easy to try and
make people around you understand why you have decided to go vegan,
and (but) it's hard to talk about being vegan to someone who isn't , (without
implying that you are better then them)
It's all about staying calm and trying to take part in constructive
conversations.
My last tip would be to enjoy it, again get involved in groups online and
meet other vegans, enjoy living in the knowledge that you are staying true
to what you believe in.

Page layout

  • 3. Title Margins is the area around the edges of a page. You will want to avoid placing pieces of text. Margins can help you frame your work also. Columns are used to layout your page in a more readable and approachable way. Columns are good because it makes your text look less blocky if its just one big piece of writing. Columns look neater and they also add more room for images. FontThe cover date, the cover date is the date the magazine was published. Page numbers Cut out, a cut out is where a photo cut out and the background is removed. This adds a professional look and it helps make room for images or your page. Grids have been used to make sure all the text and pictures are in-line. Grids are guidelines that can come in lots of different layouts. This is a magazine layout. White space
  • 4. Spread: Spread is a layout that goes across more then one page. Here I have an example of a double page spread. Double page spreads are very effective and eye-catching in magazines because you can put lots of text on one side of the page and on the other side (like shown here) you can write little text and add more pictures instead. Here we have an examples of drop capitals. Using drop capitals is an effective way to start off a paragraph. It’s a way of capturing the viewers attention to get them to read on. Page number: page numbers are simple but very important as they guide readers through the newspaper. The headliner is the main title of the article Pull quote: pull quotes are placed into a page to grab the viewers attention. They can be in different fonts, colour, weight etc. this is to help make it stand out to the rest of the article. There is a border used here for the edges of this photograph. This is top separate the photo from the photo behind it. This helps the image stand out.
  • 5. Text wrap has been used here around this this frog on this article. Text wrapping is an effective way of laying out text because it allows room for images and it also adds a more interesting look then just a block of writing or columns. A strapline is text after the headline. It gives more information abut the article you are reading. This is important because it intrigues the reader into reading more.
  • 7. Here is a invitation I have made for a creative media show. I have made the title of the invitation the most interesting by making it the biggest of all the text on the invitation. I did this because I want the first thing you look at to be the name of the event. Reasons for me doing this are to attract the viewer straight to the point and then to intrigue them into finding out more. I also made the font of the text different to all the other text on the page to add that same effect. Its interesting, easy to read and professional. I made the subjects of the event underneath smaller and in a different font because all its job is to do is inform the view what's occurring at the event. Even smaller underneath that is the information on the location and the dates. This is because it’s the boring but vital parts of the invitation. It doesn't’t need to catch the viewers eyes first but its information they need to know. I made the text go from big to small to make to viewer read it in that order

  • 9. Here is a poster I made for a rock concert event. Firstly I made venue the biggest text on the page to instantly tell the viewer where the venue is at. I also made the colour of the text red, I did this because the other text is black and the background is yellow. The reason I made it red was to really bring out the title, as its on a bright yellow background the bright red really stands out. Red and yellow are bright colours that can be seen from quite a distance so I think this is an appropriate colour choice for a poster. Underneath the title is the main headliner of the night. I made the text smaller then the title but not as small as other liners because ‘Broken Arrow’ is the main event. I positioned it right underneath the title with only a small gap to spare. This is to make it look nice, neat, easy to read and follow. The headliner is also positioned closer to the title then the other liners because I feel as if the headliners is also apart of the title and its just as important. For the rest of the liners I have made the text smaller and I've made it look like the liners and underlining the headlines just like you would underline a title. I've also made it like this so you read everything I order, the title, the headliner, the liners and underneath is your information. I've placed the time of the event underneath the last liner because in my experience people seem to forget the time to an event more then the location so, I've placed it with the title and the liners. Lastly at the bottom in a different font is the headliners social media account and the date. I've place the social media account at the bottom on the left because its not as important as the event and the actual text its self isn't intriguing. Its only intriguing if you want to know more about the band but not everyone wants to know more, that’s why its smaller. In the right hand corner at the bottom is the date and the price. This is important information I think you need to know last because that’s the decider if you can make it or not. I don’t want the viewer to look straight at the date I think am not reading the rest because am busy that day. I want the viewer to read everything because they might read the bands and love the line up and instead of being busy that day they make time.
  • 10. Here is a quote I have taken from the rapper J cole. Firstly I made the quote nice a big so the viewer can easily read the quote. The font looks neat, elegant and soft. I picked this font because the quote its self is meaningful and it makes you think. I don’t want the font to be aggressive or in your face because the quote isn't coming across that why. J cole has a broad fan base and a lot of j coles fans are women. I aimed my work towards them as I don’t think there isn't many feminine posters on j cole. This made me carefully select my colours to a light purple background and white text. I picked these because I think they look soft and feminine together. I wrote j coles name at the bottom to reference the quote and I placed his well known logo at the top of the text. Fans will recognize this and it also adds a bit more then just a quote but at the same time its nice and simple.
  • 11. Grids
  • 12. Here is a website I've created its 8 column vertical grid. Firstly I've placed the title of the website right in the center of the page because it looks neat and I want it to be the first bit of text you see. Its also placed with in the grid to make sure its neat and tidy. The categories of clothing underneath is in a smaller and its in a different font. This is because I want the brand logo to be the brightest text on the page because the brand logo is what's on the clothes. The categories of clothing are spaced out and fit perfectly in the gird to make sure its professionally done and neat. In the back ground are clothes that are purchasable on the website. I put them there for the viewer when they enter the website they see something they like straight away so the go look and buy it. I've also turn the opacity down so the categories and title still stand out.
  • 13. Here for my double page spread for the grids I chose 5x5. I did this because it helped me place my main title, subtitle and text. I designed my magazine this way because it looks simple but I think simple is effective. On the right you have Stormzy with lots of nice bright colours, your attention is drawn straight to Stormzy as you turn the page. Then your eyes slide over to the left. Here you will see a nice big title and a subtitle. The title is positioned dead center and so is the subtitle. I chose the main title to be the biggest font so when you’re reading the article you go down in order, title, subtitle and text. As you can see there is a lot of white space but, I feel as if its suitable for my article as I wanted that simple look. There is two simple, not too long, easy to read columns of text that I think work really well. As a whole I think it looks professional and I’d happily give this a read.
  • 14. Here I have a 3x3 tabloid newspaper. As you can see this tabloid has its classic bold logo, with its big headline and adverts. When designed the tabloid I decided that no more headlines needed to be added to the front because the headline is so outrageous I feel as if It would need to take up most of the space. As you can see the adverts fit the 3x3 grids. This allowed me to design my tabloid nice and neat. The big headline text is fit nicely within the grids to also tidy things up. As a whole I agree this tabloid screams at your face and it will grab your audiences attention of the shelves.
  • 15. Task 4 – copy editing it started when I realised that cows don't just produce milk all the time for the fun of it, cows only produce milk for their baby cows, and baby cows have four stomachs to digest said milk, it's not really meant for humans. Who even first decide to drink cow boob extract anyway? Cheese is just mouldy cow boob extract,7and eggs are chicken period.... Nice. The first paragraph doesn’t read very well, so I have changed to the following. I started looking into the environmental impact of the dairy industry and that made me really start questioning my eating habits. I realized that cows, like humans should only produce milk for their offspring. Instead cows are bread specifically for human consumption. There are lots of articles that say it is bad for you
  • 16. I have changed the following so that it reads better, mush isn’t a food , it’s a term that they have chosen to use. What are your favorite meals/ snacks? I eat a lot of mush, mush is just a mix of lots of veg and spice all whizzed together. Doesn’t look to great but you can make it into burgers, into soups or toppings for baked potatoes and it tastes amazing. I eat a lot of vegetables and mix them up together into a mushy texture. I make burgers, soups and toppings for potatoes with it.
  • 17. 3) Have you felt any advantages/disadvantages from becoming vegan? (health, missing out on anything etc.) It's stressful because people are constantly telling you that you're not getting enough protein, and every time you’re ill it's apparently because you're vegan. But ultimately I feel a lot more energetic, its easier for me to manage my wait (weight), my skin is a lot better and it forces me to think properly about what I am putting into my body and what I'm getting from it. I have reduced the words and corrected a spelling mistake A lot of people constantly tell me that I’m not getting enough protein, and each time I am ill, they say it’s because I am vegan, but I feel a lot healthier and more energetic. My skin is much better and I am able to manage my weight better.
  • 18. 4) Are there any foods that you have found that are vegan that you wouldn't expect to be? Oreos! Amazingly, they are pretty much made up of sugar and preservatives, unbelievably unhealthy. Most ginger biscuits are also accidentally vegan. Oreos are not vegan . they have milk as cross contact (I got this from their website) www.oreo.com Ginger biscuits are vegan I have amended the wording to: Most ginger biscuits are actually vegan, as they are made with oats.
  • 19. 5) What did you find hardest to give up? I haven’t changed anything in this CHEESE! Milk and Chocolate substitutes are amazing but as of yet nobody has made a cheese substitute that doesn’t taste like plastic although you can make your own out of cashew nuts which I am yet to try. 6) What coping mechanisms did you have? A few changed to read better I was secretly craving and eating cheese but eventually I realised it was just a taste I was craving. The more I didn't give in to it, the easier it got to ignore it. 7) Do you feel healthier since becoming vegan? Not changed anything here I think so, but I was already eating quite healthily before so I can't be sure. 8) Is it more expensive than not being vegan? Not changed Not at all, you just have to be sensible with your money and not spend it all on ginger biscuits. 9) Do you have support from other people who are vegans? Not changed apart from comma I had a few Vegan friends who were really helpful, but my family were also extremely supportive, which I know is not always the case.
  • 20. 10) What would your best piece of advice be for someone who wants to become vegan? Join vegan groups online, there are so many people out there willing to answer your question. Also don't be too harsh on yourself, if you cave in and eat some chocolate it’s not the end of the world. The best thing to do is find vegan treats that make you happy, and have a a supply of them for those moments when you want a slab of cheese or chocolate. Also bake a lot; there are so many amazing vegan recipes out there, which are a lot more inventive than mush. I read a great bit of advice which was 'always be the vegan you would have liked to have met before you became vegan' Its (It’s) so easy to try and make people around you understand why you have decided to go vegan, and (but) it's hard to talk about being vegan to someone who isn't , (without implying that you are better then them) It's all about staying calm and trying to take part in constructive conversations. My last tip would be to enjoy it, again get involved in groups online and meet other vegans, enjoy living in the knowledge that you are staying true to what you believe in.
