Academic English Skills
 Seminars are a key component of university courses.
 Seminars usually follow lectures and allow students to
explore the topic in greater depth, share views and ask
questions.
 The aim of this assessment is for you to demonstrate your
ability to take an ‘active role’ in seminar discussions.
 Taking an active role means: interacting with other members
of your group, structuring your arguments, referring to
research to make and support points, agreeing and
disagreeing, moving the discussion on and using appropriate
academic language.
 The seminar is based on the topic of the listening exam. Once
you have taken your exam, you will be given a list of
discussion questions.
 When you come out the listening exam, it is a good idea to
note down ideas, arguments and research that were
discussed so you can refer to them in your seminar.
 You should also do additional research on the three topics
you are given, exploring relevant issues and making sure you
know topic-related vocabulary.
 You should form opinions about the seminar questions, and
have evidence to support your views.
 On the day of the assessment, your tutor will tell you
which group you are in, and the time you need to
attend.
 At the start of the assessment, your tutor will tell you
which topic / question your group needs to discuss.
 You will have 10 minutes to discuss the topic.
 You may bring in a sheet of brief notes to refer to –
these should be bullet point notes of relevant research.
 Use a range of discussion skills and expressions, e.g.
interrupting, asking and responding to questions, putting
forward a persuasive argument, agreeing / disagreeing, etc.
 Interact naturally with your group, relating your comments to
those of other speakers.
 Put forward a persuasive argument, supporting your opinions
with examples or evidence.
 Structure your arguments coherently.
 Prepare a speech or memorise your discussion. Tutors cannot
award marks for language that is prepared, and may result in
you needing to resit.
 Just take turns giving your opinion one by one without
relating your comments to those of other people. An
effective seminar is a discussion whether members talk TO
each other, not AT each other.
 Dominate the discussion. All group members should have the
chance to speak equally.
 Be too quiet, or only respond when asked directly – tutors can
only mark what they hear; if you don’t produce language, you
can’t get marks.
 Refer to the question and make sure your discussion
is staying on track.
 Follow up on other people’s points – don’t suddenly
change topic.
 Refer to research and examples to support your
points.
 Use topic-specific vocabulary, rather than general
words.
 Make sure others in your group understand– explain
your points or language, if necessary.
 Pay attention to your stress and intonation. Ideally,
others should be able to understand your attitude to
a point just from your stress and intonation.
 Towards the end, summarise your points.
 Your tutor will give you the marking criteria for the
seminar discussion.
 Watch the videos of students – what mark would you
give?
 In groups of four, nominate one student to take the
role of the examiner. The other three should discuss
the following question for 5 minutes:
 Advances in medical science, along with a declining
birth rate means that across the world, the
population is aging. Discuss solutions to address the
possible economic impact of an older population.

Editor's Notes

  1. If students need support, could give them a card with solutions for them to discuss which may be the most effective: raise retirement age / better pension provision / encourage more people to have families / encourage different generations to live together.
