Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
PHP Frameworks: I want to break free (IPC Berlin 2024)Ralf Eggert
In this presentation, we examine the challenges and limitations of relying too heavily on PHP frameworks in web development. We discuss the history of PHP and its frameworks to understand how this dependence has evolved. The focus will be on providing concrete tips and strategies to reduce reliance on these frameworks, based on real-world examples and practical considerations. The goal is to equip developers with the skills and knowledge to create more flexible and future-proof web applications. We'll explore the importance of maintaining autonomy in a rapidly changing tech landscape and how to make informed decisions in PHP development.
This talk is aimed at encouraging a more independent approach to using PHP frameworks, moving towards a more flexible and future-proof approach to PHP development.

In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

"Impact of front-end architecture on development cost", Viktor TurskyiFwdays
I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.
Let's dive deeper into the world of ODC! Ricardo Alves (OutSystems) will join us to tell all about the new Data Fabric. After that, Sezen de Bruijn (OutSystems) will get into the details on how to best design a sturdy architecture within ODC.

10. You’ll need European partners
Being an effective networker is much more useful than submitting a profile into a portal and
awaiting contacts.
• Use your existing professional networks – if you don’t know who the sector leaders are in
Europe then you should find out
• Use LinkedIn to connect to people from possible partners
• Join the relevant Partnership if any, ask your NCP for details
• Search CORDIS for previous, related projects and contact the participants. All projects must
disseminate their results and often hold workshops, etc.
• Join the relevant networks and associations – again ask your NCP for suggestions
• Be an active member – say ‘hi’ when you join the virtual room. Ask questions, support
others’ opinions, act as if you are already well known to all in the virtual room
• Volunteer to draft working papers, take notes, send in useful information – be helpful
• Speak up at workshops – demonstrate Thought Leadership
• Show that you would be a valuable partner for collaborative projects and that without
you they won’t win – you have the secret sauce that is necessary for their success

17. Copernicus Evolution – Research for
harmonised and Transitional-water
Observation: project and tips for applicants
Steve Groom
sbg@pml.ac.uk
This project received funding from the European
Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation
programme under grant agreement nº 870349
18. EC Copernicus Programme
• Copernicus is a major EU initiative to observe the Earth
• European contribution to the GEO system of systems
• Copernicus has, inter alia, two key elements:
Six thematic services that
provide data and forecasts The Sentinel operational
satellite series
19. Water colour
• Data provided by Copernicus includes “Water colour” governed by
water constituents like phytoplankton, sediments or coloured
dissolved organic matter
Copernicus Climate Change; Copernicus Marine: global data
based on Ocean Colour CCI – uses optical water type approach
20. Copernicus water colour production
• Development of CERTO idea
– Copernicus Marine, Climate Change and Land all produce water quality
– Use different methods for ocean, shelf waters and lakes
– Variables have different names and formats between services
– No harmonisation
– No service transitional
waters (estuaries, rivers,
near-coast and lagoons)
– Clear gap
21. H2020 LC-SPACE-04-EO-2019-2020 call
• Copernicus evolution – Research activities in support of cross-
cutting applications between Copernicus services
• Hence, our project “Copernicus Evolution – Research for harmonised
and Transitional-water Observation (CERTO)”
22. Key pointers
• You need a good idea but it needs to fit the aims of the call first
Ø In case of CERTO we bridged three Copernicus Services = key for the
call (and got 15/15 J)
• You need to address the requirements / objectives of the call
Ø Little point in ignoring what was asked for even if you personally are
not so keen!
• Clear statement of future potential of work
• Some people say you need good European country diversity
(CERTO: Romania, Italy Portugal, UK, Germany France, UK)
• Structure document so it doesn’t look boring!
• Finish the proposal well in advance (CERTO was 2 weeks ahead)
• The NCP provided a reviewer – great help!
23. • Thank You and Good Luck in Proposals
• sbg@pml.ac.uk
• https://www.certo-project.org/Home
• @CERTO_project
25. Next steps
I’m interested in exploring the opportunity, what should I do?
• Contact the relevant NCP to discuss your proposal idea and discuss its relevance to the
current Calls for Proposals
