The webinar provided background information on various call topics and on support available for both UK and European organisations in how to apply for funding and search for partners. KTN hosted this event on behalf of Innovate UK and was delivered by Viola Hay, KTN, Louise Mothersole, National Contact Point for Transport, and Dimitrios Vartis, DG Move, European Commission. The webinar gave an overview of H2020 TRANSPORT Call topics, and support available for UK organisations in how to apply for funding, as well as information on Brexit and the continuation of UK participation in H2020. This enabled attendees to gain an insight into the benefits of participating, guidelines for preparing a project outline and the support and collaboration tools available. the UK position with regards to

4. What is Horizon 2020?
• Horizon 2020 is a Framework
Programme, successor to
Framework Programme 7 (FP7)
• Awards grants for research and
innovation projects through open
competition
• €80Bn in total, €6.3Bn for transport
projects
• Began in 2014 and lasts for 7 years
• Has annual calls for proposals
• Final round of calls for proposals,
and new projects to start, in 2020

5. Why get involved in EU Research & Innovatio
• Funding (often 100% of eligible costs) always welcome
• Collaborate with others that could become your future customers
• Influence potential legislation and regulation
• Be at (and be seen to be at) the forefront of technology development
• EU projects frequently include international partners – create network
links for possible exports
• Get your organisation known – brand awareness

6. What is a National Contact Point?
• Role of the UK National Contact Point is to help UK organisations
successfully apply for funding:
– Promote the initiative and encourage participation
– Explain the rules and process
– Help to find collaboration partners
– Review draft proposals and give feedback
– Be ready, willing and able to answer questions and provide support

Standard European Commission briefing to evaluators:
“Until the UK leaves the EU, EU law continues to apply to and
within the UK, both when it comes to rights and obligations. This
includes the eligibility of UK legal entities to participate and
receive funding in Horizon 2020 actions. Experts should not
evaluate proposals with UK participants any differently than
before.”

10. Exiting with a Deal
• If the UK leaves the EU with any form of Withdrawal Agreement, i.e. a ‘deal’ scenario, organisations from
the UK will be treated as if they are still part of a Member State country
– Eligibility will be the same
– Funding by the European Commission will be the same
– Part of the ‘divorce bill’
• Joint report from the negotiators of the European Union and the United Kingdom Government on progress
during phase 1 of negotiations under Article 50 TEU on the United Kingdom's orderly withdrawal from the
European Union

11. Horizon 2020 “Open to the World”
• “Horizon 2020 is Open to the World. This means that participants from all
over the world, regardless of their place of establishment or residence, can
participate in most of the calls of Horizon 2020.”
• “In addition to this general openness, several topics strongly encourage or
require cooperation with non-EU partners in collaborative projects, target
a certain country/region or refer to global initiatives”

12. No-Deal UK Government Guarantee
• “The government has committed to guarantee funding for all
successful competitive UK bids to Horizon 2020 that are
submitted before we leave the EU, if there’s a no-deal Brexit.
• The guarantee also covers all successful competitive UK bids
to Horizon 2020 calls open to third-country participation
submitted between Brexit and the end of 2020. Both the
guarantee and extension commit funding to UK Horizon 2020
participants for the lifetime of projects”

– Give a full description of your relevant capabilities
– Be specific to the topic
– Explain what you want to do – what role do you want
– Mention similar work/projects you have done
– If Horizon 2020 is new to you, mention that you have experience of government funded research projects (e.g. Innovate UK or Research Councils)

– What unique offering do you have that will increase their probability of winning the competition?

• Top Tip for effective networking: Be Helpful
– When chatting to new contacts, make a mental note of ways that you could help them and follow up as soon as you can.
