• Building materials have an important role to
play in this modern age of technology.
• The basic concern of civil engineer is the
Design, Construction, Supervision and
maintenance of structures such as building,
bridges, canals, water tanks, roads, etc.
• The most important aspect in field practice
is to select and use different types of
materials.

investigation, or construction inspection or supervision.
• They are also involved in Laboratory Testing for condition
of Soil and Construction materials.
• They are also involved in Planning, Designing,
Construction & Maintenance of buildings.

• The goal of Environmental engineering is to
ensure the community development and the
sensible use of water, land and air resources to
make them sustainable.
• This goal is achieved by managing these
resources so that environmental pollution and
degradation is minimized.
• Environmental engineers study water, soil and air
pollution problems, and develop technical
solutions needed to solve, control these problems
in a manner that is compatible with legislative,
economic, social and political concerns.

• Irrigation is the controlled application of water to
agricultural lands.
• Its basic objective is to create an optimal soil
moisture system for maximizing crop production &
quality while at the same time minimizing the
environmental degradation in irrigation of
agricultural lands.
• Irrigation Engineering deals with the Design,
evaluation, & management of on-farm agricultural
water application methods, including surface,
sprinkler, as well as design, operation, and
maintenance of water conveyance and delivery
systems.

• Functions of Construction Management
1. Specifying project objectives & plans including
description of scope, budgeting, scheduling, setting
performance requirements & selecting project
participants.
2. Maximizing resource efficiency through procurement of
labor, materials and equipment.
3. Implementing various operations through proper
coordination and control of planning, design, estimating,
contracting & construction in the entire process.
4. Developing effective communications & mechanisms for
resolving conflict.
• A civil Engineer as a construction manager plans, coordinates,
budgets, & supervises construction projects from early
development to completion.
Criteria for selection of Construction MaterialCriteria for selection of Construction Material
• The use of durable, attractive, & environmentally
responsible building materials is a key element of any
high-performance building.
• The use of Natural & Healthy materials adds to the well-
being of the occupants.
• Many construction materials have significant
environmental impacts from pollutant releases, habitat
destruction, and depletion of natural resources.
• In addition, some construction materials can harm human
health by exposing workers and building occupants to
toxic and hazardous substances.
• Multiple factors are often considered by the Civil Engineer
when evaluating the various categories of building
materials.

• Materials must be selected for their ability to
support the loads imposed by the building
over the whole life of the building.
• A Highly durable material may provide the
most sustainable solution if it reduces
maintenance.
• Due to its versatility, aesthetic appeal, cost-
effectiveness and availability, concrete is
changing the face of the world.
• Engineers are making Concrete their material
of choice.

• Serviceability refers to the conditions under which a
building is still considered useful.
• By using serviceable materials we are able to provide
cost effective solutions in industries.
• The solid materials can cause structural failures.
Defects arise mainly causes in raw materials and
manufacturing processes.
• When materials are selected for practical purposes,
preference is given to the Materials that does not have
tendency to contain defects and those that can tolerate
them without failing prematurely.
• Materials should be properly tested before use.

Specifying project objectives & plans including description of scope, budgeting, scheduling, setting performance requirements & selecting project participants. 2. Implementing various operations through proper coordination and control of planning, design, estimating, contracting & construction in the entire process. 4. Developing effective communications & mechanisms for resolving conflict. • A civil Engineer as a construction manager plans, coordinates, budgets, & supervises construction projects from early development to completion. Criteria for selection of Construction MaterialCriteria for selection of Construction Material • The use of durable, attractive, & environmentally responsible building materials is a key element of any high-performance building. • The use of Natural & Healthy materials adds to the well- being of the occupants. • Many construction materials have significant environmental impacts from pollutant releases, habitat destruction, and depletion of natural resources. • In addition, some construction materials can harm human health by exposing workers and building occupants to toxic and hazardous substances. • Multiple factors are often considered by the Civil Engineer when evaluating the various categories of building materials. Defects arise mainly causes in raw materials and manufacturing processes. • When materials are selected for practical purposes, preference is given to the Materials that does not have tendency to contain defects and those that can tolerate them without failing prematurely. • Materials should be properly tested before use.
