NSPCC and ChildLine have utilised digital platforms to communicate with young people to increase their level of engagement with the work that we do.
We will showcase some of the successes and pitfalls of working with young people using technology.
Overcoming the barriers to getting the young person's voice heardResearch in Practice
ChildLine uses digital tools like N-Spire, a social network for young people, and their Facebook page to engage with young people and raise awareness of their services. They also maintain a website with articles and interactive features, as well as online services like message boards, Ask Sam, and 1-to-1 chats. However, moderating discussions and interactions on these platforms requires significant resources, and technical issues around compatibility and response times can also be challenges.

I developed this presentation for a students at a technical college. These students are future job seekers. They range from right out of high school to older people on their second career. The school works hard to help them in their job search, but no matter their age, they have to take charge of their personal brand and their own career development by building their network.
I volunteered to come in and give them a quick overview of how I build a large network. And how they could use the same ideas to do it with just a few simple actions.
With shrinking budgets, 21st century destination marketing organisations can no longer afford 20th century marketing. Here I suggest how you can do it the social media (well, social web) way.

Building and sustaining awesome business relationships with networkingJohn-Daniel Trask
No matter what you're told, business is about people - the relationships you build and the people you meet will become the key to business success.
I delivered this presentation to Massey University students studying business. I spoke about examples where investing in my network was key in future business transactions.
While some of the presentation requires me to tell a story (for example, how Microsoft provided my company with a $250,000 product on our first day in business thanks to the investment of my business partner in his relationship with Microsoft), I've included key quotes that I try to remember when building my own network.
I hope you enjoy the presentation and find it useful.

Despite ongoing financial distress, challenges with leadership and staff succession, and an aging volunteer base, many non-profit organizations remain reluctant to engage social media as a means for effectively pursuing their missions. For those who are using social media, in many cases this is limited to push communications, ignoring its real marketing potential as a means of developing relationships with members, funders, media, decision-makers, and others in key target communities. Frequently cited barriers to utilizing social media in the non-profit sector will be explored, with an eye to realistic best practices, and with special attention to the unique challenges of smaller organizations.

The internet plays a key role as a non-judgemental source of information on embarrassing topics. Young people value the internet's anonymity, breadth of perspectives, and ability to get information privately on sensitive issues they don't wish to discuss with others.
The document discusses a study that examined young people's information and advice needs through workshops. It found that young people primarily seek help from personal sources like parents and friends but may feel those sources are biased or unable to provide specialized advice. Formal services are also used but sometimes perceived as impersonal. The internet provides an anonymous source of often accurate information for embarrassing or sensitive topics not discussed elsewhere.
This document proposes a mobile app called "Hey Lets..." to address problems teens face spending too much time alone on their phones and lacking relationships. It describes:
- Problems teens face with isolation and lack of diversity in relationships
- A survey showing teens spend most of their free time on their phones rather than with others
- How the app would work, allowing teens to connect anonymously to talk, hang out, or help each other in a safe online space
- Plans to implement the app by advertising in schools and having teachers recommend it to help teens build social connections beyond what they use technology for currently.

This document summarizes the agenda and notes for a meeting of the Principal Social Workers network. It includes:
- A welcome from the co-chairs Hannah Scaife and Sarah Range and vice-chairs Jolaade Anjorin and Paula Swift.
- An overview of the meeting format and housekeeping notes.
- Brief introductions to the leadership team and their areas of focus.
- An outline of the meeting agenda, including regional updates, a message from Lyn Romeo, a Schwartz Round discussion, and an ADASS mentoring offer presentation.
Schwartz Rounds are a confidential forum for multidisciplinary healthcare staff to discuss the emotional and social challenges of caring for patients. Held once a month, they follow an evidence-based format where a patient story is presented by a panel followed by facilitated discussion. The goal is not to problem solve but to provide support and validation for staff experiences. Benefits include increased empathy, understanding between staff, and an organizational culture of openness and transparency in patient care. Over 600 healthcare organizations worldwide use the Schwartz Rounds model.
This document outlines an offer from ADASS Associates for a mentoring program targeting professional social workers (PSWs). The mentoring aims to encourage and support the development of future leaders in social care. PSWs would be matched with experienced mentors from ADASS Associates who would use a facilitative approach to help mentees increase self-awareness, identify career options, and develop plans. Previous mentees found benefits such as improved confidence, perspective on issues, and career progression. Interested individuals would discuss goals and choose from mentor profiles to find a good match. Practical arrangements like meeting frequency would be agreed between mentee and mentor.
This document summarizes key themes from reviews of Serious Case Reviews (SCRs) of child protection cases in England from 2017-2019. It identifies five themes for social work practice: 1) challenges of neglect and poverty, 2) issues with information exchange and communication between professionals, 3) importance of understanding children's behavior and experiences, 4) risks posed by deliberately deceitful abusers, and 5) examples of positive local initiatives for change. It also discusses themes for reviews and policy, including focusing on unique case aspects, recognizing complexity, and learning broader organizational and systemic lessons rather than just individual ones. The review found cases often involved neglect, domestic abuse, and parental mental health issues, and many children were already known to

This document describes a What Works Practice Learning Circle model that uses appreciative inquiry to facilitate learning from successful social work situations. The model brings together social work practice theories and pedagogical theories to form a learning cycle based on reflection, strengths, and peer learning. Practitioners discuss a successful case example using prompts to explore different perspectives and how context impacted the situation. The goal is to identify lessons learned and actions needed to replicate success. Participants provided positive feedback on using the circle and discussed taking lessons forward in their own practice.

Facebook
General disclosures
We frequently get posters sharing that they love
ChildLine and that it has helped them
enormously. Unfortunately we have to hide these
posts as they show vulnerability to the wider
world and put these young people in danger.
Welfare disclosures
We frequently get young people disclosing
welfare and safeguarding concerns on Facebook

23
Sometimes, it just reminds you
that people care. Even if the
advice they give is not so good,
or doesn't work for you,
sometimes you need a kind word
to help you through the day. And
by replying, even with just a
simple "hi, I understand," it
shows they care. And I'm
grateful.
Its an amazing way
of getting support

Yes, reading Ask Sam is very
useful. I don't want to actually
send a message to Sam. But if I
want to get an answer or an
outsider's insight to a problem, I
can read Ask Sam, without
writing a letter or going on a
message board. Thanks Childline
