1. Elementary Science Coordinator
12 month position

The Oakland Unified School District is seeking to hire an Elementary Science Coordinator to
lead a team in implementing the Next Generation Science Standards districtwide. As state and

Responsibilities:
●
● Coordinate the overall operations of the OUSD Elementary Science Program.
● Provide leadership in the development and dissemination of tools and resources for the
Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Includes curriculum, assessments, and
collaborative planning and analysis tools.
● Coordinate the development, planning, and implementation of NGSS professional
development including Summer Institutes, Professional Development Days, Principal
Professional Development, and Science Teacher Leader Meetings.
● Support science lesson study sessions across the district at school sites.
● Supervise the daily operations of the SMART Center, the District’s science resource
center, including FOSS kit rotations, delivery, and refurbishment, organism distribution,
database management, and material inventories and lending.
● Guide the NGSS Video Project.
● Coordinate district science events, including the District Science Fair, Dinner with a
Scientist events, Family Science Nights, and the Engineering Extravaganza.
● Collaborate with other content leaders in Teaching and Learning to provide aligned
teacher and principal support.
● Collaborate with Site Leadership and the Regional Network Offices to coordinate and
provide science instructional supports.
● Support grant funding activities, which include program evaluation components.
● Interface with grant funders and partner organizations to coordinate resources.
● Supervise a team of three Elementary Science Specialists and the SMART Center Stock
Clerk.
● Lead weekly team meetings and co-lead monthly department meetings.
● Attend and present at national and state conferences on science education.
● Manage multiple projects of high importance simultaneously.
Required Qualifications:
●
● A Bachelor’s Degree (science degree and Master’s degree in education preferred)
● Minimum five years experience in an elementary classroom, teaching science to
students including English Learners
● Minimum two years of administrative experience or equivalent
● Experience coordinating, supporting, and supervising a team
● Understanding of science content knowledge and pedagogy

2. ● Knowledge and understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards
● Strong communication skills, written and verbal, including public speaking
● Proficient in use of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the Google
platform (Drive, Docs, Sheets, Gmail)
● Ability to work in an indoor office environment and school sites
● Ability to drive a van and lift boxes up to 25 pounds
● Mobility to visit school sites and prepare physical space for presentations and meetings
● Availability to periodically attend evening events, and remote trainings and conferences
Preferred Qualifications:
●
● Significant experience providing professional development, coaching, or curriculum
development
● Recent experience as an education leader at a school site and/or district level
● Experience working with teachers and site leaders to build their capacity and
instructional leadership skills
● Experience supporting grant funding activities, which include program evaluation
components
● Experience interfacing with grant funders and partner organizations to coordinate
resources
● Experience with videography
Licenses and Other Requirements:
● California Administrative Services Credential
● California Clear Teaching Credential with CLAD authorization
● Valid California Driver License
● Employment eligibility that may include fingerprints, background check, Tuberculosis
screening, and/or other employment clearance
