2. Who are we?
● Basic and strategic ecological
research on individual organisms,
populations, ecological
communities and ecosystems
● > 300 researchers and students,
NIOO is one of the largest
institutes within the Royal
Netherlands Academy of Arts &
Sciences (KNAW)
● Ecology = understanding the
complexity of the interaction
between organisms and their
biotic and abiotic environment
● Some indicators of the potential
numbers:
➢ ESA > 10 000 members
➢ EEF > 20 000 members

3. Scientific process
In theory, not that complicated

In reality:
● Different types of data
● Different labs/researchers
do it in a different way
● Different scale of data
● Needs to be integrated!

5. Scholarly communication practices
● Literature: white papers , pre-prints, journal articles, conference articles, alternative literature
(blogs, slides, etc.), licensing (mixture of OA, and non-OA, use of ResearchGate)
● Datasets: extremely granular practices and extremely granular data landscape + low level of
education on the importance of proper data practices (even resistance)
● Software: 19% of papers share their code

6. Scholarly communication desiderata
Future:
- Developments and ADOPTION of standards
(data, software, general research e.g. pre-registration)
- Implement the existing open science tools into research
- Change in academic reward system
- We need a bottom up approach
- We need to bridge the gap between the communities!
