sounds like fun but it isn t what it seems. Ernest Hemingway writes a piece of
literature that when looked upon through a new historicist critical perspective
exposes the underlying truth and an uglier reality that is normally suppressed
presents itself. New historicist criticism in a nutshell is arguing that the literature is
directly influenced by the time period and place in which it occurs, but The Sun Also
Rises also reflects the attitudes and feelings of the author in the time period. In the

experiences through the lives of the characters in the book. Characters in The Sun
Also Rises are considered part of the lost generation , a term created by Gertrude
Stein to describe the generation that grew up in post war society. By no

characters in the book consists of heavy drinking and partying, a sort of escape
from the real world, and the same was a reality for Hemingway. Although France

While reading Petrarch The Ascent of Mont Ventoux I noticed that it had some
similarities to Dante s Purgatory that were more hidden. The fact that they are both
climbing a mountain trying to accomplish something is one thing but it also is very
deep with meaning. In Mont Ventoux Petrarch is climbing the mountain for the view
of it, while Dante is climbing it to reach Heaven, they both religious men and in their

their outward appearance; that the greatest and most deep connections are achieved
by looking at one s heart.

Throughout the years xenophobia has been a plague that has ravaged the lives of

brutal action again made the cover of the news as it started in KwaZulu Natal and

Durban. In the following essay I will be doing a literature review of the meaning of
and social consequences of xenophobia. I will also look at the social impact of

Xenophobia has numerous different effects on the different people suffering
through it. These effects range from social to economic. Socially xenophobia has
resulted in despicable acts of violence by black South Africans on other foreign
nationals, with South Africans stating that these foreigners are taking their jobs.
These foreign nationals some of which are shop owners are being ruined by looters
who break in and steal simply because the shop owners are not South African. This
brings in the theme of race relations. Are we as South Africans truly a rainbow
nation if we can t even get along with our fellow African brethren? Because of this,
the crime level in South Africa has also risen during the times of these xenophobic
outbreaks, such as in 2008 for example when 60+ people died as a result of
