Starter
• Mock reflection sheets / complete Module One
Feedback form – link to blog on fb page.
• Build the following molecules using molymods :• EASY : Methane, Propane, Butane
• MEDIUM : Butene, Cyclopropane.
• HARD : 2-chloropentane, ethanoic acid.
Objectives
• MUST: Name alkanes / alkenes ( up to C6 )
• SHOULD : Understand the differences
between empirical, molecular, structural,
displayed and skeletal formulae.
• COULD : Use geometry and overall polarity to
compare boiling points of unusual alkanes.
Task One
• Or Page 1 & 2 Organic Chemistry workbooks.
Task Two
• Empirical; simplest ratio of elements.
• Molecular; includes all atoms but does not
show arrangement.
• Structural; minimum possible representation
of structure.
• Displayed; 2D projection.
• Skeletal formulae; 3D structural formula.
Task Three
• As a class you are provided with 4 alkanes.
• Each team takes one alkane and, using a water
bath, establish its boiling point.
Alkane

Boiling Point
Task Four
• Place in order, with reasons, the highest
boiling to the lowest boiling.
• Words to include : Structure, shape,
hybridisation, intermolecular forces, boiling.
• Propane, Ethane, Cyclohexane, 1chlorobutane.
