CLASSIFICATION OF
COMMUNICATION
PREPARED BY: MS.CATHLENE MAE R. SANGLAY
Communicating with other person means that two people
behave toward one another in ways that meet the requirement
of communication. This behavior is dictated by either on the
following classifications:
1. INFORMAL
2. FORMAL
INFORMAL COMMUNICATION
 The term informal describes non-prepared speech.
 Most of us spend a large percentage of each day in informal communication
such as: talking to friends, parents, fellow classmates, neighbors, other family
members etc.
 This classification of communication may have been asked at a meeting to
respond extemporaneously;
 Or they may have been asked ahead of time but a little or no preparation.
FORMAL COMMUNICATION
 The term describes well-planned, often written-out speech.
 It involves a great deal of preparation where professional and learned people are
often asked to share their views and knowledge regarding their field.
 They may spend hours outlining information and developing a presentation;
they may write out information and, in some instances, present it as a read paper.
COMMON COMMUNICATION SITUATIONS
 THERE ARE FIVE COMMUNCIATION SITUATION YOU MIGHT SEE
YOURSELF IN: A CONVERSATION, A DIALOGUE, AN INTERVIEW, A
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION AND PUBLIC SPEAKING.
CONVERSATION
 A conversation is a face-to-face interaction between or
among individuals. It is informal in nature, with no agenda
or set or purpose.
DIALOGUE
 A dialogue is in some ways similar to conversation,
although the former is much more intimate and
purposive than the latter.
INTERVIEW
 An interview is a formal, purposive consultation. In this
communication situation, the interviewer’s objective is
to obtain specific pieces of information for the
interviewee.
SMALL GROUP DISCUSSION
 A small group discussion is a gathering of three or
more people who to aim to explore a subject
matter/issue or arrive at a decision.
PUBLIC SPEAKING
 In this communication situation, a speaker speaks in
front of an audience. The speaker’s aim is to convey
information, persuade, or entertain among others.
FROM STAGE FRIGHT TO CA
 Public speaking is on of the hardest—if not the hardest—and most challenging
communication situations a person could engage in, especially if he or she is
neither articulate nor confident of his/her knowledge and experience on the
subject matter.
 The fear of speaking is commonly referred to as stage fright because speakers
generally speak on stage during public speaking situations.
 This anxiety or fear of public speaking (called glossophobia) affects all kinds of
people regardless of their education, race, orientation, and profession.
 Communication apprehension or CA which is an individual’s level of fear of
anxiety associated with either real or anticipated communication with another
person or persons.
ACTIVITY / SKIT VIDEO
Make a skit about one communication situation with one
communication breakdown.
 For example: You are having a conversation with your friend from
the province and you lost the signal while you are in the climax of
your story.
ACTIVITY (MODULAR)
 Write 1 example scenarios for each communication situation: Conversation,
Dialogue, Small Group Discussion, Interview, Public Speaking—with one
communication breakdown for each situation.
For example:
A. CONVERSATION:
Hey, Lilo! I heard you are supporting our school president’s decision. You should not
follow them.
Lilo: I think you must respect my opinions, Lilo about my beliefs to anything.
Explain: Lilo and Nica are having conversation and experienced communication
breakdown because Nica is showing offensive communication and lack of
perception.
