I felt as though nothing was going to help me out, so I had to have a perfect short game that day. I
took a venture over to the practice putting green. I noticed that a plethora of golf bags had gathered
on the cement next to the green. My greenside play was where it needed to be but not perfect. I was
as ready for the day as I would ever be.
I started out to my designated tee box. It happened to be one of the farthest away points on the
course. A cart came by that was going to the same place that I was going, so I got a ride. As I stood
on the tee box of hole six, I realized that this hole was one that had plagued me all year long. I had
always been fine right up until my last shot to the green. A creek that ran right in the front of the
green had taken almost every one of my golf balls. I had never completed the shot in a pressure

First, I faced an upcoming tee shot on a long, dogleg right par 5. I unzipped my baby blue

Helens blind mother, Mrs. Stephens, in the movie Peeping Tom, plays a crucial role in enticing
Michael Powell's major themes of voyeurism and fear, and is the only character who is able to bring
a deeper understanding of Mark as a person and the humanity he hides deep within his childhood.
Film scholar Linda Williams has observed that silent films in the early 1900's often portrayed the
heroin to be naïve and figuratively or even physically blind. This rests on the concept of voyeurism
and objectification of women as well as the fact that women exist solely for the purpose to be looked
at and are not in the position to "see" for pleasure themselves. The true satisfaction attained during
voyeuristic activities is from the victim being unaware of being watched; making a "blind" woman
an ideal victim for a voyeur because of their inability to detect being watched. However, Mark does
not kill Mrs. Stephens because even though he prepares to kill her at one point, he realizes that she
is unable to watch her own death due to her blindness, thus not contributing to his film and
experiment. This shows that Mark is not an ordinary Peeping Tom, and that his voyeurism stems
primarily from his childhood and the filmed episodes of his life that his father directed. His
perverted acts of voyeurism and violence are for purposes much larger than just his own pleasure.

In the story "The Seventh Man" a the so called "Seventh Man" is someone who feels responsible for
his friends death, in a tsunami. "The Seventh Man" should not have to feel responsible for his
friends death. It isn't entirely his fault, but the cause of mother nature and natural occurrences. He
feels responsible however because he thinks that their may have been enough time for "The Seventh

"The Elephant Vanishes" Analysis
"The Elephant Vanishes" is an old Japanese short story that was published in 1993. It was written by
an intelligent Japanese author named Murakami Haruki. He is a well–respected writer, who wrote
this story by using a clear and calm tone. He uses this technique to develop his theme of unbalance
that mixes with reality with a fictional plot. To develop the theme, Haruki creates a strong narrator,
who tries to maintain his sanity from feeling unbalance. However, when the narrator could not, he
continues to investigate the missing elephant. Later in the story, the narrator noticed how the
elephant's absences changed his behavior, and lost control of himself. Murakami established a
strong, effective narrator, symbolism of unbalance, and imagery to portray his theme of unbalance
for "The Elephant Vanishes."
Murakami wrote his story that focus on a theme about unbalance. However, what was interesting
was that he writes it in first person. The reason why is because he wants his story to feel personal
and believable. In this case, he decided to create an unnamed narrator that only refers to itself as "I".
For instance, the narrator always discusses its actions such as "I went to the kitchen" or "I have

Pastor Bonhoeffer once said, "Judging others makes us blind, whereas love is illuminating. By
judging other's, we blind ourselves to our own evil and to the grace which others are just as entitled
to as we are." The way we treat people reflects on ourselves. The way the world judges and
condemns each other is very true and an everyday reality for most. The same could be said about
people who are limited by one or more of their six senses and are judged by the majority of the
population who are not limited and make preconceived notions about these limitations which can
bind them. Raymond Carver's "Cathedral" explores many literary devices that reveal the pre
conceived perception towards people with physical limitations without understanding the individual
first, which is still a problem today.

As we gain knowledge we gain understanding, giving us a different view of the world. In the story,
"Cathedral" by Raymond Carver, the author takes us through a day in the life of a husband who is
forced by his wife to meet and entertain her longtime friend Robert– who happens to be blind. The
husband is not exactly excited by this visit. The author illustrates the characters' development
beginning as apprehensive and jealous, transitioning to more of an uncomfortable feeling, and
finally ending with acceptance as the husband is put into a situation where he gains a new
understanding of the blind man. He ends the story with his eyes closed and a mind open to a new
view of the world.
As the story begins, the author seems to portray the main character as apprehensive and jealous. As
he narrates the story, the husband opens with a blunt statement, "his being blind bothered me." (34)
It immediately gives the reader the impression that he was very upset about the situation he was put
in. The husband seems more concerned with the fact that the man is blind and states later that his
"idea of blindness came from movies." (34) Giving once again an example of how uncomfortable

I remember the day so vividly, like it was yesterday. My family and I lived in a small, two story
house, in the middle of town. I woke up that morning, for my very first day of school. I got out of
bed and walked past my little brothers room, then past my parents and to the bathroom. I showered,
brushed my and then my teeth. I walked back to my room and got ready for my first day of school. I
had just turned three and my mom wanted to put me in preschool right away. I walked down the

Imagination is used to back away from reality and enter a new world. Most children use their
imagination for this reason, they turn into animals to lose control of themselves and become
someone else. The girl in the poem,"The Centaur," by May Swenson, the imaginary horse was used
to both replace her brother and remember him. She uses her imagination to reminisce and cope with
her loss. The gendered pronouns were used to refer to her brother along with metaphor and
zoomorphism that helped contribute to the overall theme and idea of the poem.
In the flashback when the girl was ten, she referred to her brother's possessions constantly. Although
her brother has seemed to be passed away, in her imagination he is actually there. "I'd go on my two
bare feet. But when, with my brother's jack–knife, I had cut me a long limber horse." In the girl's
imagination, she uses her brother's knife to cut her a long limber horse; however, with the use of
vehicle, it shows that in reality the girl is cutting a branch off the willow tree. Her brother is one of
the memories from her past, and by imagining, she remembers him. "Except a few leaves for the
tail, and cinched my brother's belt around his head for a rein" the male horse replaces the brother
and by constantly using her brother's possessions, she is able to cope with her the loss of her brother
and remember him again.
In the "Centaur" by May Swenson, the author uses zoomorphism to give animal qualities to human
things, and throughout the poem tenor and vehicle were used. Tenor is used when something is
actually present and vehicle is used when something is not present. In the poem, the girl blurs her
identity with the horse's, "that talcumed over his hoofs, hiding my toes, and turning his feet to swift
half moons." The girl believes that she is transforming into a horse or in reality, becoming her
brother. With the use of zoomorphism, the author is able to show that the horse reminds her of her
brother, causing her to follow in her brother's footsteps because she misses him. "My head and neck
were mine, yet they were shaped like a horse." The girl believes she is transforming into a horse,
and with her imagination she is able to manage with this idea because it is a

She paced the border of her property, three times she has gone around, I had been counting. I am
curious to know how many more revolutions she will make in the next hour. She has yet to notice

The Elephant Vanishes, By Haruki Murakami
Sleep is a short story set in Japan from Haruki Murakami anthology in his "The Elephant Vanishes"
collection. Author has written many short stories about a disenchanted character walking through
life without much of a reason to be there. I hardly went to sleep after reading that story because this
story contains so many possible interpretations based on ones perceptions and beliefs. In this story,
the woman fails to find a life for herself instead the leeching society is sucking her life and making
her dead inside. During the sleepless nights, she finds out an opportunity for her to break away from
her daily routine and creates a life of her own: a life without sleep, a life with unimaginable
freedom.
The story dictates the life of a 30–year–old married woman who stayed awake for 17 days. The
story began with describing her daily routine – waking up to make breakfast, sending her children to
school, going grocery, coming back home to prepare lunch and then dinner, and finally going to
sleep. This cycle keeps repeating over and over day after day. It was until one day that she finds real
exhilaration in living in a world without rest, a world where she can so whatever she wants out of
her life. In that world, she doesn't need to succumb to the everydayness.
Haruki Murakami uses certain diction in the story to portray for a reader a mechanical and robotic
way in which his main character has to live. "Once you learn to run it, it's just a matter of repetition.
You push this button and pull this lever. You adjust a gauge, put on the lid, set the timer. The same
thing over and over." Words like "button", "lever", "gauges", "timer" only uses to describe a robot or
a machine. However, the woman in this story has to live a life as a robot's life. As a robot doesn't
have feelings and emotions, she is also in the same situation. She only lives to do just as she is told
and never question just as a robot would do "taking orders without any questions." It's as though the
everyday life that was peaceful and routine–based was tiring her out, suffocating her. There was no
meaning in life, no surprises tomorrow, and definitely "today" was nothing "special". Every day was
like any other day, she wrote diaries but everyday

Lack of Vision in Cathedral
The narrator in Raymond Carver's "Cathedral" is not a particularly sensitive man. I might describe
him as self–centered, superficial, and egotistical. And while his actions certainly speak to these
points, it is his misunderstanding of the people and the relationships presented to him in this story
which show most clearly his tragic flaw: while Robert is physically blind, it is the narrator who
cannot clearly see the world around him.
In the eyes of the narrator, Robert's blindness is his defining characteristic. The opening line of
"Cathedral" reads, "This blind man, an old friend of my wife's, he was on his way to spend the

The narrator's naivete leaves him amazed by Robert, who does things which the narrator would view
as atypical of the blind. This reinforces the idea that the narrator is blind to the reality of the world.
The narrator's blindness is certainly not limited to Robert–he no better understands the relationship
between his wife and the blind man:
They'd become good friends, my wife and the blind man. . . . On her last day in the office, the blind
man asked if he could touch her face . . . .She told me he touched his fingers to every part of her
face . . . .She never forgot it. She even tried to write a poem about it . . . .She wrote a poem or two
every year, usually after something really important had happened to her. When we first started
going out together, she showed me the poem . . . I can remember I didn't think much of the poem . . .
Maybe I just don't understand poetry (Carver 1053).
While the narrator realizes that his wife's relationship with Robert is important to her, he cannot
understand why. Under other circumstances, the narrator's wife's descriptions of experiences that
summer and Robert's friendship and advice through her marriages might have left him enlightened
as to the depth of their relationship. But here, despite all evidence to the contrary, the narrator
(ultimately because of his prejudice) has ruled out Robert as a thoughtful, consequential person. He
cannot comprehend that a blind man is capable of touching

ailments. It also has other properties that can help with other ailments. The US Food and Drug
Administration website says that aspirin can be beneficial to populations with cardiovascular
disease. When populations use aspirin on the daily, it could lower the chances of a heart attack and
other blood flow problems (U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 2017). In chemistry, aspirin is
synthesized to help students understand various topics in the subject. In the lab completed, the topics
that were studied were spectrophotometry and Beer's law.

My Passion For Science
My passion for science and plants began early in my childhood and has grown substantially to that
which energizes me to chase after higher goals. I used to obsessively search for information on wild
plants that were edible and had medicinal properties. Now, I find that I am continually amazed by
research on the photosynthetic pathway along with biochemistry within plants in general. I was, and
still am, enthralled by the idea that so much knowledge and novelty is within the organisms that I
had appreciated since I was young. I believe that this passion was driven further by being able to
compare, for myself, a life spent in remedial labor and one with scientific exploration. Needing to
work in my family's business for years out of necessity placed me in a position where I saw how
each action could either draw me from or towards a better lifestyle. These experiences have
personally shown me the value in a program like the Leadership Alliance, whose purpose offers a
means to be a part of a diverse cohort striving toward leadership in the world. Having the
opportunity to be included in a community with such a goal and momentum would be phenomenal.
It would allow me to continue pursuing graduate and post–graduate level education while also
refining me into a monumental force in the field of scientific research. I desire to pursue my passion
of photosynthesis, plants, and biochemistry to serve the world with a team of researchers.
