Oncotyrol is an international partnership located in Innsbruck, Austria that aims to accelerate the development of personalized cancer therapies. It brings together academic researchers from local universities and international partners like Harvard Medical School to collaborate with industry partners like Roche and Novartis. The goal is to apply scientific expertise in oncology to generate patents, licenses and publications to help translate research into commercial treatments. The close collaboration is intended to benefit patients by saving time, increasing efficiency and innovation potential for the health system. The partnership is funded for four years with a 24 million euro budget from national and regional sources.

Efficient development of effective treatment and prevention
ONCOTYROL is an international partnership between academia and industry set up to
accelerate the development and evaluation of individualized cancer therapies, along with
diagnostic, prognostic and preventative tools.
The network is based on the excellent basic scientific and clinical expertise in oncology “Made
in Tyrol”. Oncotyrol has set itself the goal of applying this know-how and generating patents,
licences and publications together with internationally renowned partners. In this way,
Oncotyrol will help to close the gap between research and commercial development. The
consortium places strong emphasis on health politics and the economic assessment of new
therapies or diagnostic tests. Unique to this network is the consistent feedback of information
flow between the clinic and research partners: From Bench to Bedside and back. The close
collaboration of the clinic together with regional and international research and industrial
partners brings added value to all partners. This added value is in the form of saving time,
increasing cost efficiency and innovation potential. This will ultimately benefit the health
system and above all THE PATIENT.
The main scientific contribution is from the three Tyrolean universities - the Innsbruck Medical
University and the Leopold-Franzens University Innsbruck, both of which are in Innsbruck as
well as the private University for health and life sciences in Hall. They work together with
international universities such as the Harvard Medical School and the LMU in Munich. In total,
Oncotyrol is comprised of 21 academic workgroups. On the industrial side, there are 18 SME’s
involved, as well as 10 internationally affiliated companies which include Roche, Novartis,
Amgen, Fresenius, Schering-Plough, und Janssen-Cilag.
ONCOTYROL was established as part of the structural programme COMET which is an initiative
from the Austrian Federal Government Ministries and is approximately 50% funded from
national and regional resources. The budget for the first four years amounts to 24 Million Euro.
Oncotyrol, as a large collaborative project, is managed by the Innsbruck company CEMIT
GmbH - Center of Excellence in Medicine and IT.
