Where can I find the samples and data I need for my collaborative research project?
Geneticist
•8 laboratories and a coordination center, 25 technicians, 10M€ investment (2004-14)
•Covers the whole Basque Health System
•Prospective collection of human samples with informed consent linked to full medical information for large-scale “-omic” medicine
•Retrospective cohorts: 500.000 people of the Neonatal Sreening Program for metabolic disorders (First case in Spain)

Infraestructure
Objetives
•Enable personalised medicine
•Identify gene-environmental/lifestyle interactions
•Understand the molecular basis of disease
•Identify new targets for therapy
•Enhance development in drug discovery

Results
•310 clients :
• public reseach center 37%, University 15%, Biotech and pharmaceutical companies 16%, Hospitals 33%
•80 research projects and 5.000 samples/year

R&D in biobanking
How to improve our services: R&D in biobanking
Increase accessibility to samples and clinical
information from EHR
R&D: increase access to samples

Issues to be solved
Data dispersion
Different languages
Different data set format
•TEXT DATA SET
Less usage of data
Less accessibility
Many queries to find a specific sample or enough number of samples
IDEA: search samples across biobanks based on images queries

Big Data in biobanking
Big data: sets so large and complex that exceeds processing capacity of conventional database systems. Data is too big, moves too fast and doesn’t fit an architecture. Cloud computing: large groups of remote servers are networked to allow sharing of data-processing tasks
Basque Biobank and Big Data
•We have developed a private cloud to store LIMS and medical images
•Our goal is to make clinical information systems accessible for research and data mining
•Develop data entry and search interphase for research programs/investigators
•H2020: NEW PROPOSAL Recruitment of partners with competency in medical database mining, natural language processing, search engines and algorithms, controlled vocabularies, etc.

Case study
•Based on sample collection of Basque Biobank a aging-associated metabolomic signature has been developed
•Basque Health System has a stratified population, a centralized EHR and PM tools such as biobank

Looking for partners or other initiatives
•H2020: PHC24: Piloting personalised medicine in health and care systems
Pilots of new models of care, based on the concept of personalised medicine to be conducted in existing health care environments and should take into account Europe's (national and regional) diversity in health system organisation
