Traditionally, advanced bibliometrics have been the ‘gold standard’ in research evaluations in many fields. Due to changes in communication patterns in various fields, we now see alternative ways of assessing research appearing on the landscape. One of the major developments in scientific communication patterns is the advent of the Openness movement, through which various activities in academic life become more democratic, transparent, and hopefully fairer. This stretches out to publishing and the costs involved, how data are shared, and how peer review is organized, to name some instances in which the issue of Openness is raised. Of a somewhat more recent nature is the way assessment of scholarly activity is organized, in particular with respect to the way the various audiences with whom scholars are communicating are considered. A new way of looking at research assessment is through the recent ‘alternative metrics’ or also referred to as Altmetrics.
As more classical bibliometrics are under pressure, due to international (DORA-Declaration) and national debates and initiatives (SiT) related to the organization of research assessment in various layers of the science system. This stirs a re-focus from science policy towards alternative ways to assess research performance. In this presentation we will show, by a recent example, how careful we have to be in making choices for metrics in order to support research assessment practices as well science policy decision making.

Then, we will focus on the solutions developed my Clarivate Analytics to support the Australian HEPs when preparing and analysing their data and prior to the submission to the Australian Research Council.

Researchers from the three universities of technology shared their experiences of data management in different stages of research. And the Research Data Services team informed the audience about research data management services offered by 3TU.Datacentrum.

This 25-minute video introduces the concepts of transparent and reproducible social research.
The focus of this video is social science research that employs statistical techniques to analyse observational data (e.g. social surveys). Many of the issues associated with undertaking transparent and reproducible data analysis pervade other forms of social science research (e.g. qualitative data analysis), despite the different nature of the data and the analytical techniques that are used.

Open and reproducible research practises are increasingly recognised as important to scientific integrity. However, there are numerous barriers including research culture - whether as a sector, institution or discipline - lack of training and professional incentives and funding of infrastructure.
On 26 May 2021 Dr Marlene Mengoni was one of two speakers at an event exploring barriers to open research.
Dr Marlene Mengoni is a member of the Institute of Medical & Biological Engineering (IMBE) at the University of Leeds and is interested in theoretical aspects of musculoskeletal tissues biomechanics with a fundamental computational engineering approach.
Speaking from an engineering perspective, Dr Mengoni discussed how the research culture at the University of Leeds can help to foster open research practices, throughout the research cycle, including embedding "open" in research and training.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
