Characteristics
• SMART is an acronym that outlines basic
characteristics of a good, workable objective.
• Specific: The objective should be specified and
detailed.
• Measurable: It must be measurable so it can
be objectively assessed. In other words, easy
to quantify.
• Attainable: Employees and others must be
able to reach the objective.
• Relevant: Realistic objectives are more likely to
be met.
• Time-bound: There should be a time frame
and deadline associated with the objective.
Types of objectives
- On the basis of Levels
Within the organization there are three levels of objectives:
• Strategic objectives : Broad statements of where the
organization wants to be in the future are called
strategic goals.
• Tactical objectives: The results that major divisions and
departments within the organization intend to achieve are
defined as tactical objectives.
• Operational objectives: The specific results expected
from departments, work groups, and individuals are the
operational objectives.
- On the basis of Time
• Long term: 0-1 years
• Mid term: 1-3 years
• Short term: Long more than 3 years
