It allows researchers to add publications automatically as Elements searches for matches, or manually. Open Access means peer-reviewed research that is free to read online and can be redistributed with some restrictions. There are two main routes to Open Access - gold, where articles are published in fully open access journals potentially with article processing charges, and green, where authors deposit their accepted manuscript in an institutional repository after an embargo period. Mapping the final frontier publishers experiences launching open access journals
The open access landscape has very few roadmaps to guide publishers. Numerous OA journals have launched in the past 6 months, each with different strategies, scopes, audiences, and business models. Join ACS Publications, Nature Publishing Group, and IEEE as they walk through the lessons learned from the process of launching OA journals at their respective organizations. The American Chemical Society's newest journal, ACS Central Science, is the ACS' first attempt at a purely open access journal that has no author fees or subscription fees. The challenges of launching a new publishing model with a new business model have been a vital learning experience as ACS enters this new frontier. VP of New Business Development, Dr. Kevin Davies, will walk through the journal launch process, the impact of shifting to an OA model, the business considerations, and successes/challenges to date in this interactive session. Dr. James Butcher, Associate Director for Open Publishing at Nature Publishing Group, oversees the development of Nature Communications and Scientific Reports and will share how his work with these two journals has challenged NPG to think in new ways about the future of publishing in an open access economy. IEEE's Karen Hawkins is Senior Director, Product Design and manages all new product introductions including IEEE's OA publishing. This panel will be moderated by John Mihalick of ACS Publications. Status of Open Access in Taiwan
Taiwan has approximately 180,000 researchers who published 131,000 papers between 2009 and 2013. However, Taiwan lacks a cohesive national strategy for open access and much of the activity is distributed and uncoordinated. The main government funding agency also has no open access policy. There are 31 open access journals in Taiwan that mostly use CC BY-NC-ND licenses. Two examples of open access developments include collective negotiations with Elsevier over access to ScienceDirect and an open access journal called "Zoological Studies" published by Academia Sinica.
Do teaching hospital clinicians use the library in their working lives?
Clinical staff and managers at an academic teaching hospital use library services and published literature for evidence-based practice, hospital work, teaching, learning, and research. Two surveys conducted in 2010 found that the most commonly used library services were online journals, print journals, and online databases. The published literature was most frequently used for evidence-based practice, treatment decisions, and keeping up with the latest research.
Open access pilot

We are now in the 21st year of the Open Access movement and the UK and European policies are really beginning to drive change and innovation. That change is not fast enough for some, and for others - particularly those covered by the policies, or seeking to implement policy - just a little too fast sometimes.

- 2. About Open Access Making research publications freely available online • Most journals (not just fully open access ones) have an open access option • Benefits include increased access and citations, and greater visibility • Funders, UCL and HEFCE (REF) require open access for research papers

Types of Open Access Gold Output is made openly available immediately on the publisher’s site, in exchange for a one-off fee Funds are available for all UCL authors Green Output is made freely available from an open access repository such as UCL Discovery (discovery.ucl.ac.uk) If both Gold and Green are available, the choice is an academic decision
- 4. Publisher membership schemes If we don’t have a membership scheme, we pay by invoice
- 5. REF open access policy Requirements • Final peer-reviewed manuscript of all articles and conference proceedings must be deposited in an open access repository within 3 months of acceptance • Papers accepted after 1 April 2016 Policy points • Compliant embargoes: 12 months (Panels A & B) • Non-compliant outputs cannot be submitted to the REF UCL implementation • Outputs of all types should be deposited • This applies immediately
