Civility And Savagery In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of Darkness
Jazbeth Aguilar
AP Literature
December 8, 2017
Joseph Conrad, in his novel Heart of Darkness, uses the contrasting places of Europe and Africa
in order to represent opposed forces or ideas that are central to the entirety of the work. This
journey back in time, to a prehistoric earth illustrates Marlow s physical journey as well as
relates to his emotional and spiritual experience. Marlow characterizes events, ideas, and
locations that he encounters in terms of light or darkness. Marlow continuously equates light
with knowledge and civility and darkness with mystery and savagery. When he begins his
narrative, Marlow evokes light and, therefore, civility, with reality, believing it to be a tangible
expression of man s natural state. Similarly, Marlow uses darkness to depict savagery as a vice
having escaped with nature. However, as he proceeds deeper into the heart of the African jungle
and begins to understand savagery as a primitive form of civilization and, therefore, a reflection on
his own reality, the metaphor shifts, until the narrator raises his head at the end of the novel to
discover that the Thames seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness. The alteration of
the light dark metaphor corresponds with Marlow s awareness that the only reality, truth, or light
about civilization is that it is, regardless of appearances, is instead darkness.
Conrad uses light as a symbol of civilization. Just as darkness is defined as the absence of light, the

Learning Assessment
This tool provides techniques for assessing student learning in a way that deepens their
understanding, enables their application of knowledge, and strengthens their ability to transfer their
knowledge for use in new settings.
Description
Learning is at the heart of assessing for transfer and application. This tool is defined by assessment
activities where students act because of their learning.
Two things much happen before assessing for transfer and application:
1. Learning outcomes must be stated in a way that captures the desired deeper understanding of
concepts and their relationships to one another.
2. Learning activities in the course have provided students an opportunity to use their knowledge in
context.
A student s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The general strategy for this type of assessment activity typically involves students writing,
developing, or creating, along with multiple opportunities for feedback and revision.
Assessment Strategies
There are many specific strategies that you can use to assess for application and transfer. No one
strategy will describe a student s ability. Multiple strategies will help best capture a student s
progress. Some of the strategies include:
Papers/Presentations. These approaches allow students to demonstrate their conceptually applied
knowledge either in a written or oral format.
Portfolio. Either electronic or in physical form, a portfolio is a collection of a students work, a
collective view of their various applications of knowledge.
Diverse problem sets and/or cases. These give students an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge in
various settings with changing emphasis on different variables.
Simulations. Similar to diverse problem sets and cases, simulations allow for students to apply
their knowledge in a controlled environment. This can be better for learning than real world
application as the real world complexities can be temporarily simplified, allowing the student to
focus on key principles of skills. They also allow students to participate in new situations that
require the use of previously learned knowledge.
Real world application. (In all its complexity.) Field work,

Contemporary Psychodynamic Authors
Contemporary psychodynamic authors define defenses as unconscious mental processes that
function to defend against extreme anxiety (e.g. Valliant, 1994). Moreover, defenses are observed
as being both protectors against unconscious feelings and relational and cognitive behaviours that
protect the self (Cooper, 1998). Currently there is no consensus as to the number of defenses that
exist however, in The Ego and the mechanisms of Defense Ana Freud (1936/1986) discusses ten.
However, subsequently there has expansion of recognised defences (Kramer 2013). Although,
authors vary on the number of defenses that are present, there is a largely an agreement on the role
of defenses. The function of these defense mechanisms is to modify internal psychological
conditions such as emotions and thoughts by changing the meaning or implication of perceived
threats (Kramer 2013). Defenses are utilised differently in borderline personality and comparable
disorders and therefore necessitate accurate identification for therapeutic appropriate intervention
(Cooper, 1998).
Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe and dominant psychiatric condition featuring
affective instability, marked impulsivity, and substantial deficits in the ability to work and sustain
meaningful relationships (Hadjipavlou and Ogrodniczuk 2010). In addition, BPD individuals suffer
with deep fear of abandonment, identity conflicts and paranoid ideations (Hadjipavlou and
Ogrodniczuk 2010). Further, BPD individuals

Two Current Issues in Management
For managers to effectively institutionalize their businesses, they must have absolute knowledge of
their business environments and the salient issues that may affect the operations of their
organizations both within and outside so as to be able to proffer absolute and sustainable solution
that will keep them in existence.
One of such issues is Gender Equality. A complete and unbiased definition of gender equality as
addressed by the European Commission s Women s Charter (2010) (COM (2010) 78 final) which
can be seen in the Gender Equality Index Report (2013, p.7, cited in Kovačević and Šehić,

Essay on Lupus

Lupus
Lupus is a potentially life threatening disease that effects about 1.5 million Americans. Lupus can
effect many different parts of the body. Lupus is a type of autoimmune system disorder in which
the body cannot distinguish the difference between foreign antibodies and its own organs. So
basically what happens is that the body ends up attacking its own organs thinking they are foreign
substances. (The Lupus Foundation of America)
There are three different types of Lupus. They are: Discoid, Systematic, and Drug Induced. Discoid
Lupus only effects a persons skin. The only symptom of Discoid Lupus is a rash. Systematic Lupus
is the most common form of Lupus. It effects ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some may include: Achy joints, Fever of over 100 degrees, arthritis, extreme fatigue, skin rashes,
anxiety, kidney involvement, pain in the chest area or trouble breathing, rash, light sensitivity, hair
loss, blood clotting problems, seizures, and mouth and nose ulcers. This is a giant list of symptoms,
but many people who have Lupus do not experience more then one or two of these symptoms. (The
Lupus Foundation of America, The Lupus Page)
There are many different ways to treat Lupus. The most common treatment does not cure Lupus,
but minimizes the symptoms and reduces inflammation. Support groups to help relieve anxiety and
regular exercise can help treat the disease as well. There are a bunch of drugs that can be prescribed
to help treat the specific symptoms. Most of these drugs are anti inflammatory drugs. Some of them
are as simple as over the counter painkillers like Tylenol, while others can be powerful steroids with
anti inflammatory agents in them. (The Lupus Foundation of America, The Lupus Page)
In conclusion Lupus is definitely a very serious disease that we must learn more about. My great
aunt had Lupus for over ten years and during that time suffered in ways no person should have to.
She would fall down constantly and break bones. Near the end of her life, she would break bones
doing stuff as simple as getting out of bed.

Comparing Life Of Pi And The Tyger By William Blake
Life of Pi by Yann Martel, and The Tyger by William Blake can be seen as comparable from
numerous viewpoints.
Though one is a novel and the other is a short poem, the two pieces of writing can be thoroughly
analyzed on their perspectives and themes to highlight important aspects in each.
The stories contain a similar animal theme and both question God, yet they differ in their views on
God.
A similar aspect in the two stories is the animal theme.
When Pi is trapped on a lifeboat, his only company is a Bengal Tiger. It was in this circumstance
that Pi understood the animal need for survival. Pi says of his transformation from a strict
vegetarian into someone who expected to kill to survive, that, I descended to a level of savagery
I never imagined possible. (218). Everyday, Pi felt like he was at a crucial point in his life, since
he didn t know whether he would live to see tomorrow, especially with Richard Parker on the
lifeboat. This is when Pi s animal instincts kicked in and mirrored that of the tiger s. The animal
inside of him, and his survival instincts ended up plainly evident in his battle for survival.
In the poem The Tyger, the animal theme is exhibited through the narrator s relentless questions
of the tiger. In the poem it says, What immortal hand or eye, Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?
(23 24). This happens to be the narrator s way of asking who would dare to create an animal so
vicious and dangerous. Throughout the poem, the speaker asks various questions about the ferocity
of the creature. Be that as it may, this is the nature of a tiger. They are wild animals that are
dangerous, and act on instinct.
In the two stories, the animal theme depicted conflicts with civilization. Pi was forced to
abandon his knowledge and behaviour from the civilized life he once led, in order to embrace
his animal instincts and survive. In The Tyger , we can see the contempt of the speaker while
considering the behaviours of the wild animal. By looking at this similar element from the two
stories, it is easier to perceive how the two cases may be seen. Pi could be looked upon like the
tiger, in that they were similar in their animal ways. Many individuals would not have the strength
to do what Pi

only question that arouse with it was that the slain guard apparently had one identical in type and

The City Of Long Beach Essay
The community that I will be describing is the city of Long Beach. In this city there are many
people of age and ethnicity. This city is very diverse in having many people of different cultures
and backgrounds. Downtown Long Beach is where people go to eat, have fun and hang out near
the Pike. At the Pike is where you ll find a lot of young people going to the movies or shopping.
In this city it is filled with young adults and they are the majority of the community. A lot of the
young adults have jobs and there are some that are going to school. Younger adults are more prone
to trying new things which sometimes can lead into a health issue. In this city I will be discussing
a main health problem that might be relatable to other cities. The health problem that will be
discussed is the use of tobaccoproducts in young adults. Some products are cigarettes, e cigarettes,
vapes, chewing tobacco, and hookah. These products are used daily by young adults in this
community.
The relatable health problem is tobacco use. Tobacco can be used in many ways, but most
commonly it is smoked or chewed. I chose this health topic because it is a concerned of mine on
how many young adults use tobacco. According to healthy people 2020, 10.9 percent of young
adults aged 18 to 25 years who had not previously used tobacco products in their lifetime first used
tobacco products in the past 12 months in 2008 This shows that young adults are trying and

Power Tends To Corrupt And Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely
Outline the parts of the introduction to your paper, the main points, the evidence for those
points, and the conclusion of your paper. Introduction: As the saying goes, Power tends to
corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely (Marton). A person may by guided by the
noblest of ideals and have a cause as pure as gold or as radiant as the sun, but the moment they
have absolute power there cause will fall apart and all will have been for not. In Animal Farm by
George Orwell, he exemplifies this ideal as we follow Napoleon and his rise to power, or rather
his fall from grace towards complete degradation. Over the progression of the novel Napoleon
tries to actualize the dream of the other farm animals as he works towards the dream of reaping
what one sows . In the process, he is put into a leadership position where he shows, the corrosive
effect that power has his morals as the story progresses displaying how power corrupts and
absolute power corrupts absolutely. Main Points: The story begins with Old Major, who is a
respected on the farm, and who had given a speech that stirred the animals emotions towards the
idea of rebellion. He used his power of respect and trust to persuade the others to pursue the
vision in his dream by stating, Nearly the whole of the production of our labor is stolen from us
by human beings. There, comrades is the answer to our problems. It is summed up in a single
word Man (Orwell 5).This dream of reaping what one sows made the animals on the

Human Activity And Its Impact On Creation
Introduction
There is indisputable evidence that the planet earth, the home of all life; wildlife, water, land, and
air can be damaged by human activities, consequently making people suffer. Once this happens, it
is egregious especially from the fact that creation serves as the revelation of God s presence,
majesty, and provision. Irrespective of the point that not every person physically hears God s
revelation from the scripture; every humanity has access to God s cosmic revelation; the heavens,
the waters, the natural order, the beauty of nature (Psalm 19, Romans 1). Our presumption is that
human activity is mixed in its impact on creation; sometimes productive and caring, but often
irresponsible, avoidable and sinful. The command from God to tend and keep the earth has never
passed away from the fall man; this means that man still bears responsibility of keeping and
tending the earth. Therefore, lack of concern and failure to take action carefully as followers of
Christ is a poor reflection to the rest of the world. In this particular case, we take responsibility
for the damage that we have done to God s cosmic revelation and pledge to take a resolute stance
in preserving and protecting the creation over which we have been assigned responsibility by God
Himself.

Introduction
In this era of modernization, obesity has become a common disorder affecting a large number of
individuals all around the world. According to research published in 2013, one in five American
deaths is now associated with obesity.[1] In fact, obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat
accumulation that presents a risk to health.[10] An obese person will mount up a large amount of
body fat that it might bring about negative effect on their health. Waist circumference is an easy
way to check how much body fat we have and its distribution around our body. Eventually, it
compares closely with our body mass index (BMI), and is often seen as a better way of checking
our risk of developing a chronic disease.[9] A study has been done to show the threshold values
for body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) for detecting cardiovascular disease
(CVD) risk.[3] Thus, it ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The Key To Enlightenment In Hermann Hesse s Siddhartha
Friends fight, parents and children argue, siblings bicker and tease, but it is all worth it in the end.
In Hermann Hesse s Siddhartha, the topic of relationships versus material items comes up multiple
times. As Siddhartha searches to find enlightenment and the meaning in life, he goes through many
different trials, but nothing seems to give him pure happiness until the end of the novel. Hesse made
it a point for the reader to realize that people were not put on this world to be alone, we were made
to have relationships with others. The author also made a clear statement that happiness can not
come from material items or even having no material items at all. Creating bonds, such as
Siddharthas friendship with Govinda and his relationship with Kamala is the key to enlightenment.
Hesse implied that good relationships with others is what allows people to find total
enlightenment, or pure happiness. As Govinda and Siddhartha prepare to part ways, Siddhartha
gives a powerful speech and says, You have heard my blessing, Govinda. I repeat it. May you
travel this path to the end. May you find salvation! . Although Siddhartha cares about Govinda
and their friendship, he knows that in order for Govinda to go far in life he must learn for
himself, by himself. He easily could ve made the selfish decision and just kept on carrying Govinda
through life. But he pushed Govinda to move past his comfort zone and to jump in with his own
two feet. Later on, when Siddhartha and Govinda

Consequences Of The Nanjing Massacre
The Nanjing Massacre to some extent was more atrocious than the bombing of Hiroshima. The
main reasons were: the ongoing physical violence, Japan s war aggression, and lastly, people
tend to forget to forget its history, in comparison to Hiroshima bombings. The Nanjing Massacre
was arguably more atrocious than the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in terms of ongoing
physical violence. The Japanese Imperial Army s invasion in China prolonged the Nanjing
Massacre. Moreover, arguably, it was more atrocious in their case because their own government
and army abandoned them. A survivor named Jiang Genfu had to watch his parents and siblings
get killed by Japanese soldiers, at the age of nine. The Nanjing Massacre was hardly the unifying
event that it has for the Chinese . No one could fathom the overall extent of the terror by looking at
confidential accounts and diaries from Chinese survivors. An estimate of 200,000 Chinese civilians
and war prisoners were massacred in Nanjing during the first six weeks of the Japanese invasion.
Numbers may not mean anything, however, the violence was ongoing. Historians also had to take
into account that not all numbers add up because published textbooks present varied information.
Beijing stated that 300,000 people were massacred. Both sides often questioned the figures. A
professor at Sophia University named Watanabe Shoichi, claimed that 200,000 or 300,000 could
not have been massacred in Nanjing, assuming the size of the Japanese

My Experience With Customer Service Representatives
Have you ever had an experience with customer service representatives? Some have stood out for
being unpleasant to me because of my inability to communicate with Native Americans fluently.
Sadly, I ve had so many of them that it will take a lot for any of them to stand out. Some parts of

The Crusades Essay
In 1095, at the Council of Clermont, Pope Urban II began a striking expedition to Jerusalem in
order to release the city from Muslim control. His moving campaign and the promise of an immense
reward was inspirational to the many willing participants. One must essentially understand that the
leaders of these crusadesconnected almost every accomplishment to the works of God, and felt a
huge moral obligation to take back what once belonged to Him. The extent of the crusades shows
the deep devotion that most of Western Europehad towards Christianity and the desire to rid the
world of unnecessary evils.

The general consensus of the Western European societies classified their enemies as anyone who
differed even slightly from the Catholic beliefs. Their society appears to be a very strict and
conformal atmosphere in which autonomy did not play much of a role. As such, in regards to the
sentencing of the Count of Toulouse the writings on the crusades contain much information that
points to the choice of conversion or condemnation. Eternal damnation was believed to be the
result of a person who did not show repentance or debarred heresy, and shows no devotion to the
cause of reconciliation.
Even though the principal language used throughout the crusades was Latin, the context of it was
used in a multitude of ways. The broad applicability of Latin was used because it was the official
language of the Roman church. The Church was the main source of education and therefore created
a web of writings, textbooks, and biblical translations which allowed much of Europe and Asia
Minor to understand the message of Western Christianity. The direct meaning of the word crusade
was taking the cross though this period was not named as such until later in the sixteenth century.
The soldiers of the Crusades apperceived that the idea of taking one s cross meant to follow Christ,
which allowed for such substantial influence

Automobile Pollution Essay
Automobiles Consuming Fossil Fuels and Pollution in America
Why do Americans buy so many products knowing they are causing pollution? That may be
because they enjoy shopping. Every product causes some sort of pollution. For instance,
automobiles cause a great amount of pollution. The sad part is that the mass production of
automobiles has been growing larger every year, ever since the Model T Fords came out.
Between 1908 and 1927, Ford produced about 15 million Model T cars, which is on average 790
thousand cars produced every year. Today, the company sells about 2.5 million automobiles
annually. In other words, Ford produces over 3 times as many automobiles today. Over production
and consumption of automobiles induces the consumption of fossil fuels. Consuming gasoline to
run cars was the idea of over a century ago. With the quantity of the production of cars today, it is
not efficient to use the same old method to run cars. Water and oxygen are most vital for humans. If
we pollute all of the water and air in the world, extinction will be our only option. Americans should
eliminate the excessive consumption of automobiles because it leads to overconsumption of fossil
fuels, which causes pollution. Three common types of pollution are air pollution, water pollution,
and noise pollution.
In the past century, cars and trucks have turned from objects of desire into a person s basic needs.
After factories, automobiles are the biggest air polluters of America. Air pollution is a

Generally Accepted Auditing Standards Generally Accepted Auditing Standards or GAAS is a set
of systematic guidelines used by auditors when conducting audits on companies finances, ensuring
the accuracy, consistency and verifiability of auditors actions and reports (Lexico Publishing
Group, 2008). The following paper will explain the elements of GAAS and how GAAS is applied
to audits. GAAS has three elements that must be used during every audit. They are general
standards, standards of field work, and standards of reporting. Each of the three standards has their

There are three main types of audits, financial, operational, and compliance. First a financial
statement audit involves obtaining and evaluating evidence about an entity s presentation of its
financial position, results of operations, and cash flows for the purpose of expressing an opinion
on whether they are presented fairly in conformity with established criteria (Boynton Johnson,
2006). Next an operational audit involves obtaining and evaluating evidence about the efficiency
and effectiveness of an entity s operating activities in relation to specified objectives (Boynton
Johnson, 2006). Last a compliance audit involves obtaining and evaluating evidence to determine
whether certain financial or operating activities of an entity conform to specified conditions, rules,
or regulations (Boynton Johnson, 2006). The standards of GAAS apply to all three types of
audits in more ways than one. First the general standards must all be adhered before any auditor
can perform an audit in any entity. The standards of field work also must be followed while in the

The Epic Of The Ramayana
The Ramayana The story Ramayan is the oldest version, is the basis of all the various versions of

Susan Glaspell s A Jury Of Her Peers
In 1917, Susan Glaspell rewrote her 1916 Play, Trifles, into a short story called A Jury of her
Peers. They both depict a group of townspeople investigating the murder of Mr. Wright. It is
suspected that Mrs. Minnie Wright, his wife, is the murderer. As the story goes on, the women in
the group figure out she committed the murder but decide to hide evidence to keep her from being
convicted. Susan Glaspellwrote a short story titled A Jury of her Peers mirroring a previous play
that she had written titled Trifles. There are slight changes and variations between these two that
make them surprisingly different. By comparing the characters point of view, the way the story is
introduced, and the plot we can point out key differences between... Show more content on

The titles of the two help set up the point of view that particular story is going to be told in. The
story named A Jury of Her Peers was named that because Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, her peers,
basically decided the fate of Minnie. They both decided not to turn in the evidence and, in doing
so, more than likely kept her out of prison. The term jury used in the title is appropriate because
the whole story is depicting a group of townspeople who are investigating the murder scene to
decide her fate. Typically, a group of people deciding someone s fate is called a jury. In the play
,
Trifles, Mr. Hale states that women are constantly worrying over trifles (Glaspell 561). Yet, these
are the same trifles that if the men paid attention to they would be able to get plenty of evidence
against Minnie. The introductions to the stories are also very different, in the story it starts way
before they get to Mrs. Wrights house. It actually starts at Mr. and Mrs. Hales house as the
sheriff s buggy stops to pick them up. This allows us to get a feel for the relationships between
each of the characters. It also allows us to understand why the women are there in the first place,
the sheriffs wife, Mrs. Peters, is there to get some of Mrs. Wrights things for her, and Mrs. Hale
is there simply to keep Mrs. Peters company. It states, and then the sheriff came running in to say
his wife wished Mrs. Hale would come too adding, with a grin, that he guessed she was getting
scarey and wanted another woman along (Glaspell 568). The story also gives a very descriptive
view of the Mrs. Wrights home, and namely her kitchen. This differs greatly from the play in the
fact that the only description of the setting that we get in the beginning of the play is a short scene
description before the character dialogue starts. There is no information to connect the characters in

The Role Of Baseball In The 1970 s
One of the most important years for baseball in the 70s was 1974. Here are some examples of
why the 1974 baseball season is so important. During the 1974 season, baseball made history and
many of ways. The most memorable person was Hank Aaron, Aaron broke Babe Ruth s total
home run record (714). The pitcher that everyone was scared of was Nolan Ryan and the king of
steal that year was Lou Brock. Hank Aaron went into the 1974 season one shy of the home run
record. The Braves started the season on the road, so they did not play Aaron, the Braves wanted
him to get the record at home. The Braves got in trouble with the league and they made the Braves
put him in the lineup. In Aaron s first at bat, his first swing, homerun (1970s Sports History)....

outdoor play area is also paramount to augment the indoor area. The physical and emotional
development is no less important as cognitive development. Children enjoy playing outside;
therefore, confining a child to a hospital bed for the duration of his or her recovery would stifle
the recovery progress and make a traumatic experience an emotional nightmare. A child that is
surrounded by medical equipment in his or her hospital room may develop anxiety and fear that
can slow recovery (Arkansas Children s Hospital, 2016). It must be conveyed to the stakeholders
that a natural playareamay improve the recovery time of a child suffering from injuries. Children
involved in serious injuries may have a sibling that visits him or her in the hospital. The hospital
may be just as frightening for the sibling as it is for the injured child. A hospital that has a common
outdoor playarea could alleviate the emotional stress for the siblings visiting loved ones in the
hospital. In fact, stress can be a definitive barrier to wellness and recuperating (Feldman, 2016).
A hospital that has an outdoor play area could use this area for young siblings to meet, instead of
in a room full of medical equipment. An outside play area for a hospital would have to be planned
meticulously for safety concerns. It should not be open to the general public and should only be
accessed through the hospital. The play area, weather covered or not, would be sensitive to bad

Emotional Intelligence And Self Awareness Essay
Introduction
Emotional intelligence is conceptualized as a person s ability to overcome stress, communicate
effectively, understand others, cope with challenges, and solve conflicts by identifying, using,
understanding, and managing their emotions positively (Gines, 2015). Emotional intelligence
allows individuals to understand others, without necessarily talking to them. This understanding is
vital since it influences the way we relate with other people. Emotional intelligence can be defined
using four components which include self awareness, self management, social awareness, and
relationship management (Segal, Smith, Shubin, 2016). The essay focuses on these four
components and the skills that help in building emotional intelligence.
Components of Emotional Intelligence
Self awareness involves the ability to understand and evaluate your own emotions through
reflection, self comparisons and feedback from others (Steiner, 2014). Self awareness aims at
enhancing self knowledge, behavioral, and emotional improvements, and accommodating
weaknesses (Steiner, 2014). It allows individuals to understand how they think, behave, and
respond to situations that they encounter. To achieve this, feedback from other people is required.
People who are self aware are self driven, resourceful, eager to learn, self motivated, and problem
solvers. They also portray independence of self concept (Steiner, 2014). Self awareness helps an
individual to practice effective self management.

Personal Identity In Fashion
I, a Personal Project Fashion is historically known as a form of expression, and with style, one

fluctuating between gaining and losing weight almost to this day. Since I value fashion and
style immensely not being able to be comfortable with my body, and in hand with myself, had a
negative impact on my daily life. Also, the negative attitude that came with being overweight in
society and not fitting into the criteria of the ideal body didn t help on my self value and self
esteem. An impact so significant that I changed the direction of my future career in working in
the fashion industry because I thought that my appearance wouldn t have worked in my favor
in the fashion and couture world of size zero models. Although my parents taught me to be
relentless when it came to my dreams and to never undervalue myself, their lessons and words
of wisdom weren t going to change how I perceived the world to think. Had I gone through that
phase of my life nowadays, it would ve carried on a different course. With all the pro self love

attitude of one and their body, in any shape and form. I couldn t be happier with the current trends

Computer Science And Artificial Intelligence
Computer Science Computer science can be defined as a many number of technological variables,
but is primarily defined as the science and processes of information processing in computer
hardware and software, as well as its applications within. Computer science is comprised of many
aspects that form a larger whole, that take a practical and theoretical approach to the capabilities of
computers and how they process input and output information. With computers being conceived as
early as the 1830 s, their capabilities have grown exponentially throughout the course of the 20th
century, with many aspects of computer science becoming commonplace for the modern consumer.
For the purposes of this report, the aspects of computer science that will be covered are formal
languages and artificial intelligence. Artificial Intelligence Artificial intelligence can be defined as
the theory that a technological system such as computers are able to independently perform tasks
that would normally require the operation of a human being to achieve. The primary goal of an
artificial intelligence system in a machine is to autonomously make decisions based on its
perceived environment and efficiently complete a range of given tasks. Artificial intelligence in all
forms seeks to mimic aspects and functions of human interaction and cognitive reception, and in
doing so, the machines adapt to these functions and become a standardised system. Such
technologies initially serve as an exemplary

When my mother and I were on the plane, I thought to myself that when we arrived in Hawaii
and finally, our family was all together everything would go back to normal. I was mistaken.
This was a immense and crucial changing point in my life. Originally from Arizona, I was a

work. Thinking I was clever, but the consequences were C s and D s. Abruptly, when I arrived in

Essay on Attacks on the US Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania
On August 7, 1998, two U.S. embassies were attacked almost simultaneously. One was in
Nairobi, Kenya and the other in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The attack in Kenya involved both a
truck bomb and at least two suicide bombers. The truck was at the back entrance of the embassy
when the bomb went off, and the damage was critical. This attack had more casualties than the
bombing in Tanzania because the truck that contained the bomb was able to get into the inner
embassy compound. Also, the Nairobi embassy was close to the center of the city which was
more populated and led to more deaths. The U.S. embassy was not the only building affected in

the windows were currently being blasted, the roof was caving in, and smoke seemed to appear
from every direction. Before she had analyzed what was going on, she was being yelled at by
Embassy guards to get down on the floor. After fifteen minutes of crawling around without being
able to see, they had reached the ground floor. What Howard saw next terrified her. She saw
lifeless bodies, fires everywhere, and the screams of terrified people. Bill Bar who is director of
the U.S. Information Service in Kenya, was also at the same meeting as Linda Howard. He also

embassy. Some also recall hearing gunfire outside of the embassy before the big explosion. Al

The Bacchae Symbolism
Euripides The Bacchae is a play that uses contrasting places to represent opposing forces or ideas.
Specifically, Euripides uses the city of Thebes to represent the West and he uses the surrounding
wilderness to represent the East. The West is associated with the ideas of rationality, conformity,
and appearance while the East is associated with the ideas of irrationality, nonconformity, and
reality. The West, Thebes, and Pentheus stand in stark contrast to the East, wilderness, and
Dionysus. The West symbolizes masculinity, Greek culture, and city life. In the West lies Thebes, a
city that holds strict laws and ways of thinking; particularly laws restraining women to play a

While the West holds values such as conformity and civilization, the East represents the
nonconformity and irrationality. The East symbolizes freedom from civilization and strict laws
such as those set in the city of Thebes. It symbolizes the wilderness and it s liberation of society
s standards. Along with the freedom from responsibility, the wilderness also symbolizes reality.
An example of the freedom brought by the wilderness is when the women of Thebes flee to the
woods to celebrate the gifts of the earth of wine, honey, and milk, given by Dionysus. By doing
this, they are defying the laws and order of Pentheus. Dionysus is the personification of the ideals
in the East. He represents the liberation and irrationality that comes with the wilderness
surrounding the city of Thebes. He is the missing piece from Pentheus order and control that is
needed to obtain balance. The conflict caused by the characters Pentheus and Dionysus and the
idea s of conformity and liberation are central to the way The Bacchae plays out. It is the conflict
between these two aspects that helps to reveal the theme that for there to be balance, there must be
freedom where there is order. Pentheus hamartia is his lack of understanding of the balance
needed, or the golden mean. Pentheus lacks perception as to how his over orderly ways are what
causes the disruption of Dionysus wild self to be so extreme and incidentally leading to Pentheus

Mass Destruction of Ecosystems to Accommodate the Automobile
Mitigation, to the dismay of some, has become publicly synonymous with notions of preservation
and conservation. Mitigation is neither the preservation nor is it the conservation of habitat.
Mitigation is the creation of new habitat, or the guarding of an existing habitat to make up for the
destruction of similar habitat somewhere else. It was the infamous environmental buzz word of the
nineties, notorious for its criticism and praise by developers. Criticism because mitigation delays
and obstructs their progress, and praise by those who take advantage of loopholes within the
guidelines. All the while ecologists are accepting the mitigations like ill tasting medicine ... Show

Feats that would have been technologically impossible even 50 years ago are now common, such
as the BART crossing under the San Francisco Bay or the extensive bridge systems in the Florida
Everglades.
The technology exists, albeit at what is sometimes great cost. The proportions necessary to create a
tunnel or bridge to accommodate the traffic flow from south Orange county north into Los Angeles
would be fantastic, but possible. But bridge and tunnel systems do offer some alternatives to the
mitigation practices of today. Not entirely eliminating the need to mitigate for the effects of the
transportation systems, but hopefully allowing the system to pass through the habitat not
completely inhibiting the integrity or the function of the ecosystem.
Bridges
Bridges introduce many interesting options for elevating a roadway above sensitive habitat.
Bridges seemingly are best adapted for sensitive aquatic habitats. For example, in place of filling a
wetland in order to construct a road through it, a cable stayed bridge would seemingly accomplish
the same job eliminating the need for the filling of the wetland and providing an alternative with
less environmental impacts. This is by no means suggesting that the bridge would have no
environmental impact, only that the impact would be less

Discrimination Against Gays and Lesbians in the Workplace
The topic I have chosen for my research paper comes under the general heading of culture.
Culture may be defined as the language, beliefs, values, norms, and material objects passed from
one generation to the next. The specific topic I proposed to investigate is discrimination of
homosexuals in the workplace. This topic is particularly interesting to me because I am an
advocate of equality for all. I believe that no matter your race, age, sex, or sexual orientationyou
should be treated fairly. My paper will provide an in depth look at this type of discrimination, the
laws that protect the victims, and explain how this affects our society. Finally, I will describe the
insights I have gained in researching this topic as well as pose some... Show more content on

Some feel that same sex relationships are completely wrong and that they shouldn t be allowed
anywhere, especially in the workplace. But, there are others who are fighting for homosexual
equality. Another opinion is Don t Ask Don t Tell . Some employers feel that, if an employer s
personal life is not evident at work, he/she shouldn t make it known. They feel that what an
employee does in his/her personal life; is personal and they want to have an unbiased opinion.
From researching this topic I have gained a newfound insight about myself and the world around
me. Not only does prejudice affect your race, it also affects how you live your life, a job, and has
the basic needs in life. Homosexuals choose a life different from the norm of society and they have
to deal with the pressures of fitting in where they are told that they do not belong. It is put upon
them to conform to what society wants and not to be different. Researching discrimination against
gays and lesbians in the workplace helped me understand more about the struggles that they face.
Having seen the similarities that racism and sexual orientation have in common has made me want
to research further into the lives of homosexual persons.

CONCLUSION
My Life is a Web site that will be updated a few times a year, especially following important
family events such as new babies, marriages, and other events that I participate in. This means
that there will be more photographs and text that will be added over time. It is my hope that
anyone of any age will be able to access and navigate easily throughout my Web site as it grows.
James J. Cappel and Zhenyu Huang wrote, web usability is a broad concept that encompasses
many aspects of design including a Web site s presentation, its navigation features, and its
functionality or usefulness to visitors (Cappel amp; Huang, 2007). I have kept these attributes in
mind as a created My Life: Capturing the Moments, Creating the Memories Web site.

Workplace Diversity Within The Workplace
As companies become more diverse in the work field employees are getting harder to manage and
understand. One issue in the global market today is workplace diversity. Workplace diversity is
defined as all characteristics and experiences that defined each employee as individuals, but it can
also be misunderstood as discriminationagainst employees. Diversity can include race, ethnicity,
sex, religion, disability and sexual orientation discrimination. One reason why workplace diversity
is important is because when you respect your employees productivity rate rises and many
companies do not know that. A diverse workplace targets to create an inclusive culture that values
and uses the talents of all employees.
Evolution of Workplace Diversity In 1964 the civil rights act made it illegal for employment
organizations to practice discrimination in the workplace. Based on race, ethnicity, sex, religion,
disability and sexual orientation. In 1965 congress pass an executive order which was 11246 it
required contractors to taker affirmative actions and to ensure all employees are getting the same
treatment in the workplace. These laws eliminated discrimination of certain classes in the
workplace and organizations that did not abide by employment fair labor treatment laws were fine
or shut down. Even though some organizations became more diverse the change was slow over
time because of certain classes of workers. In order to establish workplace diversity companies
began to establish

The Development of Wireless Communication Leading to the Alexanderson Alternator
Not much has changed in human nature in the past couple centuries. When we want something, we
desire exactly what we want without deviation and we wish to have it quickly. This is as evident in
modern times as it was in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
It is difficult to imagine for the modern man, but there was once a time when messages and
information had to be delivered by hand, horseback or by vehicle. This was a very big problem in
a world that was expanding and evolving rapidly and was full of growing local and international
turmoil. The more the world began to expand, the harder it became to relay messages and
information, and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Orsted was dumbfounded about his discovery, but had no way of explaining how it was possible
that the electrical current had an effect on the magnetic needle of the compass. After reading about
Orsted s results, a man by the name of AndrГ© Marie AmpГЁre sought to find the reason for this
occurrence and what he discovered changed the field of electrical engineering forever. He
demonstrated that when two wires were placed parallel to one another, both carrying an electric
current, they d either be attracted to or repulsed by each other depending on which directions the
currents were traveling. [4]. Ampere later created what is known as Ampere s Law which relates
electricity and magnetism.
So why was this relationship between electricity and magnetism so important to the field of
electrical information transmission? This question began to be answered by a man named Joseph
Henry in 1830. Intrigued by the recent innovation of electromagnetism, Henry decided to test its
effectiveness in the field of electrical transmission. Henry decided that if he passed current through
one end of a transmission wire he could use the current to activate an electromagnet at its opposite
end. Henry attached a bell to the electromagnet a mile from his current emission point and was able
to ring the bell by sending current through the line. [2] This telegraph system was brilliant, but
Samuel Morse saw even more potential in the model.

Heroes And Heroes In Homer s The Iliad
Book Four of The Iliad ends after Athena coaxed a Trojan archer to fire at the Achaeans. The
transgression prompts a fervent battle following what could have been a truce between the two
sides. Succeeding the outbreak of war, Athena bestows to her chosen hero, Diomedes, the strength
and courage that would make him shine among the Greeks and win him glory (pg. 83). Diomedes
goes forth to slaughter the Trojans in battle, instilling distress in their hearts. With this depiction of
Diomedes, Homer introduces two of his core claims in this selection: one individual can turn the
tides of battle and man is merciless in war. Champions and heroes play an integral role in this
selection of The Iliad. Diomedes begins by almost single handedly pushing back the Trojans;
however, soon after Diomedes rips through them, Hector crushes the ranks of the Achaeans. Even
the minor characters of the epic are shown to greatly influence the battle as a whole. Homer
describes the battle as small, segmented fights between characters, allowing each character to sway
the battle in his side s favor. Heroes on both sides periodically shift the tides of war. No one side
completely controls the battlefield for long within these four Books. Although the selection
concludes with Hector cornering the Achaeans, it seems as though the tides can shift in an instant.
Individuals, not armies, command the battlefield. Throughout this selection, Homer illustrates just
how brutal war, and consequently man, can

Liberalism, Civic Reformism and Democracy Essay
Liberalism, Civic Reformism and Democracy
This paper argues that liberalism provides democracy with the experience of civic reformism.
Without it, democracy loses any tie argumentative or practical to a coherent design of public
policy endeavoring to provide the resources for the realization of democratic citizenship. The case
for liberalism rests on an argumentative reconstruction of the function it performs before the rise of
a world economic order and, more specifically, in the creation of the welfare state after the Second
World War. Accordingly, liberalism defines a reformist political program: it is an emancipatory
political project by virtue of its struggle for an egalitarian and universalist extension of citizenship
rights. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For its later history, liberalism owes as much to its antecedents (situated at the rise of parliamentary
assemblies and of the rule of law in the Middle Ages), as to its linkages with the republican tradition
of communal self government (from the seventeenth century onwards), and with the socialist
tradition in support for an egalitarian model of society (as from the eighteenth century). Indeed, it is
this double tie what determines that the political history of liberalism belongs to the history of
modern democracy: a representative democracy but, thereby, pluralist. The tie also explains that the
economic history of liberalism cannot be separated from the birth of the welfare state.
In both respects liberalism defines a reformist political program: it is an emancipatory political
project by virtue of its struggle for an egalitarian and universalist extension of citizenship rights.
This is but a formulation of the modern idea of citizenship, conceived of as a universalizable
contract of rights. At the same time, liberalism embraces a socio economic emancipatory project
that endeavors to provide the conditions, within the institutional frame of modern societies, for the
accomplishment of citizenship rights. Let us comment on this double characterization.
Liberal Citizenship: A Universalizable Contract of Rights
Firstly, if citizenship denotes the membership statute of individuals and social groups belonging to
a political community (namely, a

  • 2. Civility And Savagery In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of Darkness Jazbeth Aguilar AP Literature December 8, 2017 Joseph Conrad, in his novel Heart of Darkness, uses the contrasting places of Europe and Africa in order to represent opposed forces or ideas that are central to the entirety of the work. This journey back in time, to a prehistoric earth illustrates Marlow s physical journey as well as relates to his emotional and spiritual experience. Marlow characterizes events, ideas, and locations that he encounters in terms of light or darkness. Marlow continuously equates light with knowledge and civility and darkness with mystery and savagery. When he begins his narrative, Marlow evokes light and, therefore, civility, with reality, believing it to be a tangible expression of man s natural state. Similarly, Marlow uses darkness to depict savagery as a vice having escaped with nature. However, as he proceeds deeper into the heart of the African jungle and begins to understand savagery as a primitive form of civilization and, therefore, a reflection on his own reality, the metaphor shifts, until the narrator raises his head at the end of the novel to discover that the Thames seemed to lead into the heart of an immense darkness. The alteration of the light dark metaphor corresponds with Marlow s awareness that the only reality, truth, or light about civilization is that it is, regardless of appearances, is instead darkness. Conrad uses light as a symbol of civilization. Just as darkness is defined as the absence of light, the black ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Contemporary Psychodynamic Authors Contemporary psychodynamic authors define defenses as unconscious mental processes that function to defend against extreme anxiety (e.g. Valliant, 1994). Moreover, defenses are observed as being both protectors against unconscious feelings and relational and cognitive behaviours that protect the self (Cooper, 1998). Currently there is no consensus as to the number of defenses that exist however, in The Ego and the mechanisms of Defense Ana Freud (1936/1986) discusses ten. However, subsequently there has expansion of recognised defences (Kramer 2013). Although, authors vary on the number of defenses that are present, there is a largely an agreement on the role of defenses. The function of these defense mechanisms is to modify internal psychological conditions such as emotions and thoughts by changing the meaning or implication of perceived threats (Kramer 2013). Defenses are utilised differently in borderline personality and comparable disorders and therefore necessitate accurate identification for therapeutic appropriate intervention (Cooper, 1998). Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a severe and dominant psychiatric condition featuring affective instability, marked impulsivity, and substantial deficits in the ability to work and sustain meaningful relationships (Hadjipavlou and Ogrodniczuk 2010). In addition, BPD individuals suffer with deep fear of abandonment, identity conflicts and paranoid ideations (Hadjipavlou and Ogrodniczuk 2010). Further, BPD individuals ... The stories contain a similar animal theme and both question God, yet they differ in their views on God. A similar aspect in the two stories is the animal theme. When Pi is trapped on a lifeboat, his only company is a Bengal Tiger. It was in this circumstance that Pi understood the animal need for survival. Pi says of his transformation from a strict vegetarian into someone who expected to kill to survive, that, I descended to a level of savagery I never imagined possible. (218). Everyday, Pi felt like he was at a crucial point in his life, since he didn t know whether he would live to see tomorrow, especially with Richard Parker on the lifeboat. This is when Pi s animal instincts kicked in and mirrored that of the tiger s. The animal inside of him, and his survival instincts ended up plainly evident in his battle for survival. In the poem The Tyger, the animal theme is exhibited through the narrator s relentless questions of the tiger. In the poem it says, What immortal hand or eye, Dare frame thy fearful symmetry? (23 24). This happens to be the narrator s way of asking who would dare to create an animal so vicious and dangerous. Throughout the poem, the speaker asks various questions about the ferocity of the creature. Be that as it may, this is the nature of a tiger. They are wild animals that are dangerous, and act on instinct. In the two stories, the animal theme depicted conflicts with civilization. Pi was forced to abandon his knowledge and behaviour from the civilized life he once led, in order to embrace his animal instincts and survive. In The Tyger , we can see the contempt of the speaker while considering the behaviours of the wild animal. By looking at this similar element from the two stories, it is easier to perceive how the two cases may be seen. Pi could be looked upon like the tiger, in that they were similar in their animal ways. Many individuals would not have the strength to do what Pi ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Power Tends To Corrupt And Absolute Power Corrupts Absolutely Outline the parts of the introduction to your paper, the main points, the evidence for those points, and the conclusion of your paper. Introduction: As the saying goes, Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely (Marton). A person may by guided by the noblest of ideals and have a cause as pure as gold or as radiant as the sun, but the moment they have absolute power there cause will fall apart and all will have been for not. In Animal Farm by George Orwell, he exemplifies this ideal as we follow Napoleon and his rise to power, or rather his fall from grace towards complete degradation. Over the progression of the novel Napoleon tries to actualize the dream of the other farm animals as he works towards the dream of reaping what one sows . In the process, he is put into a leadership position where he shows, the corrosive effect that power has his morals as the story progresses displaying how power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Main Points: The story begins with Old Major, who is a respected on the farm, and who had given a speech that stirred the animals emotions towards the idea of rebellion. He used his power of respect and trust to persuade the others to pursue the vision in his dream by stating, Nearly the whole of the production of our labor is stolen from us by human beings. • 13. Human Activity And Its Impact On Creation Introduction There is indisputable evidence that the planet earth, the home of all life; wildlife, water, land, and air can be damaged by human activities, consequently making people suffer. Once this happens, it is egregious especially from the fact that creation serves as the revelation of God s presence, majesty, and provision. Irrespective of the point that not every person physically hears God s revelation from the scripture; every humanity has access to God s cosmic revelation; the heavens, the waters, the natural order, the beauty of nature (Psalm 19, Romans 1). Our presumption is that human activity is mixed in its impact on creation; sometimes productive and caring, but often irresponsible, avoidable and sinful. The command from God to tend and keep the earth has never passed away from the fall man; this means that man still bears responsibility of keeping and tending the earth. Therefore, lack of concern and failure to take action carefully as followers of Christ is a poor reflection to the rest of the world. In this particular case, we take responsibility for the damage that we have done to God s cosmic revelation and pledge to take a resolute stance in preserving and protecting the creation over which we have been assigned responsibility by God Himself. In Hermann Hesse s Siddhartha, the topic of relationships versus material items comes up multiple times. As Siddhartha searches to find enlightenment and the meaning in life, he goes through many different trials, but nothing seems to give him pure happiness until the end of the novel. Hesse made it a point for the reader to realize that people were not put on this world to be alone, we were made to have relationships with others. The author also made a clear statement that happiness can not come from material items or even having no material items at all. Creating bonds, such as Siddharthas friendship with Govinda and his relationship with Kamala is the key to enlightenment. Hesse implied that good relationships with others is what allows people to find total enlightenment, or pure happiness. As Govinda and Siddhartha prepare to part ways, Siddhartha gives a powerful speech and says, You have heard my blessing, Govinda. I repeat it. May you travel this path to the end. May you find salvation! . Although Siddhartha cares about Govinda and their friendship, he knows that in order for Govinda to go far in life he must learn for himself, by himself. The Nanjing Massacre was arguably more atrocious than the atomic bombing of Hiroshima in terms of ongoing physical violence. The Japanese Imperial Army s invasion in China prolonged the Nanjing Massacre. Moreover, arguably, it was more atrocious in their case because their own government and army abandoned them. A survivor named Jiang Genfu had to watch his parents and siblings get killed by Japanese soldiers, at the age of nine. The Nanjing Massacre was hardly the unifying event that it has for the Chinese . No one could fathom the overall extent of the terror by looking at confidential accounts and diaries from Chinese survivors. An estimate of 200,000 Chinese civilians and war prisoners were massacred in Nanjing during the first six weeks of the Japanese invasion. Numbers may not mean anything, however, the violence was ongoing. Historians also had to take into account that not all numbers add up because published textbooks present varied information. Beijing stated that 300,000 people were massacred. Both sides often questioned the figures. A professor at Sophia University named Watanabe Shoichi, claimed that 200,000 or 300,000 could not have been massacred in Nanjing, assuming the size of the Japanese ... The broad applicability of Latin was used because it was the official language of the Roman church. The Church was the main source of education and therefore created a web of writings, textbooks, and biblical translations which allowed much of Europe and Asia Minor to understand the message of Western Christianity. That may be because they enjoy shopping. Every product causes some sort of pollution. For instance, automobiles cause a great amount of pollution. Between 1908 and 1927, Ford produced about 15 million Model T cars, which is on average 790 thousand cars produced every year. Today, the company sells about 2.5 million automobiles annually. The titles of the two help set up the point of view that particular story is going to be told in. The story named A Jury of Her Peers was named that because Mrs. Hale and Mrs. Peters, her peers, basically decided the fate of Minnie. They both decided not to turn in the evidence and, in doing so, more than likely kept her out of prison. The term jury used in the title is appropriate because the whole story is depicting a group of townspeople who are investigating the murder scene to decide her fate. Typically, a group of people deciding someone s fate is called a jury. In the play , Trifles, Mr. Hale states that women are constantly worrying over trifles (Glaspell 561). Yet, these are the same trifles that if the men paid attention to they would be able to get plenty of evidence against Minnie. The introductions to the stories are also very different, in the story it starts way before they get to Mrs. Wrights house. It actually starts at Mr. and Mrs. Hales house as the sheriff s buggy stops to pick them up. This allows us to get a feel for the relationships between each of the characters. It also allows us to understand why the women are there in the first place, the sheriffs wife, Mrs. Peters, is there to get some of Mrs. Wrights things for her, and Mrs. Hale is there simply to keep Mrs. Peters company. It states, and then the sheriff came running in to say his wife wished Mrs. Hale would come too adding, with a grin, that he guessed she was getting scarey and wanted another woman along (Glaspell 568). The story also gives a very descriptive view of the Mrs. Wrights home, and namely her kitchen. • 29. Emotional Intelligence And Self Awareness Essay Introduction Emotional intelligence is conceptualized as a person s ability to overcome stress, communicate effectively, understand others, cope with challenges, and solve conflicts by identifying, using, understanding, and managing their emotions positively (Gines, 2015). Emotional intelligence allows individuals to understand others, without necessarily talking to them. This understanding is vital since it influences the way we relate with other people. Emotional intelligence can be defined using four components which include self awareness, self management, social awareness, and relationship management (Segal, Smith, Shubin, 2016). The essay focuses on these four components and the skills that help in building emotional intelligence. Components of Emotional Intelligence Self awareness involves the ability to understand and evaluate your own emotions through reflection, self comparisons and feedback from others (Steiner, 2014). Self awareness aims at enhancing self knowledge, behavioral, and emotional improvements, and accommodating weaknesses (Steiner, 2014). Computer Science And Artificial Intelligence Computer Science Computer science can be defined as a many number of technological variables, but is primarily defined as the science and processes of information processing in computer hardware and software, as well as its applications within. Computer science is comprised of many aspects that form a larger whole, that take a practical and theoretical approach to the capabilities of computers and how they process input and output information. With computers being conceived as early as the 1830 s, their capabilities have grown exponentially throughout the course of the 20th century, with many aspects of computer science becoming commonplace for the modern consumer. For the purposes of this report, the aspects of computer science that will be covered are formal languages and artificial intelligence. Artificial Intelligence Artificial intelligence can be defined as the theory that a technological system such as computers are able to independently perform tasks that would normally require the operation of a human being to achieve. The primary goal of an artificial intelligence system in a machine is to autonomously make decisions based on its perceived environment and efficiently complete a range of given tasks. Artificial intelligence in all forms seeks to mimic aspects and functions of human interaction and cognitive reception, and in doing so, the machines adapt to these functions and become a standardised system. Such technologies initially serve as an exemplary ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

One was in Nairobi, Kenya and the other in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The attack in Kenya involved both a truck bomb and at least two suicide bombers. The truck was at the back entrance of the embassy when the bomb went off, and the damage was critical. This attack had more casualties than the bombing in Tanzania because the truck that contained the bomb was able to get into the inner embassy compound. • 36. The Bacchae Symbolism Euripides The Bacchae is a play that uses contrasting places to represent opposing forces or ideas. Specifically, Euripides uses the city of Thebes to represent the West and he uses the surrounding wilderness to represent the East. The West is associated with the ideas of rationality, conformity, and appearance while the East is associated with the ideas of irrationality, nonconformity, and reality. The West, Thebes, and Pentheus stand in stark contrast to the East, wilderness, and Dionysus. The West symbolizes masculinity, Greek culture, and city life. In the West lies Thebes, a city that holds strict laws and ways of thinking; particularly laws restraining women to play a certain roll and keep them from acting out. It is a city that holds... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While the West holds values such as conformity and civilization, the East represents the nonconformity and irrationality. The East symbolizes freedom from civilization and strict laws such as those set in the city of Thebes. It symbolizes the wilderness and it s liberation of society s standards. Along with the freedom from responsibility, the wilderness also symbolizes reality. An example of the freedom brought by the wilderness is when the women of Thebes flee to the woods to celebrate the gifts of the earth of wine, honey, and milk, given by Dionysus. By doing this, they are defying the laws and order of Pentheus. Dionysus is the personification of the ideals in the East. He represents the liberation and irrationality that comes with the wilderness surrounding the city of Thebes. He is the missing piece from Pentheus order and control that is needed to obtain balance. The conflict caused by the characters Pentheus and Dionysus and the idea s of conformity and liberation are central to the way The Bacchae plays out. It is the conflict between these two aspects that helps to reveal the theme that for there to be balance, there must be freedom where there is order. Pentheus hamartia is his lack of understanding of the balance needed, or the golden mean. They feel that what an employee does in his/her personal life; is personal and they want to have an unbiased opinion. From researching this topic I have gained a newfound insight about myself and the world around me. Not only does prejudice affect your race, it also affects how you live your life, a job, and has the basic needs in life. Homosexuals choose a life different from the norm of society and they have to deal with the pressures of fitting in where they are told that they do not belong. After reading about Orsted s results, a man by the name of AndrГ© Marie AmpГЁre sought to find the reason for this occurrence and what he discovered changed the field of electrical engineering forever. He demonstrated that when two wires were placed parallel to one another, both carrying an electric current, they d either be attracted to or repulsed by each other depending on which directions the currents were traveling. [4]. Ampere later created what is known as Ampere s Law which relates electricity and magnetism. So why was this relationship between electricity and magnetism so important to the field of electrical information transmission? This question began to be answered by a man named Joseph Henry in 1830. Intrigued by the recent innovation of electromagnetism, Henry decided to test its effectiveness in the field of electrical transmission. Henry decided that if he passed current through one end of a transmission wire he could use the current to activate an electromagnet at its opposite end. Henry attached a bell to the electromagnet a mile from his current emission point and was able to ring the bell by sending current through the line. • 46. Heroes And Heroes In Homer s The Iliad Book Four of The Iliad ends after Athena coaxed a Trojan archer to fire at the Achaeans. The transgression prompts a fervent battle following what could have been a truce between the two sides. Succeeding the outbreak of war, Athena bestows to her chosen hero, Diomedes, the strength and courage that would make him shine among the Greeks and win him glory (pg. 83). Diomedes goes forth to slaughter the Trojans in battle, instilling distress in their hearts. With this depiction of Diomedes, Homer introduces two of his core claims in this selection: one individual can turn the tides of battle and man is merciless in war. Champions and heroes play an integral role in this selection of The Iliad. Diomedes begins by almost single handedly pushing back the Trojans; however, soon after Diomedes rips through them, Hector crushes the ranks of the Achaeans. Even the minor characters of the epic are shown to greatly influence the battle as a whole. Homer describes the battle as small, segmented fights between characters, allowing each character to sway the battle in his side s favor. Heroes on both sides periodically shift the tides of war. No one side completely controls the battlefield for long within these four Books. Although the selection concludes with Hector cornering the Achaeans, it seems as though the tides can shift in an instant. Individuals, not armies, command the battlefield. Throughout this selection, Homer illustrates just how brutal war, and consequently man, can ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Without it, democracy loses any tie argumentative or practical to a coherent design of public policy endeavoring to provide the resources for the realization of democratic citizenship. The case for liberalism rests on an argumentative reconstruction of the function it performs before the rise of a world economic order and, more specifically, in the creation of the welfare state after the Second World War. Accordingly, liberalism defines a reformist political program: it is an emancipatory political project by virtue of its struggle for an egalitarian and universalist extension of citizenship rights. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For its later history, liberalism owes as much to its antecedents (situated at the rise of parliamentary assemblies and of the rule of law in the Middle Ages), as to its linkages with the republican tradition of communal self government (from the seventeenth century onwards), and with the socialist tradition in support for an egalitarian model of society (as from the eighteenth century). Indeed, it is this double tie what determines that the political history of liberalism belongs to the history of modern democracy: a representative democracy but, thereby, pluralist. The tie also explains that the economic history of liberalism cannot be separated from the birth of the welfare state. In both respects liberalism defines a reformist political program: it is an emancipatory political project by virtue of its struggle for an egalitarian and universalist extension of citizenship rights. This is but a formulation of the modern idea of citizenship, conceived of as a universalizable contract of rights. At the same time, liberalism embraces a socio economic emancipatory project that endeavors to provide the conditions, within the institutional frame of modern societies, for the accomplishment of citizenship rights. Let us comment on this double characterization. Liberal Citizenship: A Universalizable Contract of Rights Firstly, if citizenship denotes the membership statute of individuals and social groups belonging to a political community (namely, a ...
