 The term novel has been derived from Italian word
novella.
 Novella means a ‘short tale in prose’
 In Greek and Latin the term used for novel is
'roman's or 'romances'.
 Such romances were written in second and third
century

 1)Novel is fictitious or imaginary piece of writing.
 2)A novel presents a comprehensive picture of the
life and society. In other words a novel is a mirror of
life and society.
 3)A novel narrates the story in prose.

 The word "Theme " basically means 'abstract
doctrine ' .
 Theme is something which is not explicit .
 In simple words Theme means the subject of literary
work. Theme answer the common question
'what is the novel about' ?

 E. M. Foster makes difference between 'story 'and
'plot' .
 Story is "a sequence of events arranged in time ".
 Plot is "a sequence or chain of events which are
causally linked with one another.

 Characters are person or people in a novel/drama .
Characters are the agent of action or events.
 According to E. M. Foster there are two types of
characters - 'Round Character' and 'Flat Character '.
 Round character is dynamic and complex. It
represents various qualities.
 Flat character is a static character. It stand for one
quality

 Setting is the social, cultural, political and religious
background in which characters are portrayed.
 The word setting also means the time and place of actions
or events.
 The setting (time or place) of events may be real or
imaginary.
 The setting is the natural or manmade.
 Natural setting is mountain, river, forest, desert, sea,
ocean, the moon or the sky.
 The manmade setting is the building, house, office, street
or rode etc. The setting adds to the effect of presentation
of events and character

 Narrative technique is the way or manner of telling
story or the manner of depicting the events.
 There are three different ways of narrating the story
or events.
 They are the three types of point of view...

 The protagonist in this novel is Silas Marner, a

society in two places - Lantern Yard and Raveloe.
 The novel reflects all the essential features of novel.
This is one of the great and popular novels in English.
