Wong Kar Wai s movie ChungKing Express bears many similarities to Godard s A
Bout de Souffle . To start with, Wai employs a number of cinematic techniques,
obviously derived from the French New Wave, such as for example the jump cut

The purpose of this afternoons show is to answer the question of how does the
context of production influence the nature of poetry?
When it comes to poetry war is an often reoccurring theme. Many poems have been
written in times of crisis when literal expression is the only way to make meaning of
the madness.
For the best part of the last century, the theme of war has been dominated by
negative connotations and portrayals depicting quite realistically the atrocity and
futility of war. We have ANZAC day, our annual reminder of the sacrifice of war.
When even one of our soldiers pays the ultimate price in a tour of duty the nation
mourns. Any band with an appreciable life span has sung a protest song. Be it from
the television, the radio, the internet or the newspaper the message remains the same;
war is bad.
But it wasn t always like this. Back in the good old days when armies fought in
ordered lines on far away fields and shot, hacked and charged each other until there
was only one side left standing war was segregated from civilisation. The battlefield
wasn t reproduced in the living room and the greater public had no comprehension of
the atrocities that occurred.
