The National Leprosy Eradication Programme aims to make India leprosy-free by 2030 by reducing prevalence rates and disabilities caused by leprosy. It has achieved the goal of eliminating leprosy at the national level, but India still accounts for 58% of new global cases. In 2019-20, over 114,000 new cases were detected. The strategies of the program include early detection through active screening programs, ensuring complete and timely treatment, post-treatment surveillance to prevent disabilities, and community awareness and stigma reduction activities. Key challenges include improving early detection, contact surveillance, services for children and urban areas, and disability prevention.
