Challenges of helping learners develop PLNs include skills needed for open, social learning and overcoming barriers to participation.

Trudi Jacobson and Tom Mackey presented Ideas for incorporating discipline-based teaching of metaliteracy, from the development of metaliteracy learning outcomes to the design of collaborative teaching and learning opportunities. Participants gained insights about how to promote metaliterate learning academically and through lifelong learning.

Digital Humanities at Small Liberal Arts Colleges
Digital methodologies and new media are changing the landscape of research and teaching in the humanities. Scholars can now computationally analyze entire corpora of texts or preserve and share materials through digital archives. Students can engage in authentic applied research linking literary texts to place or study Shakespeare in a virtual Globe Theater. Such developments collectively fall under the name “digital humanities,” which includes the humanities and humanistic social sciences and has largely been characterized by computing-intensive, collaborative, interdisciplinary projects at research institutions. Faculty, staff and students at small liberal arts colleges, however, are making significant contributions to the digital humanities, especially by engaging undergraduates both in and out of the classroom. Rebecca Frost Davis, Program Officer for the Humanities at the National Institute for Technology in Liberal Education (NITLE), will introduce the digital humanities landscape and share examples from small liberal arts colleges.

I presented this talk to counselors and educators for an independent school district in Texas. It was intended to provide a contextual understanding of teens' digital media practices by situating them within historical and developmental contexts. The primary purpose was to demonstrate the need for adults and youth-focused institutions to support the development of digital media literacies. Rather than taking a "don't take any risks" approach or a "media are dangerous approach", this talk focuses on the positive ways young people engage with digital media for the purposes of identity exploration, socialization, learning, creativity, and autonomy. Developing digital media literacies, including network and social literacies, empowers students to actively and responsibly participate in the creation of their own media ecologies.

It explore the emergence of false and misleading information in a post-truth world and how metaliteracy is a teaching and learning solution to empower individuals to be informed consumers and creative producers of information in a digital world.

This study evaluated the effectiveness of a family-focused juvenile reentry program called Parenting with Love and Limits (PLL) at reducing recidivism among youth released from residential custody compared to standard aftercare services. Using a quasi-experimental design, the study compared recidivism outcomes for youth who received PLL reentry services versus a matched comparison group who received standard aftercare through a county probation department. Youth in the PLL program had significantly lower rates of rearrest and readjudication, with effect sizes ranging from -0.112 to -0.221. Additionally, PLL services were on average 2 months shorter than standard aftercare, suggesting it can serve more clients at a lower cost while improving outcomes. The findings provide
