RFID and NFC have similarities and differences at both the physical and application layers. While RFID has a longer range, NFC allows two-way communication between devices in close proximity. Using both RFID and NFC together can provide businesses with new opportunities for customer engagement, analytics, and increased ROI through hardware, software, customer retention, and new revenue streams. The document discusses how various RFID and NFC hardware options can be leveraged together in a retail environment.
At the end of this presentation, you will learn:
-Different types of smart cards
-What are differences between MIFARE family members
-How and where to use each technology in payment solutions
-The NFC business ecosystem, use-cases and secure element’s basics
-How to secure e-banking and e-commerce authentication
-The differences between Apple Pay and Android Pay

NFC: Shaping the Future of the Connected Customer ExperienceNFC Forum
This presentation was delivered March 8, 2017 at RETAILTECH JAPAN by Koichi Tagawa, Chairman, NFC Forum, Sony.
Technology is reshaping the face and function of the traditional brick-and-mortar store, forever changing shopping as we know it. NFC-enabled mobile payments and tags are the latest must-have accessories. Forward-thinking retailers are pushing the boundaries to further engage shoppers—often with nothing more than a simple touch, tap, or swipe. NFC, the technology link between the physical and digital world, is helping build a stronger, more meaningful—and therefore more profitable—relationships with customers. NFC-enabled industries, including transport, automotive and IoT, are opening new doors for retailers. All with a simple tap, consumers can make NFC-enabled transactions using a wearable, their car dashboard, or in an NFC-enabled train station. This presentation will highlight how the growth of NFC is leading to “retail anywhere” NFC-enabled applications. The presentation will spotlight NFC use cases in the Internet of Things, Transportation, Automotive markets and examine the future of NFC-based product innovation.

To assess licensing potentials of the key IPR holders, forward citation based Amber Cluster Search was used. Identified NFC patents of a specific IPR holder were used as an input to the cluster search to evaluate licensing opportunities. All the values of licensing potential higher than one are aggregated for a specific potential licensee. Thus, higher in licensing potential value for a specific potential licensee means higher in licensing opportunity.

A presentation by Sheli McHugh and Kristen Yarmey at Internet Librarian 2011 in Monterey, California.
Near Field Communication (NFC) is a new technology that allows devices such as cell phones to transmit information wirelessly across a small distance. While it has many commercial applications (e.g., using your smartphone as a credit card at the grocery store), NFC could also have future applications for libraries as a new way to link physical materials with digital information. Placing particular attention on cataloging, metadata, and circulation, this presentation will discuss potential strategies for utilizing NFC in libraries, from peer to peer loaning to embedding catalog records in books.

People who have been involved with NFC almost cringe at the idea the Apple invented NFC with the introduction of Apple Pay, but the reality is that Apple Pay did serve a very important purpose of bringing NFC into general consciousness of consumers. Now we need to build on the growing success of NFC in payments and help support and develop other uses cases for NFC across all industry verticals. This panel discussion covered some of the more innovative uses of NFC now and in the future.

Near field communication (NFC) is a set of standards for smartphones and similar devices to establish radio communication with each other by touching them together or bringing them into proximity, usually no more than a few inches.
Sept 2009: this is an updated presentation of the Near Field Communication (NFC) technology. I tried to explain how NFC works on a SIM card, what are the standardization bodies, roles and actors in the ecosystem.
This presentation is for developers and describes technical architecture to implement a NFC application on a SIM card using Java and APDU commands (JSR-177, 257 and 268).
These slides will be presented during the Smart University 2009 in Nice, Sophia-Antipolis.

The Google Nexus S offers support for Near Field Communication (NFC), an extension to an RFID smart card protocol popularly used for secure access, metro passes (Oyster/Clipper), and electronic money (FeliCa/Octopus). NFC in smartphones promises adding these features to the phone you carry by allowing the it to emulate both RFID tag and reader.
NFC additionally adds new capabilities like exchanging configuration data such as WiFi settings, trading vCard contact information, reading URLs, triggering SMS text messages or initiating calls, and secure bi-directional communication between NFC devices.
This session will cover what NFC and RFID is and is not, what Android on the Nexus S is currently capable of, and some examples of how to add NFC to your apps.

I have heard many times that architecture is not important for the front-end. Also, many times I have seen how developers implement features on the front-end just following the standard rules for a framework and think that this is enough to successfully launch the project, and then the project fails. How to prevent this and what approach to choose? I have launched dozens of complex projects and during the talk we will analyze which approaches have worked for me and which have not.

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.
