 Near Field Communications (NFC) is a short range
wireless technology – less than 10cm
 Designed to provide simple communication between
enabled devices.
 Aims to allow contactless transactions and connectivity in
a fully interoperable way
 Many of the world’s leading device manufacturers,
semiconductor producers, mobile network operators and
applications companies support and encourage the use of
NFC.

4. Bluetooth Smart
(Bluetooth Low Energy)
• BT Smart is designed specifically for low power devices
(battery/coin cell powered)
• BT Smart is designed to exchange small amounts of data
– not streaming of video and audio
• BT Smart is designed for intermittent/occasional use
• BT Smart is designed to be low cost
• BT Smart is supported by most new Smartphones
including iPhone (4S, 5, 5S & 6)
• BT Smart is part of the Bluetooth V4.0 standards

5. Printed electronics
(aka Organic electronics and Plastic electronics)
• A set of printing methods used to create electronic devices on
various substrates.
• Printing typically uses common printing equipment such as
screen printing, flexography, gravure, offset lithography, and
inkjet.
• Very low cost processes.
• Creates functional electronic devices, such as thin film
transistors, LEDs or resistors.
• Is expected to facilitate widespread, very low-cost electronics
for applications such as flexible displays, smart labels
(NFC/RFiD), decorative and animated posters, and active
clothing.

understanding and analysing NFC antenna design
• NFS can help you design antennae quickly and
painlessly

9. Antenna modelling
• NFS have developed modelling techniques which allow
a design to be analysed and it’s performance to be
predicted using:
– Specific resistance of materials
– Antenna track thickness, width and length
– Material permeability and permittivity
– Generation of S parameters across frequency range
– Simulation of complex impedance and phase

10. Antenna analysis
• Once a design has been manufactured NFS can
analyse the antenna and compare the results with the
model
• NFS can calculate accurate matching circuit values
• NFS can measure the performance of the matching
circuit and tuning to confirm correct operation
