synchronized working of a
set of sub-applications
RF wave signals from a cell phone and/or IoT device are captured by the Antennas and
Remote Radio Units using advanced MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) which
form the head portion of a cellular tower.
The 5G Process
These signals are further converted to fiber optic signals via Beamforming techniques and
send for further processing. The C-RAN (Cloud Radio Access Network) architecture make
RRUs more scalable, flexible, efficient, and compatible making 5G networks faster and
efficient.

signals before being sent for
further processing and vice

Remote Radio Units (RRU)
From Industrial Ethernet connector like ix Industrial™ IP20 Connector to high speed
rugged outdoor I/O connectors, RJ45 modular jacks and transceivers, Amphenol has
the best solutions to offer for RRUs and Antennas. Amphenol
OCTIS™ EazyPwr™ connectors finds extensive application in Remote Radio heads and
other applications like Small cells, Macrocells, Microwave links and Distributed
Antenna Systems
These signals are further
transported to the Base Units
where they are converted to
electrical signals.
With 5G networking, the BBUs
are centralized with a single BBU
unit catering to multiple
networking towers making the
system less complex as well as
more efficient and economical,
with immense speed advantage.
Baseband Units (BBU)
Fiber optic signals arriving from the RRU
are converted to electrical signals at the
BBU and after adjusting for the baseband
frequencies, are further transported to the
core network.
Amphenol has a range of high-speed input-output connectors, USBs, and D-Subs that
help in the efficient functioning of these Base Units. With a 0.60mm pitch, Mini Cool
Edge IO connectors are next-generation OverPass™ solution capable of transmitting
high-speed signals up to 56G PAM4. Also supporting higher density data
transmission in a BBU is Amphenol's PCIe® M.2 Connector, which is PCIe® Gen 5
ready with 67 contacts on a 0.50mm pitch.
Edge Servers / Edge Data Center
Edge servers can be simply
described as high-power
computers or servers which are
placed near or at the "edge" of
the 5G network.
This makes the 5G network
multiple times faster by reducing
the latency, making it an ideal
technology for mission critical
equipment using Artificial
Intelligence.
Amphenol's Card-edge connectors, high-performing I/O solutions, DDRs, D-sub, SAS, SATA
connectors and High Speed Backplane connectors like ExaMAX+® are distributed within the
edge servers enhancing their performance and reliability.
Besides these, our range of standard, slim, micro and mini cool edge connectors in various
pitch sizes are an apt fit to the latest Edge Server.
Network Switches & Gateways
Network gateways, switches and servers are an integral part of the 5G network,
especially inside the 5G core, where all the post processing of the signal is carried out
before being sent to the data centers.
The gateways implement novel techniques like Network Function Virtualization
(NFV), Carrier Aggregation (CA) and Network Slicing to decode and multiplex the
signals and then route them to the data centers for further processing.

Transponders are interconnected units associated with the RRU or the BBU and play a
large part in the transport of the 5G signal. The first half of the transport procedure is
called fronthaul, where fiber optic signals from the RRU are fine-tuned by the transponder
Then passed on to the BBU and edge servers that are part of the CRAN. The latter half of
the procedure where the signals from the CRAN unit are passed on by optics or wireless to
the core and further on to the data center is called Backhaul.

  • 5. RF wave signals from a cell phone and/or IoT device are captured by the Antennas and Remote Radio Units using advanced MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) which form the head portion of a cellular tower. The 5G Process

  • 7. Intricately designed Antennas and Remote Radio Units precisely pick up the high-speed RF wave signals from a cell phone and IoT device to convert them into fiber optic signals before being sent for further processing and vice versa. Remote Radio Units (RRU)

  • 9. These signals are further transported to the Base Units where they are converted to electrical signals. With 5G networking, the BBUs are centralized with a single BBU unit catering to multiple networking towers making the system less complex as well as more efficient and economical, with immense speed advantage. Baseband Units (BBU)
  • 10. Fiber optic signals arriving from the RRU are converted to electrical signals at the BBU and after adjusting for the baseband frequencies, are further transported to the core network.
  • 11. Amphenol has a range of high-speed input-output connectors, USBs, and D-Subs that help in the efficient functioning of these Base Units. With a 0.60mm pitch, Mini Cool Edge IO connectors are next-generation OverPass™ solution capable of transmitting high-speed signals up to 56G PAM4. Also supporting higher density data transmission in a BBU is Amphenol's PCIe® M.2 Connector, which is PCIe® Gen 5 ready with 67 contacts on a 0.50mm pitch.
  • 12. Edge Servers / Edge Data Center Edge servers can be simply described as high-power computers or servers which are placed near or at the "edge" of the 5G network. This makes the 5G network multiple times faster by reducing the latency, making it an ideal technology for mission critical equipment using Artificial Intelligence.

  • 14. Network Switches & Gateways Network gateways, switches and servers are an integral part of the 5G network, especially inside the 5G core, where all the post processing of the signal is carried out before being sent to the data centers.
  • 15. The gateways implement novel techniques like Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Carrier Aggregation (CA) and Network Slicing to decode and multiplex the signals and then route them to the data centers for further processing.

  • 17. Transponders are interconnected units associated with the RRU or the BBU and play a large part in the transport of the 5G signal. The first half of the transport procedure is called fronthaul, where fiber optic signals from the RRU are fine-tuned by the transponder Then passed on to the BBU and edge servers that are part of the CRAN. The latter half of the procedure where the signals from the CRAN unit are passed on by optics or wireless to the core and further on to the data center is called Backhaul.
  • 18. Amphenol’s optical transceiver products are designed to suit 5G applications including fronthaul and backhaul. These transceivers support advanced technologies like BIDI, DWDM, LWDM and tunable CWDM and are available in data rates ranging from 1G to 25G and 100G to 400G.
