This document discusses the key differences between new media and traditional media. New media is characterized by digitality, interactivity, hypertextuality, dispersal, decentralization, virtuality, and multiple uses. It presents both optimistic and pessimistic views on the significance of new media in contemporary society. Optimistically, new media widens consumer choice, allows more participation, and enhances social interaction. However, concerns include media imperialism, a threat to democracy from large corporations controlling information, information overload, internet crimes, and a digital divide where not all people have access.
