Media Usage Mass media has become a powerful tool in shaping our culture, and is largely
reflective of our society today. According to our text book and class lecture notes, mass media can be
loosely defined as the technological vehicles through which mass communication takes place, along

Finally, our society uses mass communication and media as a form of education via research.
Initially, I was unaware of the information I consumed on a daily basis from varying media
sources; however after reviewing my journal of media usage, I became acutely aware of just how
influential media is to my education and understanding of the world. For example, I spend a large
amount of time doing research for my homework– from required research to looking up the meaning
of a word or phrase. I am often exposed to hundreds of sites– functioning as informational
sources–with a simple click on a URL or hyperlink. Our culture is influenced through various
mediums of media, and educated on various topics including, culture, opinions, and people.
However, we must be cautious of the validity of the information we obtain and use, because the
media is constantly attempting to sway or manipulate public opinion. By keeping a journal of my
media usage I was able to better understand how media plays an important role in my life. I also
became more aware of the influence media has on society, and how I can become more cognizant of
its notable impacts. In our society media plays a larger role than most individuals realize. As mass
communication and media are constantly evolving it is important that we understand these changes.
Through this deepened awareness I hope to immerse myself in a media culture that is free from

The Power of Mass Media in Todays World: The Perceptions and Realities Behind the Curtains
It's a Thursday night and Jessie is sitting down, munching on some chips and dip, and watching the
weekly episode of Scandal with her friend Mary in the dim light of their living room. A scene comes
on the television with two gay men intimately approaching each other, about to have sex. For a
minute, the girls are tensely sitting in silence, not speaking, but awkwardly staring at the television.

supporters for their political agenda. Today, technology is used to spread a lot of information to
many different people around the world. Online websites play a vital role in spreading political
agendas throughout the masses of the country. Through the technological changes, including

Different forms of media have been around for centuries. There have been drastic changes in the use
of radio, television, computers, and more over the years. The developments have had significant
influences on American culture. As the use ofmass media continues to evolve, so will the way we
interpret, view, and use them.
Newspaper & Magazines
Mass media over the century has grown from newspaper and magazines to satellites and computers.
Newspapers were the primary source of news and information in the 19th and early 20th century.
With the invention of the telegraph, grew mass circulation of newspapers. Magazines were also a

magazines further in to a decline. As the use of television grew and as television sets evolved to
color, radio began to see its decent in the realm of mass medias. Advertising began to flourish on

Women can easily develop insecurities in the way they look and feel about themselves because of
magazines. Women choose to read certain magazines according to their interests. However, their

INTRODUCTION Mass Media reaches a large part of our audiences today, whether it be from the
movies, advertising, the internet, newspapers, magazines, twitter, you tube, Instagram, Facebook
and so forth and because of this it can affect how we think and believe, both personally and as a
society. Today, I will address three specific areas that productmass media channels have been used
and has made a difference, either to me personally, or in society in general.

channel is, twitter, Facebook, and Instagram and that is due to people wanting to be a part of the
action. Because the networks are creating more shows where you can use your DVR viewing, this
can mean the difference between 100 episodes to 10 for social media.

The world around us is always changing, they may be subtle changes at first and gradually
changing over time. If you think about when you were younger or even before; when your
parents were, you'll remember how the first televisions was this big box that showed moving
pictures in black and white. In this time of age, you will see how drastically a television is from
the first one. We now have flat screen televisions with color! Of course, this does not happen
overnight. Television has a lot of influence on a person, it starts from when we are young. When
newer forms of technology began to modify the older versions like the arrival of the internet the

Mass Media Is An Integral Part Of Everyday Life
Mass media is an integral part of everyday life. Society depends on the various forms of media for
information, education, and personal entertainment. Mass media positively and negatively
influences beliefs, values, and expands knowledge to bring awareness to various social events.
Media also impacts the way children and adolescences understanding of violence, racism, suicide,
aggression, and sexual stereotyping. If viewing these portrayals is accepted, then mass media does in
fact negatively impact child and adolescent development because of the content displayed on
movies, television, and music. Children and adolescents learn to accept and have distorted views of
violence, racism, sexual stereotyping, sexual behavior and suicide represented on TV. According to
the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (2015), children ages 8–18 spend an
average of 7.5 hours a day with media and technology screens. Today, television shows and movies
can be viewed on numerous devices. Children today will spend 27,375 hours viewing media which
is more time than they will spend in a classroom setting in high school. Media entertainment is
persuasive and has a strong influence on today's children. The American Academy of Pediatrics has a
policy statement that concludes, "Exposure to violence in media, including TV, movies, music and
video games, represents a significant risk to the health of children and adolescents" (American
Academy of Psychiatry, 2012). Today, the

Social Media and the Masses Social media has connected more people on a global level, but it has
also influenced how socially invested people are and are not in face–to–face conversations. The way
people network with each other has changed dramatically since the availability of the internet and
cellphones has increased exponentially. Since the dissemination of mass media, more people have
become infatuated with the social world. This has caused most people to worry about how certain
aspects of their lives look to others. People are losing the ability to maintain their well– being with
the effects of social media. The impact of social media on children is daunting, this is an issue
that should be addressed immediately or the consequences may be irreversible. Children are no
longer willing to play outside and make new friends; they have been relying on a buffer since social
media has become more popular. The children of this current generation are no longer experiencing
the steps essential for becoming a well–rounded and knowledgeable individual[s]. With the current
usage of electronics, many of the children are not learning how to express themselves on an
emotional level. The building blocks of sustaining a healthy lifestyle and healthy interactions are
being pushed to the wayside. Some medical professionals are even trying to make the connection
of social media and electronics to ADHD. Children who have been spending more time in front
of screens have shown a decrease in the ability to focus on tasks that are more complex. This has
made it harder for the kids to focus in school, and that can lead to failing grades that affect their
schooling (Alderman, Lesley). Another serious condition affecting this current generation of
children is the disease of obesity, children rely on electronics for mental and physical stimulation.
This has become a nationwide epidemic that shows no evidence of slowing down. Without
maintaining some degree of physical activity as a child has been shown to cause serious diseases
later in that individual's life. Lack of a healthy lifestyle in the child's life can lead to cardio vascular
disease and type two diabetes, this will have a significant impact on how long and how well the
