Economy and Government in New
France
- New France depended on France for its
survival.
- France supplied:
- Colonists
- Supplies
- Military support
• Initially, the merchants (sales people) who ran
New France were more concerned with
trading furs than sending wealth and
resources back to France.

• They cared little about building settlements,
and as a result, fewer people moved there and
the colony did not prosper.
• In 1663, King Louis the 14th changed this…
• He took control of the colony away from the
merchants and set up a sovereign council to
govern the colony.
GOVERNOR
INTENDANT
BISHOP
APPOINTED COUNCILLORS
GOVERNOR:
• the most powerful member who is the King’s
personal representative. (usually an army officer or
noble)
• took care of defence and relations with allies and
enemies.
INTENDANT:
• The second in command
• In charge of day-to-day affairs of the colony
(supervise courts, managed economy, saw that
roads were built, took care of settlers)
BISHOP:
• The head of the church
• The royal government paid colony expenses, so
taxes in the colony were much lower than in
France.
APPOINTED COUNCILLORS:
• Citizens of New France appointed by the sovereign
council to be a part of the new government.
The Catholic Church in New France
- Religion was important in France, therefore it was
important in the colonies.
- Most French people were Catholic, and they felt
that it was important to spread the Catholic faith
to the First Nations in Canada.
- Priests, nuns, and missionaries worked in
hospitals, ran schools, and took care of the poor.
- Colonists supported the church by donating a
portion of their income called a tithe.
• A particular group of missionaries known as
Jesuits provided an important source of
information about this time period.
• They arrived in New France in 1625 and sent
many of their journals back to France where
they were published.
Populating the Colony:
- Between 1665 and 1673 the King of France
sent about 900 single women to New France
to become wives.
- Some were orphans, others were poor. If
women married, the king gave each couple an
ox, a cow, two pigs, two chickens, beef, and
money.
- These women were known as the Filles de Roi,
the king’s daughters. Within 14years, the
population of New France tripled.
Women in New France
• The family was the centre of daily life.
• Women worked with their husbands, raised
children, minded the home, and took care of
finances.

• Girls received a better education than they
would in France.
Economy of New France
• The social structure was based on the
seigneurial system. This meant the
king gave pieces of land along the St.
Lawrence River to nobles, called
seigneurs.
• These nobles then found settlers to
become tenants and work the land
for them. Each habitant gave their
siegneur a portion of their crops each
year as payment.
Impacts of Colonization
- Read the “GET READY” section on page 82.
- In groups of 2-3, complete the chart after
reading each of the following stories in your
textbook:
- “The Beautiful Trail” (pg.82)
- “The Beaver Wars” (pg.84)
- “Brothers and Enemies” (pg.85)
