Pizza Team Structure
• 2-Pizza team: refers to the group size
• Concept
   – If team size is bigger than what can be fed by two pizzas,
     then the size of the group is inappropriate. Leads to
     higher cost of communication within the team and hence
     has a negative impact on the productivity
   – E.g. Amazon.com and Apple Inc.

• Why 2-pizzas are enough
   –   Less social loafing
   –   Constructive interaction is more likely
   –   No one can fade into the background
   –   Small teams are more satisfying to their members
Network Team Structure
• Definition: structure in which independent
  people act as independent nodes to work
  together for a common purpose.
Spaghetti Team Structure
• It is characterised by a flat (in terms of hierarchy) and
  project focussed work groups.
• It is a type of boundary-less organisation which seeks to
  eliminate the chain of command having limitless span of
  control and replaces departments with empowered
  teams
• Advantages
   – Faster communication facilitating quick decision
      making
   – Motivates employees and develops their abilities
   – Job rotation: development in all functional areas.
Fish Net Organizational Design
• Concept: Fish Net
   – if we lift up any one node of this net we can
     observe a dynamically created hierarchy where
     the lifted node is on top.
   – In this way we can lift and drop nodes at will,
     creating new and destroying old hierarchies.

• Challenge:
   – Assigning the managerial role:Uses information tools
• E.g. TCS uses this type of a design.
Virtual Organization
• It is a small, core organization that outsources
  its major business functions.
• Highly centralized with little or no
  departmentalization.Independent

Boundary-less Organization
• Seeks to eliminate the chain of command having
  limitless span of control and replaces departments
  with empowered teams. The basic motive is to remove
  both the vertical as well as the horizontal boundaries.
• Motive: to remove vertical and horizontal boundaries.
   – Vertical Boundaries: flatten hierarchy
   – Horizontal Boundaries: replace functional
     departments with cross-functional teams.
• E.g. Xerox

  • 2. Classification of Design Options • Team Structure – Pizza Structure – Network Team Structure – Spaghetti Team Structure – Fishnet Team Structure • Virtual Organizations • Boundary-less Organizations
  • 3. Pizza Team Structure • 2-Pizza team: refers to the group size • Concept – If team size is bigger than what can be fed by two pizzas, then the size of the group is inappropriate. Leads to higher cost of communication within the team and hence has a negative impact on the productivity – E.g. Amazon.com and Apple Inc. • Why 2-pizzas are enough – Less social loafing – Constructive interaction is more likely – No one can fade into the background – Small teams are more satisfying to their members
  • 4. Network Team Structure • Definition: structure in which independent people act as independent nodes to work together for a common purpose.
  • 5. Spaghetti Team Structure • It is characterised by a flat (in terms of hierarchy) and project focussed work groups. • It is a type of boundary-less organisation which seeks to eliminate the chain of command having limitless span of control and replaces departments with empowered teams • Advantages – Faster communication facilitating quick decision making – Motivates employees and develops their abilities – Job rotation: development in all functional areas.
  • 6. Fish Net Organizational Design • Concept: Fish Net – if we lift up any one node of this net we can observe a dynamically created hierarchy where the lifted node is on top. – In this way we can lift and drop nodes at will, creating new and destroying old hierarchies. • Challenge: – Assigning the managerial role:Uses information tools • E.g. TCS uses this type of a design.
  • 7. Virtual Organization • It is a small, core organization that outsources its major business functions. • Highly centralized with little or no departmentalization.Independent • Quest for flexibility Research and Advertising Agency Development Consulting firm • E.g.   • 8. Boundary-less Organization • Seeks to eliminate the chain of command having limitless span of control and replaces departments with empowered teams. The basic motive is to remove both the vertical as well as the horizontal boundaries. • Motive: to remove vertical and horizontal boundaries. – Vertical Boundaries: flatten hierarchy – Horizontal Boundaries: replace functional departments with cross-functional teams. • E.g. Xerox
