A network is a system that connects computers to share resources and exchange data. Common network types include LANs which connect nearby devices via cables, and WANs which connect multiple LANs across wide areas. Hybrid networks like CANs and MANs combine aspects of LANs and WANs. Networks are structured with servers that control access to shared resources, or in peer-to-peer structures with equal sharing between nodes. Topologies determine how nodes are physically connected, such as in a bus, star, ring, or mesh configuration. Protocols define rules for data transmission between devices on the network.
