Definition
• Nebulisation is the process of medication administration via inhalation which
utilizes nebulizer.
• Nebulizer : device used to administer medication to the respiratory tract
• Nebulization Therapy is to liquefy and remove retained secretions from the
respiratory tract.

Purposes
• To administer medications directly into respiratory tract for sputum expectoration.
• To liquefy and remove retained thick secretion from the lower respiratory tract.
• To increase vital capacity.
• To relieve dyspnoea.
• To reduce inflammatory and allergic responses of Upper Respiratory Tract.
• To prevent post-operative complication.

Contraindications
1) Patients with unstable and increased blood pressure.
2) Individuals with Cardiac irritability ( may result to dysrhythmias).
3) Persons with increased pulses.
4) Unconscious patients ( inhalation may be done via mask but the therapeutic effect
may be significantly low).

Procedure to use a nebulizer
1. Wash the hands thoroughly and make sure they are completely dry.
2. Collect the nebulizer, tubing, and mask ready to assemble.
3. Fill the medicine cup with the prescribed dosage of medication, closing the
medicine cup tightly.
4. Connect one end of the tube to the nebulizer and the other end to the medicine
cup.
5. Place the mask onto the patient face, ensuring it is comfortable for the patient.

6. Plug in the nebulizer and turn it on. Mist should appear.
7. Some older nebulizers can take as long as 25 minutes to deliver the
medication.
8. If a person needs to interrupt the treatment, turn-off the nebulizer to
avoid wasting medication.
9. Turn off the machine when the medication cup is empty.
10. Take the nebulizer apart and wash the medicine cup and mask in warm
soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and air dry. Once dry, store in a clean place.

respiratory tract.
To soften thick, tenacious mucous which helps in its expulsion from the respiratory
tract.
To relieve coughing.
To aid in absorption of O2.
To improve breathing.

1. Heat up the water to boiling.
2. Carefully pour the hot water into the bowl.
3. Drape the towel over the back of your head.
4. Turn on a timer
5. Shut your eyes and slowly lower your head toward the hot water until you’re about
8 to 12 inches away from the water. Be extremely careful to avoid making direct
contact with the water.
6. Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose for at least 2 to 5 minutes.
Donot steam Longer than 10 to 15 minutes for each session.
