What is a Trusted Service Manager?
A Trusted Service Manager (TSM) plays a vital role in the Near Field Communication (NFC) ecosystem.
A TSM acts as a trusted middle- man within the deployment of mobile payments:
1. Coordinating technical and business relationships of multiple stakeholders: mobile network operators (MNO), banks and other service providers (SP).
2. Securely installing and personalizing applications on the Secure Element (SE).
3. Handling banking and mobile security and securing consumer information.
4. Performing lifecycle management tasks for installed applications.
5. Securely generating, managing and distributing cryptographic keys
TSM models
An SP communicates with an MNO to add an application on an NFC device.
But the reality is more complex.
Utopian NFC ecosystem with one TSM.
Different organisation see themselves as TSM and no single organisation is trusted by everyone.
One TSM creates ownership issues regarding relationships and data.
Current NFC ecosystem: Root TSM and SP TSM model
A Root TSM - manages the Root Security Domain (SD) on the NFC device and its keys. - informs SP TSMs of key events on applications. - interacts with the phone. - interacts with service provider TSMs.
An SP TSM - provisions, manages, loads and personalises applications into the SD on behalf of SPs. - manages their own secure environment. - interacts with the phone to install and personalise services. - interacts with Root TSMs to communicate state changes of applications.
Why TSM?
1. Multiple markets becoming part of the mobile ecosystem are required to collaborate.
2. TSMs are their Single Point of Contact.
3. Markets such as payments, transit and access control need to cooperate.
4. TSMs allow stakeholders to effectively communicate and handle transactions securely with each other.
Becoming a TSM?
Service providers can keep control of their customers by becoming their own TSM.
This ensures flexibility and scalability to meet future market demands.

NFC: ADVANTAGES, LIMITS AND FUTURE SCOPEIJCI JOURNAL
Near Field Communication (NFC) Technology represents short range (practically up to 4 cm) wireless communication offering safe yet simple and intuitive communication between electronic devices that we use on a daily basis. Users of devices having NFC application in it can simply touch their devices to other
similar elements having NFC application to communicate with them, making application and data usage easy and convenient. NFC can be called as the next generation of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) as technically its working principal is based on RFID however from application point of view it is similar to Bluetooth in some ways since it allows communication between two active devices. NFC can be the future medium of contactless electronic payment as it inhibits eavesdropping on NFC - enabled transactions pertaining to its short range, however range can be extended by attackers using some range extension system. In this paper we briefly discussed the advantages, limits or challenges of NFC technology along with its applications which opens up exciting new usage scenarios for mobile devices.
Near Field Communications (NFC) is a short range, zero configuration, wireless communication, it evolves from radio frequency identification (RFID) and inter-working technology, combining induction card reader, induction card with peer-to-peer function on a single chip to identify and exchange data with compatible devices over short distances.

CFD Simulation of By-pass Flow in a HRSG module by R&R Consult.pptxR&R Consult
CFD analysis is incredibly effective at solving mysteries and improving the performance of complex systems!
Here's a great example: At a large natural gas-fired power plant, where they use waste heat to generate steam and energy, they were puzzled that their boiler wasn't producing as much steam as expected.
R&R and Tetra Engineering Group Inc. were asked to solve the issue with reduced steam production.
An inspection had shown that a significant amount of hot flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes, where the heat was supposed to be transferred.
R&R Consult conducted a CFD analysis, which revealed that 6.3% of the flue gas was bypassing the boiler tubes without transferring heat. The analysis also showed that the flue gas was instead being directed along the sides of the boiler and between the modules that were supposed to capture the heat. This was the cause of the reduced performance.
Based on our results, Tetra Engineering installed covering plates to reduce the bypass flow. This improved the boiler's performance and increased electricity production.
It is always satisfying when we can help solve complex challenges like this. Do your systems also need a check-up or optimization? Give us a call!
Work done in cooperation with James Malloy and David Moelling from Tetra Engineering.

3. NFC – What is it ???
NFC is an extension of Radio frequency identification.
NFC or Near Field Communication is a short range high
frequency wireless communication technology.
A radio communication is established by touching the two
phones or keeping them in a proximity of a few centimeters.
4. HISTORY OF NFC TECHNOLOGY
I. In 2004, NFC Forum was formed by Nokia, Philips, Sony
to set standards for NFC . Every NFC enabled device will
have an “N-Mark” trademark ,developed by NFC
Forum.
II. In 2006, first mobile phone( nokia 6131) with NFC was
released by NOKIA.
III. In 2010, first android phone SAMSUNG NEXUS S with
NFC support was released.
IV. Sony introduced "Smart Tags", which use NFC
technology to change modes and profiles on sony
smartphones.
5.
6. OPERATION OF NFC
Near field communication is based on inductive-
coupling.
NFC works using magnetic induction between two
loop antennas.
So, NFC use an initiator and a target; the initiator
actively generates an RF field that can power a
passive target.
Operating frequency is 13.56 MHz and data rate
varies from106 Kbit/s to 424 Kbit/s.
7. MODES OF OPERATION
Active mode-
In this mode, both devices with NFC chip can generate
an electromagnetic field and exchange information
with each other.
Two NFC enabled devices transferring
data in active mode
Inducing magnetic
field
8. Passive mode-
A passive device, such as
an NFC tag, contains
information that other
devices can read but does
not read any information
itself, so there is only one
active user.
A NFC-enabled mobile phone is
paired with a RFID-tagged "smart
poster"
9. APPLICATIONS OF NFC
1) Touch and go
Applications such as access control, where the user needs only
to bring the device storing the ticket or access code close to the
reader.
A person gathering info
about a movie using his
NFC enabled Mobile
Phone
10. 2) Touch and Confirm
Applications such as mobile payment where the
user has to confirm the interaction by entering a
password or just accepting the transaction.
11. 3) Touch and Connect
Linking two NFC-enabled devices to
enable peer to peer transfer of data.
4) A latest development is that NFC
can be used to configure Wi-Fi
networks through mobile devices.
13. ADVANTAGES OF NFC
Reduces cost of electronic issuance .
Secure communication.
No special software.
No manual configuration and settings.
No search and pair procedure.
NFC can be used together with existing
technologies like Bluetooth and thus act for
longer range also.
NFC uses are practically limitless.
14. DISADVANTAGES OF NFC
The system has the limitation that it can be operated only with
devices under a short range i.e. around 10 cm.
The data transfer rate is very less at about 106kbps, 212 kbps and
424kbps.
Eavesdropping
Data Corruption and Manipulation
Theft
15. COUNTER MEASURES
o Use secure channel (so that only the authorized
device could decode the encrypted information).
o Some NFC devices “listen” for data corruption
attacks and prevent them before they have a
chance to get up and running.
o Use Active – Passive modes with encrypted keys
(this means one device receives info and the other
sends it instead of both devices receiving and
passing information).
o Keeping phones password protected.
17. FUTURE OF NFC
New generations of iPhone, iPod and iPad products would
reportedly be equipped with NFC capability which would enable
small-scale monetary transactions.
Recently, Microsoft announced that all Windows Phone 8
devices will make use of the NFC technology.
18. CONCLUSION
Mobile handsets are the primary target for NFC and soon NFC
will be implemented in most handheld devices.
The advancements in mobile wireless technology and
communication standards have enabled usage of contactless and
NFC based payment models.
The mobile wallet based payment model is gaining considerable
momentum and is currently being seen as one of the key payment
model, to promote contactless payment processing practices.
The mobile wallet technology enables the end-users to make
payments with their mobile wallet accounts, without having to
use credit or debit cards and hence this technology can also help
users that do not use credit or debit cards.
