This document summarizes the three main types of rocks: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic. Igneous rocks form from cooling magma or lava. Sedimentary rocks form through the compaction and cementation of sediments. Metamorphic rocks form from the alteration of existing rocks through heat, pressure, and chemical processes. Examples are given of buildings constructed from these different rock types, such as granite, limestone, slate, and marble.
