Every culture has an origin story that is important for defining its identity and shared values. While stories differ in details, they often explore common themes of where a people came from and where they are going. If you could pass down one story about yourself to future generations, what defining moment would you share and why? Myths typically use supernatural settings and characters to convey cultural lessons and values that unite a community.

Jungian Analysis of Terrorism
PSY 344: PSYCHOLOGY OF
TERRORISM
Carl Jung
• Psychiatrist that advanced
the idea of archetypes.
• Collective Unconscious:
– All cultures use archetypes
to build their stories without
communicating with one
another about them.
Carl Jung 1875-1961
• Kesswill, Switzerland
• Son of minister, maternal Grandfather minister
• Dominant childhood beliefs formed his theory
– Visions & Dreams were important-paranormal-
collective unconscious came from this
– Two different personalities-dual personality
• Child as he appeared to world-introvert
• Cultured gentleman

In addition to being a psychoanalyst
• Jung was an artist:
– He painted, drew and sculpted
– He designed and built a “Tower” for himself
• Jung was somewhat of a mystic:
– He thought that repressing one’s spiritual
calling would create psychological problems in
the individual.
Carl Jung
• Disagreed with Freud
– the sexual instinct is not the main factor in
personality
– the personality is not almost completely formed in
early childhood
Jung’s Analytic Psychology
Personality consists of three parts
– Ego
• the rational, largely conscious system of personality,
which operates according to the reality principle. Ego
- Still the arbiter between conscious and unconscious
but no longer the center of personality
– Personal unconscious
• All of the thoughts and experiences that are accessible to the
conscious, as well as repressed memories and impulses. Unacceptable
components of the Psyche
• Gender opposite components
• Complexes
– Collective unconscious
• contains the universal experiences of humankind
transmitted to each individual; not available to
conscious thought

Collective Unconscious
Certain psychic elements passed
from generation to generation
through unconscious channel
Universal archetypes-emotional
symbols-predispose us to react in
predictable ways to common
recurring stimuli.
– Transpersonal
– Derived from our ancestors to
continually repeating events
The Collective Unconscious
It contains archetypes,

Archetypes cause us to

Folklore and Myths
• As generations of people passed stories
down through both oral storytelling and
eventually the written word, archetypes
became clearly visible.
• The archetypes are characters that
represent patterns of behavior and even
stereotypes.
• They are characters that everyone can
recognize and understand.
• Archetypes are patterns that can be, and
are, copied.
• They are symbols or characters that appear
again and again in myths and literature.
• They survive because they portra.

Exposition: initial part of a story where readers are exposed to setting and characters.
Situation: event in the story which kicks the action forward and begs for an outcome.
Complication: difficulties faced by characters as they experience internal and external conflicts.
Climax: watershed moment when it becomes apparent that major conflicts will be resolved.
Resolution: (Denouement): tying up of the loose ends of the story.
B SUB-PLOTS: PLOTS BENEATH AND AROUND THE MAJOR PLOT.
Foreshadowing: hints and clues of plot.
Flashback: portion of a plot when a character relives a past experience.
Frame story: plot which begins in the present, quickly goes to the past for story, then returns.
Episodic plot: a large plot sequence that is made up of a series of minor plot sequences.
Plausibility: likelihood that certain events within a plot can occur.
Soap Opera: multiple stories told along the sequence and spaced to sustain continual interest.

D Physical (external) Setting: the time and place of a story, general and specific.

good decisions, you will be rewarded. There is a God that is in control
Existentialism: man is free to choose absent backdrops other than his own. If he feels it is right, then it is
right.
Naturalism: man is largely trapped, a cog in the impersonal machinery. He has no real way of
changing his circumstances.
Realism: eclectic view, but leaning toward the naturalistic position. Sometimes good things happen to
bad people, and sometimes bad things happen to good people. That is just the way it is.
F Other Tempers: Classicism: Man is free, but appears to be trapped due to conflicting codes.
Transcendentalism: Offshoot of romanticism, nature is a window to divine.
Nihilism: Fallout of either extreme existentialism or naturalism. Life is horrible and painful. It
lacks meaning.
4 CONFLICT (nature of the problems faced)
G Four Universal Conflicts: Person versus self

As a film director, I have always been awestruck by the magic of animation. Animation, a medium once considered solely for the amusement of children, has undergone a significant transformation over the years. Its evolution from a rudimentary form of entertainment to a sophisticated form of storytelling has stirred my creativity and expanded my vision, offering limitless possibilities in the realm of cinematic storytelling.
Throughout the discussion, it is important to continue to connect this discussion with the students’ prior knowledge. For example, every culture has a creation story or tales of superhero characters (Jesus) that connect people with a sense of the divine.
Myth? – Most students are going to associate this with Greek mythology, but every culture has their own set of myths. Since myths are mostly creation stories, they are going to take place in a primordial place, in the earliest stages of life. Because they are other worldly (or new worldly, depending on your perspective) the characters are going to be gods and godlike. These characters serve as the elemental foundations for archetypes Generally the purpose of a myth is multi-faceted: they serve to tell an approved story (by some cultural leader) about common ties; they create a sense of belonging, or togetherness; they teach a lesson (one that everyone can understand) – in this way people have figures after whom they can model their behavior; they give people a sense of the divine
Answers: 4 6 1 2 7 5 3
If students didn’t get all of the previous questions correctly, they got the majority. This demonstrates the power of myth and how pervasive it is throughout the culture. Archetypes Out of the study of myth emerged the study of archetypes, this Jungian belief that there is a collective consciousness that exists, and certain universal characters, places or themes that trigger very powerful, visceral reactions. Reactions that the majority of people, regardless of culture, will all have. People will universally respond positively to the hero, and negatively to the villian. They will go “Awww” when they see a baby and cringe when they see an accident. You can always write a story about a hero’s journey or a rite of passage. Because one of the primary functions of myth is to provide a vehicle with which to tell a culture how to act (or conversely how not to act), it is important the we are able to recognize the lessons instinctively. Consider the previous list, how was it that the students where able to identify the characters without any detail instruction? It is because those characters have appeared in every story they’ve heard since birth. And so it is with archetypes. They are present in every story, movie, etc.
