This document discusses several narrative theorists and their contributions to understanding narratives. Vladimir Propp analyzed Russian fairy tales and identified character types and their common roles/functions. Tzvetan Todorov proposed that most narratives follow a pattern of equilibrium, disruption of equilibrium, and return to a new equilibrium. Roland Barthes identified five codes that help audiences make sense of narratives: action, enigma, symbolic, semic, and cultural. Levi Strauss examined how stories unconsciously reflect a culture's values and beliefs through binary oppositions. The document provides examples of each theorist's work to analyze narratives.
