The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) was established in 1994 as an autonomous body under the University Grants Commission of India to assess and accredit higher education institutions. It was created based on recommendations from the National Policy on Education to address deteriorating quality in higher education. NAAC functions through a General Council and Executive Committee comprised of educational administrators and policymakers. Its aims include assessing institutions, contributing to national development, fostering global competencies in students, and promoting excellence. It grades institutions on a scale from A++ to D based on criteria like research, extension activities, instructional responsibilities and consultancy.
