Vladimir Propp was a Russian scholar who analyzed Russian folk tales and identified 7 character types that commonly appear in narratives. The 7 types are: 1) The hero who leads the narrative and is on a quest. 2) The villain who opposes the hero. 3) The donor who provides help to the hero. 4) The princess who is a love interest or reward. 5) The helper who aids the hero. 6) The princess' father who offers a reward. 7) The false hero who takes credit from the real hero. Propp concluded that most characters can be classified into these 7 types.
