Patient Autonomy And Health Care
Patient Autonomy in Health Care
Introduction
Nursing is an all encompassing profession in which practitioners are not only proficient in technical medical functionality, they
also have the obligation to remain compassionate and respectful of patients and as such are expected to adhere to pre
established codes of ethics. Of these ethics, autonomy is of extreme importance as it offers patients a sense of personal
authority during a time where they may feel as if their lives, or at the very least their health, is no longer under their control.
Autonomy in the context of nursing allocates the patient and often their family with the final word on the course of treatment.
The concept of patient autonomy is a highly variable subject in all fields of health care. It is a universal concept that varies
widely in its meaning and interpretation. Autonomy in its simplest form can be defined as a state of independence or self
governing (Atkins, 2006). Patient autonomy can also be defined as the ability to make once own decisions, based on one s
sound judgment. It is defined by the American Nurses Association (ANA, 2011) as the agreement to respect another s right to
self determine a course of action; support of independent decision making. This seemingly straight forward ethical concept is
rife with difficulties when one considers potential disagreements that may arise even when informed consent is provided,
particularly among children or vulnerable people. Relevant research and

Winged Me Narrative
The scent of salt water tickles my nose as I enter the small town of Kiros. I smile, it s good to revisit the town I grew up in. I
ve been living in the ... unique servants corridors of the Swinfield Manor. However, weeks ago I left and I hope never to
return. My town has a humble population but today the place is mobbed with people. They ve all come for the festival, but I
have come for different reason. To meet the woman with the wings, to kill the woman who ended my father. I ve been planning
her death for weeks and I know I ll enjoy the satisfaction of killing the one who cursed me and ripped my life into thousands of
tiny shreds. The crisp, sweet scented air pushes my auburn hair into my eyes as I make my way to the crumbling alleys and ...

So, as she flys forward to attack once more, I throw my hands up creating spikes of darkness. The darkness pushes through the
light solidifying around me. The Winged One has no time to stop or slow so she flies forward to the spikes protecting. One of
them stabs straight through her left wing. The woman lets out a bloodcurdling cry then is as limp as a rag doll.
After the staff of darkness skewers her wing I release it and the darkness dissipates. The one that has wings falls to the ground
with a sickening thunk and doesn t rise.
Adrenaline courses through me as I cautiously move towards her. Her body lies limp and lifeless. A pool of grey red blood
darkness the ground around her. I nudge her gently with my foot. Are you dead? I whisper. No answer. I flip her over with my
boot and find that her chest isn t rising and falling. She isn t breathing. She is dead.
A mixture of emotions roar inside me. Joy that the witch is finally dead. The one who killed my father is finally gone. Then ...
sadness. I killed a person I don t even know the name of. I killed someone. This is the first person I ve ever killed. I just hope I

The Theme Of Indecision In Hamlet By William Shakespeare
To be or not be that is the question. That is the question Hamlet is tormented by throughout the play Hamlet by William
Shakespeare. Should I live? Should I die? Should I take revenge for my father s death? These are all the internal struggles
Hamlet is trying to combat within himself. Also, Hamlet tends to have a conflict with every member of the play. His indecision
is followed by his inaction. The reason for this struggle with indecision can be based on many factors life presents for Hamlet.
At the beginning of the play, Hamlet spoke to a ghost which was his father, the dead king. The king confessed that Claudius,
the king s brother that is now married to Hamlet s mother, killed him. Hamlet s first soliloquy (1.2) reveal Hamlet s
melancholy towards his mother s actions, Why, she would hang on him as if increase of appetite had grown by what it fed on,
and yet, within a month let me not on t; frailty, thy name is woman . The use of this metaphor indicates Hamlet s anger towards
his mother for her lack of loyalty to his father. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Act 1, Scene 5, the initiation of this journey for revenge is demonstrated through the use of death imagery when Hamlet is
told, Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder . Hamlet devotes himself to avenging his father s death, but, because he is
thoughtful by nature, he delays, entering into a deep melancholy and even apparent madness. Hamlet embodies a deep sense of
self doubt, But I am pigeon livered, and lack gall to make oppression bitter or ere this (2.2). This metaphor is evidence that
Hamlet s thought process decreases the possibility of the accomplished task for his father resulting in

Anna Karenina: Comparative Analysis
Introduction
Anna Karenina is a 19th century novel written by Leo Tolstoy. The book narrates a story about family bonds, love and culture.
The tale focuses on two specific characters. These characters are Anna Karenina and Konstantin Levin. Anna is an urban
housewife married to a politician. Initially, she is the reasonable person since she acts as a mediator during the conflict faced
by the Oblonsky family whereby Anna s brother was unfaithful to her wife. She is able to reunite the couple, Stiva and Dolly,
even though there were issues based on infidelity. Nonetheless, Anna too succumbed to temptation and fell in love with a
soldier called Vronsky, yet, she was a married woman. Their lustful relationship continues until Anna s husband discovers her
deceit. Anna asks for a divorce but she is not granted at first. Finally, when her husband gives her the choice of divorcing him,
she does not and moves to a different country with her lover. Anna gives birth to a child and when she returns to her town, she
is shunned by society due to her illicit affair. On the other hand, Kitty, Dolly s sister, had her eye on Anna s lover. The feeling
was not mutual and she ended up marrying Levin, the suitor she had shunned in preference for Vronsky. Ultimately, the main
characters in the story find the true meaning of life.

Stanley George Miller Analysis
The visual cues, color, form depth, and movement are all displayed within the graphical painting by Stanley George Miller.
When looking at the painting you see the different color schemes. You have the black and white with the blues and greys and
also the red, yellow content. When describing the objective color within the painting, these colors can also project a mood on
the observer. The dark colors such as the women in the red dress with a black background portray darkness also the women
with the draping cloth covering her head and facial demeanor showing a sense of the deep thought. As you move to the center
of the painting you see the contrast of light and dark and the bright colors around the dark image. As you move to the right of
the painting the blues and greys lighten your mood of the objects being displayed. Also, you see the ocean waves and the blue
sky with two people embracing one another.

The painting displays diagonal, gestural, and directional lines; repetition; and placement of objects to give it an illusion of
motion (Lamp,n.d., para 12). If you take a look at the women and man embracing one another is a gestural movement of an
action among the two objects. The cloud and the funnel coming from the women hair is a diagonal line of movement. The
waves hitting and crashing into the land and then going back out to the sea gives you directional and repetition of these
objects.
This painting intrigues me because I was trying to see what the artist was trying to convey to the viewer. This style of art is
part of the new the age of information and the Art Noveau and pop art of the later part of the 20th century (Mousestudios, n.d).
The images of the people on the canvas display a sense of wonder. The couple is looking off to the future and the women on

Hispanics but i the end relies on their vote, because they have a lot of potential power in determining their states electoral

they make up about 42% of the population, although they could set the stage for battle in many states such as, Arizona, Nevada

At the time of the article the Hispanics as a whole were considered undecided in who they were going to vote for. The

Hezekiah And The Assassination Of Sennacherib King Of Jordan
By 704 BC, Hezekiah s opportunity came. The assassination of Sargon II, lead to Sennacherib becoming the leader in Assyria.
Under his leadership, he attempted to hold the Empire together. Due to Hezekiah wanting to relinquish his tides with Assyria,
he withheld tribute. This was an open signal of rebellion. Other states in the area joined the rebellion and Hezekiah, in
brokering an alliance with Egypt over the objections of Isaiah became the leader of the revolt. It took Sennacherib until 701
BC to quiet the other provinces sufficiently to turn his attention to Hezekiah. However, the Bible records an invasion of
Sennacherib king of Assyria, in the 14th year of Hezekiah king of Judah. Assyrian records also give the account of the invasion

`` Pride `` By John Aquinas
When one hears the word pride , one would rarely imagine a modest person who devotes their time to volunteer work and
philanthropy. Typically, one would picture an arrogant politician or a movie star, a person so self absorbed that they almost
entirely ignore the needs of those around them. However, even the humblest acts of virtue can arise from pride as well. The
story of Icarus, the boy who became entranced with his own pride and flew too close to the sun, is told time and time again;
however, there is another story of pride one hears less often, the person who takes pride in their own humility. Rather than take
pride in typical attributes such as wealth, prestige, or even appearance, these people take pride in their modesty and virtue. In
this way, pride comes from an unexpected source and is difficult to avoid since it takes occasion even from good deeds
(Aquinas 7). While the other six deadly sins present both helpful and harmful characteristics of the sin, pride is complex in
corrupting even the most well intentioned actions. At first, it would seem that humility would be the opposite of pride since it
is defined as, having a lowly opinion of oneself ( Humility ). However, there are also occasions in which a person corrupts the
virtue by using it to enhance their image and view it as an example of their own excellence. For example, although most of
those volunteering at the soup kitchen want to improve their community or provide to those less fortunate, there

to retreat into the background but instead were given the power to declare war and to regulate trade. Furthermore, over the
years, the inclination of congress to make vast allotments to presidents have been even more noticeable in the area of foreign
policy than in domestic policy. In foreign affairs, it has typically been viewed that presidents have benefited from the
uncertainty of the governing structure by affirming power not openly granted to them and to implement their policy agendas in
whatever ways they find possible. The Power of Veto The power of the veto granted to the executive branch is one of the few

The advancement of technology has created new investigative tools for law enforcement but these advancements have
corresponded with constitutionality challenges under the fourth amendment. The use of drones as as investigative tool can
provide benefits to law enforcement however, the use of drones can lead to privacy concerns which need to be addressed as
well. The use of devices for the benefit of law enforcement must be examined in regard to both the efficiency and efficacy of
law enforcement techniques as well as the privacy rights of those citizens in which the government wishes to monitor.
According to the Fourth Amendment, people are provided the right to be secure of their persons, houses, papers and effects,
against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause.
Furthermore, the amendment forbids the government from conducting unreasonable searches and seizures which could allow
citizens to pursue lawsuits against those involved with unlawful searches. This leaves the question as to whether reliance on
technology can render a search or seizure unreasonable such through the use of drone surveillance. Drones are aircraft which
function without the presence of individuals within the aircraft and instead function remotely or independently varying in size
from a vessel as small as insect to the size of a commercial airplane. Furthermore, drones are equipped with high powered
cameras, thermal scanners, license plate readers, moving target indicators, LADAR, LIDAR and facial recognition software.
The use of drones provides a great benefit when used in areas such as mapping, environmental protection, delivering packages
and rescue missions, however, their benefit

The House On Mango Street Identity Essay
Identity
You will always be Esperanza. You will always be Mango Street. You can t erase what you know. You can t forget who you are
(41). In the coming of age novel, The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, Identity is portrayed through how one girl
struggles to find herself. The main character Esperanza is struggling to fit in. She feels like the odd one out due to her race,
gender, and the environment she lives in. Race is a big factor in the book especially because at this time there was a lot of
racial discrimination. All brown all around, we are safe. But watch us drive into a neighborhood of another color and our knees
go shakity shake and our car windows get rolled up tight and our eyes look straight (28). Esperanza makes fun of white people
who are frightened by her neighborhood but as soon as she enters one of the opposite race, she gets uncomfortable as well. She
also feels defined by her name. In English my name means hope. In Spanish it means to many letters. It means sadness, it
means waiting. It is like the number nine. A muddy color. It is the mexican records my father plays on Sunday mornings when
he is shaving, songs like sobbing (10). Esperanza ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Does Goya Design Transcend Into Modern Caricature And...
Baudelaire once said, Caricatures are often the most faithful mirror of life. The art of caricature was established into print in
eighteenth century England as a form of commentary on the current events of the time. Caricature as a style itself is a
combination of two separate social inventions. Caricature Adopting the Italian invention of caricatura the graphic exaggeration
of facial and bodily features for comic effect and combining it with an updated repertoire of visual metaphor, personification,
and allegorical attributes. Though born in England, the story about to be told in this paper is one of Spanish origin, a story
about Francisco Goya. This paper will discuss how Goya implemented painting, drawing, and printing technique to stimulate
social critique of and satirize the subjects of his works. Then how does Goya s methodology transcend into modern caricature
and social critique?
Before one can talk about his prints, one must understand who Francisco Goya is as an artist. Goya was a Spanish romantic
painter and printmaker of late 18th and early 19th centuries and throughout his long career was an important commentator and
chronicler of his era. Goya produced a great number of works in a variety of media in his lifetime. He did religious subjects in
painted frescos and portraits, he then also depicted life in Spain through aquatints, etchings, and lithographs . Gautier

Application Letter For Electronics And Communications...
I find resonance in the words of Nikola Tesla, If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy,
frequency and vibration . Change is what defined my childhood. My father is with the Indian Army and we moved to a new
city every two years. In India, where language, food and culture change every hundred miles, I completed my education in
several schools and under diverse settings. My curiosity to work in situations where nobody knows anything , and build up
everything from scratch led me to pursue Engineering. Since automation, digitization and convergence of technology are today
central to all streams of engineering, I decided to opt for Electronics and Communications Engineering for under graduation.
This stream enabled me to apply my knowledge to build different applications in any field, and the courses served in refining
my understanding about the subject making me keenly appreciative of the subtleties in this field. In college, inspired by
technology and motivated by social implications, I teamed up with couple of classmates on a project for quadriplegic paralysis
patients who are unable to use their limbs and are completely dependent for their mobility. The device was able to detect
precise head movement and transmit the signal to the wheelchair circuitry setting it in motion. We extended this system by

Prevention And Improvement Of Community Health
Merriam Webster defines Public Health as The art and science dealing with the protection and improvement of community
health by organized community effort and including preventive medicine and sanitary and social science (Merriam Webster).
Throughout recent history, factors that have seriously threatened human safety whether it be disease, genocide, pollutants, or
plague, have been identified as public health concerns by various governments and organizations. These situations are
remedied by creating a solution to correct the source of the problem. For example, finding the cure to a fatal disease or
shutting down factories that create environmental toxins. One of the most under recognized public health emergencies in the
United States is the violence caused by firearms, and the source of this violence is unregulated gun ownership. The high
percentage of gun ownership among American citizens and the amount of injury and death that is associated with it constitutes
a public health emergency in The United States of America, which constantly, consistently, and gravely endangers the
American people; this violence must be controlled. Like any other potential public health concern, the gun violence must be
qualified based on the level of deaths and injuries that occur as its direct result. The World Health Organization defines a
public health emergency as an occurrence or imminent threat of an illness or health condition, caused by bio terrorism,
epidemic or pandemic disease,

Race and Ethnicity in the United States Still Matters
Race and ethnicity is a main factor in the way we identify others and ourselves. The real question here is does race/ethnicity
still matter in the U.S.? For some groups race is not a factor that affects them greatly and for others it is a constant occurrence
in their mind. But how do people of mix race reacts to this concept, do they feel greatly affected by their race? This is the
question we will answer throughout the paper. I will first examine the battle of interracial relationship throughout history and

They had been taken away from their homes and forced to works as slaves. They often do not view themselves as part of the
American society and feel like outsiders. It seems that throughout history racial minorities have not been highly welcomed or
treated properly. Japanese interment camps are an example of this. But can the affect of a person historical background have an
affect on them today?
If a child had any form of black ancestry he would be considered black regardless if they were partly white. This was
considered the one drop rule. The child was not a pure white person therefore was treated as someone of color. Today we have
often forced multiracial groups to classify themselves as one race or as a category of other. It was not until recently that the

Evaluation Of Processed Meats And Other Types Of Cancer
In 2014, an International Advisory Committee convened and recommended the evaluation of processed and red meats by the
International Agency of Research on Cancer (IARC) Monographs Programme. This recommendation was prompted by studies
suggesting some sort of association between increases in cancer and processed in red meats. 22 experts from 10 countries,
reviewed 800 studies and confirmed the positive association of processed and red meats to various types of cancer. The IARC
classified red meat in the group 2A category as probably carcinogenic to humans, due to limited evidence. The IARC classified
processed meats in the Group 1 listing, along with tobacco smoking and asbestos, as carcinogenic to humans, due to sufficient
evidence. It has been proven that Red meats are categorized as beef, lamb, veal, pork, mutton, horse and goat (Simon, S.,
2015). Processed meats are meats that have been altered to enhance flavor or to improve preservation through processes such
as: salting, curing, fermentation, and smoking. Some examples of processed meats include but are not limited to bacon, ham
and sausage (Simon, S., 2015). Colorectal cancer has the highest incidence in association to red and processed meats, stomach,
pancreatic and prostate cancer have weaker associations. Colorectal Cancer (CRC), is the third most common cancer

The Theme Of Madness In Shakespeare, By William Shakespeare
Madness can be defined as the state of mental delusion/ mentally ill or showing extremely foolish/eccentric behavior which
begins with anger. The incorporation of madness in literature has been a long standing tradition and can be encountered in
these three works: King Lear by William Shakespeare where he tells the story about King Lear whose madness has been

King Lear slowly starts to descend in the complexity of insanity and his first sign of madness can be seen through this quote
...Look look, a mouse! Peace, peace; this piece of toasted cheese will do it...OH, well flown, bird! (Act IV.6. 88 91). Over time,
he starts to realize that he made himself fall into this trap and Regan and Goneril are the reason for his madness and lastly, he
learns to conquer his madness; however, it leads to a misfortune. On the other hand, Edgar, the son of Gloucester pretends to
be a madman and decides to live the life of a beggar due to Edmund evil intentions (Act 3, Scene 4). In this scenario, Edgar is
able to save and live his life better even if the world considers him insane. Edgar as a character symbolizes madness the most
in King Lear. His loss of identity as a noble can be seen as a form of madness. Obsession is a form of insanity that can be
discovered in Daddy by Sylvia Plath where the author shows hatred towards her own obsession with her dead father. With the
use of literary devices, she expresses her emotion towards the male figures in her life causes of her insanity. Plath faces
rejection from the society and from her family which leads to her insanity. An example of her cutting off from the society can
be seen in lines 69 70, The black telephone s off at the root, The voices just can t work through. Due to her obsession towards
her father, she tried to commit

Zeus In Frankenstein
As the leader of Mount Olympus, the gods, and the universe, Zeus was often looked up to as the shining example excellence in
Greek society. According to the people s beliefs, Zeus was a partial reason for their creation, as he gave the titan, Prometheus,
the task of creating man. Prometheus created man out of clay, yet the people looked up to Zeus for motivation and inspiration.
However, Zeus was not always a role model, committing adultery against his wife, Hera, and letting his anger get the best of
him in cases of lashing out against the people of Earth and the other gods. However, for the most part, the humans that he was
responsible for acted in a far more compassionate and caring manner towards one another, not reflective of the values ... Show

This can be seen when he says, Oh, Frankenstein! Generous and self devoted being! What does it avail that I now ask thee to
pardon me? I who irretrievably destroyed thee by destroying all thou lovest. Alas! He is cold, he cannot answer me (Shelley,
221). In the following pages, however, the monster admits to having shown a lack of compassion during the murders of Henry
Clerval and Victor s wife, Elizabeth. Even though the monster seems to be mindlessly killing people close to Victor, one can
argue that his rampage was based on humanity. Before the murders, the creature simply seeks a female companion from his
creator, to be able to, interchange of those sympathies necessary for [its] being (Shelley, 147). While Victor did initially
comply, he throws the idea out the window, and as a result, the monster experiences true heartbreak. This heartbreak leads the
monster to commit the crimes that it did, inflicting a fairly equal amount of pain upon Frankenstein compared to the suffering
inflicted on the monster. For example, Victor promotes the suffering by taking away the companion and creating the creature
in a wretched form. Furthermore, the monster is extremely young, so like a child crying over a bump on a table, Frankenstein s
creation is overreacting to a situation that he has never encountered before. He solely acts out of a long for humanity and
equality in the world he was forced into. This is seen on page 222, when Victor s monster says to Robert Walton, he sought his
own enjoyment in feelings and passions form the indulgence of which I was forever barred, then impotent envy and bitter
indignation filled me with an insatiable thirst for vengeance (Shelley,

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) is one of the largest food and nutrition assistance programs in the United States.

the federal guidelines. The basis of eligibility for free or reduced price meals can be determined one of three ways; categorical

The Causes And Cons Of Jewish Groups In Jesus
Jewish Groups 1 In Jesus time, there were many religious and social groups who opposed His teachings. When we read these
types of confrontations with Jesus we automatically envision these groups as evil people when in reality they weren t at all. In
this report, we will study and analyze the main religious groups that were present during Jesus era and why they might have
disagreed with Him. 2 The Pharisees were one group of people that had difficulties and problems with Jesus teachings. The
Pharisees were ultra Orthodox men who shunned the unrighteous and made up many rules on how to be holy. There were two
main groups of Pharisees the Shammai and the Hillel. The Shammai believed that only the Jews were loved by God and that
Gentiles shouldn t convert to Judaism. Because of this belief, the Shammai grew to hate the Gentiles and even made edicts so
that the two were separated. The Shammai is also known to have political ties and a close relation to the zealots who wanted to
overthrow Rome. The second and less influential groups of Pharisees were the Hillel which focused more on people as
opposed to rules. They were much more open to Gentile converts and Jesus acted more positively with this group than the
other. The potential conflicts of these groups would be when Jesus would heal someone on the Sabbath the Shammaiites would
see this as Jesus doing work on the Sabbath while the Hillelites would see this as a good deed which was permitted on the
Sabbath. Another point

Gs1140 Unit 1 Research Paper 1
Unit 1 Research Paper 1: Paradigm Shift
Introduction
In the past, virtual reality technology was thought of by many as a gimmick, and the hope for it to become a mainstream
technology was discarded as products did not work as how the public envisioned. However, the proper technology is now
available to make virtual reality just that: a reality. The entertainment industry is on the verge of a monumental paradigm shift
that will completely transform the way these entertainment mediums are experienced. The typical experience of video games is
one with a controller with joysticks that are used to control where the playable character is looking along with a monitor or
television screen in front of the player. Today, this scenario is so ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An incredible use outside of video games is military simulation training using these same technologies. Virtual Battlespace is a
simulation program developed by Bohemia Interactive Simulations and is used by the US Army and U.S. Marine Corps as well
as other armed forces across the globe, such as the UK Army, the French Air Force, and the Royal Navy.
Conclusions
Although this specific program will likely not become available to average consumers, the same foundations for the simulation
will be available on the marketplace while being affordable at the same time. In time, applied use of virtual reality such as the
Oculus Rift will become mainstream and accepted in everyday life not only due its entertainment value, but also due to its
affordability for consumers everywhere. Thoughts of virtual reality often resemble fantastical scenarios reminiscent of scenes
in movies with similar themes like Gamer, The Matrix, Total Recall, and Inception. After one delves into the VR technology in
products such as the Oculus Rift, one will begin to believe, and he or she will brace themselves for the tidal wave that is the
paradigm shift of virtual reality.

Princess Elizabeth Descartes Correspondence
In the Correspondence, Princess Elizabeth questions how the mind, which has no mass and no physical properties can
determine bodily spirits to perform voluntary actions (Page 217). She wants to know exactly how thoughts in a mind can
perform actions through a physical body and believes there is a problem with Descartes logic. Descartes starts out by saying
there are two facts about the human mind that all knowledge depends on: 1. it thinks and 2. by being united to the body it can
act and be acted upon. Descartes explains why he believes this reasoning by giving additional notions for the body, mind, and
the body and mind together. When referring to the body, Descartes says we only have the notion of extension, which entails the
notions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Descartes then goes on to explain the notion of heaviness and says that believes it has been misused when it is supposed as a
real quality, and that it was given to us for the purpose of regarding the way in which the soul moves the body. Princess
Elizabeth s then replies, and Descartes writes another letter back in order to answer more of her questions regarding the mind
body interaction and help her more understand his reasoning. He begins by saying that even though she may want to perceive
the soul as material (in order to understand its union with the body), she should still recognize that it is separate from the body.
He regards that if it is easier for Princess Elizabeth to attribute matter and extension to the soul than to attribute to it the
capacity to move a body and to be moved by one without having matter (Page 228), then she should do that, and then by doing
that eventually she will be able to comprehend and visualize the union of the body and soul that he mentioned in the first

Allegiant Air Financial Statement
Allegiant Air has had a financial successful story for what people would expect in the low cost carrier markets of today.
Allegiant is in its 45th consecutively profitable quarter which is excellent when you consider they were out of bankruptcy in
2001 which makes them continually profitable since 2003. The company has used strategies that avoid barriers imposed by
larger and more established carriers by using strategies such as using regional airports instead of major airports, using
terminals during off peak times, investments in fuel to curve prices, and assets that are low cost to own and operate. Revenue
was just short of a billion and were up 10% from 2012 (Annual Report, 2014).
Allegiants largest expense as reported by their 2013 Annual Report is undoubtedly fuel, costing 41.6% in 2012 and 38.7% in
2013 (Figure 1). Steps to circumvent fuel costs have included buying A319s which reduced fuel burn from 950 gallons per
hour on MD80s to 725 gallons per hour in addition to establishing contractual agreements with Orlando Sanford International
and affiliates and investments in fuel storage and transportation facilities. The second largest cost is salaries and benefits at

Summary Of Niebuhr s Moral Man And Immoral Society
It is human nature for individuals to act differently, and often immorally, when part of a larger group. In chapter 5 of Niebuhr s
Moral Man and Immoral Society, Niebuhr examines the attitudes of privileged classes as a group. Niebuhr is correct in his
argument that the economic standing of a group determines their ethical and social outlook. His argument that a group formed
from similar economic conditions will share similar perspectives of society is supported by the observations by Gilkey,
Nerburn, Plato and Kotlowitz. In chapter 5, Niebuhr explains how dominant groups characterize their morals, stating [t]he
moral attitudes of dominant and privileged groups are characterized by universal self deception and hypocrisy (Niebuhr 117).

Although Mrs. White knows that the housing solution is just, she can comfortably say no to giving up her space on the moral
grounds of protecting her son from bad influences. This justification of immorality by using reason supports Niebuhr s
argument that the privileged class will rationalize their immorality in order to keep their privileges. This idea is also seen in
Neither Wolf nor Dog by Kent Nerburn when Dan, a native American, discusses the colonization of America. Dan criticizes
the dominant white class and how they suppressed the Native American culture. He explains that [y]ou killed us by turning our
land into a piece of paper and bags of flour and blankets and telling us that was enough (Nerburn 50). The taking of their land
and oppression of Native Americans and their culture was morally justified with the exchange of land for food and household
items. These exchanges allowed the privileged class, white people, to justify the oppression that was taking place since they
convinced themselves that they had made a fair trade. The dominant class also believes that their special privileges are
compensation for doing important or useful jobs (Neibuhr 117). The privileged class believes that the lower classes cannot
perform the same functions due to lack of education or ability. This argument assumes that those in

Affirmative action in this time and place is a very hard area to keep in place when it comes to keeping jobs even at work for
the employees. Sometimes this type of equality in the working world can be good and sometimes it can be bad, but it depends
on how it is used that really makes how a person can feel when it comes to this type of treatment of employees no matter what

So to me that is not the right way to judge someone just because they are not the right sex for a job. There is one Bible verse
that I have found that kind of deals with affirmative action in places and that is Acts 6:13 which says, Now, in these days when
the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were
being neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, It is not right that
we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of
good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. (Holy Bible , NKJV) No employees, not
matter what color, sex, or race should be treated unfairly in a work place. It is not the fair thing and to me you should not have
to put any type of action in place to make people see what s right and wrong when it comes to hiring someone for a job in this
society today. I know there are people who do not treat others fairly, but they should have to be the ones who have to follow a
rule, and not the ones who are treating everyone equal.

Final Design For The Ball Sorting Device Essay
Final Design
Our final design for the ball sorting device is composed of 5 primary components: Ramp, separation device, dome, base, and
collection device.
Separation device:
The need for a separation device came to attention as interference between the balls on the ramp as well as the dome was
observed. To avoid interference there needed to be space between the balls. The separation device is a hollow, circular cylinder
with rods inserted horizontally (parallel to the radius and perpendicular to the height) from one side and out throughout the
other, but at different angles, with vertical spacing between the rods. This would basically function like a pegboard; As the
balls fall into the cylinder they will collide with the road and will fall onto either side of the rod, and continue falling until they
hit another rod. Each time they hit a rod there will be a ½ probability for the balls to tilt towards either side. A total of of rods
were inserted. A cardboard tube was used as the cylinder and chopsticks as the rods. The materials chosen were cheap,
lightweight, and strong enough. This introduces randomness in the system as well the slowing of the balls falling so that space
between the balls are created. The balls then enter the ramp.
Ramp:
The ramp is the source of energy for the balls. Energy here is in the form of gravity, as the start of the ramp is elevated to and it
provides potential energy using the formula, where m is the mass of the individual balls provided, h as

In an ironic twist, the scarecrows in the film are displaced from their normal role of protecting food, and are instead ruled by

is a picture of a limp but exceptionally happy scarecrow holding out his arms to support three crows, the ironic opposite of
defending against them as they usually would. In fact, this image is the first scene of the entire film, emphasizing the irony of
the picture itself and setting viewers up for the fact that the normal is abnormal throughout the film, even if not readily
apparent.

Free Trade Is A Policy
Free trade is a policy followed by some international markets in which countries governments do not restrict imports from, or
exports to, other countries. Free trade is exemplified by the European Economic Area and the North American Free Trade
Agreement, which have established open markets. Free trade is an economic policy under which the government does not
interfere with trade. No tariffs are applied to imports or exports, and people are allowed to trade goods and services as they
please. Supply and demand dictates the prices for which goods and services sell and are the only factors that determine how
resources are allocated in society. Under a free trade system, there are no trade barriers. There is free access to markets and
market information, and there are no government imposed monopolies. Those who support free trade believe that it allows
companies to come by raw materials and lower prices, which, in turn, results in lower prices on the open market. Supporters
also believe that the levels of employment in a nation are determined by the monetary policy of that nation and not the trade
policy. Thus, the free trade economy of the U.S. is not to blame for the increasing levels of unemployment. Many jobs are
leaving the nation, but supporters of the free trade debate argue that if companies could not outsource their labor to other
nations, they could just automate these processes anyway. Additionally, when people work for a profit and must compete, they

Human Needs In Kate Chopin s The Awakening
In class, literariness was defined as a piece of writing that has excellence of form and expressed a universal interest. This
means that the writing, as a whole, has to pertain to the everyday circumstances of ordinary people, and it must do so through a
meaningful narrative. The universal interests are synonymous with the basic needs of a human; Anthony Robbins, an American
author, philanthropist, and life coach, defines the basic human needs with six terms: contribution, certainty, growth, variety,
significance, and love. Throughout Kate Chopin s novella The Awakening, the main protagonist, Edna, experiences albeit at
differing levels all six of the basic needs. Thus, The Awakening qualifies as a piece of literary work because ... Show more

Edna only has limited certainty. She has security and safety, but lacks comfort she is not comfortable in her own skin. She is
forced to conform to society s assigned gender roles, and is frowned upon when she diverges from it: At a very early period
[Edna] had apprehended instinctively the dual life that outward existence which conforms, the inward life which questions
(18). Additionally, the caged parrot in the beginning of the story is symbolic of Edna s growing frustrations about her lack of
comfort. The parrot exclaims, Allez vous en! Sapristi!, (1) which translates to, Go away! For God s sake! These words are
directed at Léonce, representative of Edna voicing her anger at her husband because he trapped her in the cage of maternal
responsibilities that she wants to be freed from. Edna s need of certainty her search for comfort is partly the cause of her
demise in the end. The third basic human need is growth. This is signified by a sense of development both physically and
mentally. Everyone, toddler or adult, is continually growing. This is a universal interest because people instinctively want to
learn, and Edna is no different. Her progression through the novella is a, sort of, second adolescence. Adolescence is the period
in life when people begin to grow and individualize themselves, and it is no doubt that in The Awakening, Edna is trying to
grow her wings

The Use of Irony in Barbara L. Greenberg s The Faithful Wife
The Use of Irony in Barbara L. Greenberg s The Faithful Wife
The Faithful Wife by Barbara L. Greenberg is a fascinating, satirical account of what the speaker would do if she were
unfaithful to her husband. Upon the first reading of this poem, I thought the woman in this poem was saying that her husband
was irreplaceable and because of that she would never be unfaithful. Also I thought that if she did betray him, she would
choose someone totally different from him, which somehow wouldn t dishonor this great man. However, with repeated
reading, my opinion changed. Greenberg did an incredible job of revealing the truth of the situation. She used verbal irony to
explain how the wife in the poem is actually revealing the relationship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead, we would say something like We would eat at Howard Johnson s because you don t like it. This more formal
conversation and speaker s tone, which is condescending, suggests a detachment the wife feels toward her husband.
Greenberg is so clever with the use of verbal irony throughout the poem. The wife is really being sarcastic to her husband, in
an attempt to reveal her desires that are evidently ignored. The main line that triggered my understanding was, Not strong, not
proud, not just, not provident, my lover would blame me for his heart s distress, which you would never think to do (630).
Once again, I initially thought she was complimenting her husband and showing him great respect. This strong, proud, just and
provident man seemed perfect. However, the choice of words ...my lover would blame me for his heart s distress... is what
enlightened my thinking (630). The wife wanted to be so important to her husband that she would be the only thing that causes
him distress. She actually resents this prideful man who seems to make everything else more important that her.
There is even irony in the poem s title, The Faithful Wife. Yes, the speaker is a faithful wife, but because of duty not because of
the desires of her heart. The desires of her heart are all the things she says she and her lover would do. The message to her
husband is that he is doing the complete opposite of what she

  • 2. Patient Autonomy And Health Care Patient Autonomy in Health Care Introduction Nursing is an all encompassing profession in which practitioners are not only proficient in technical medical functionality, they also have the obligation to remain compassionate and respectful of patients and as such are expected to adhere to pre established codes of ethics. Of these ethics, autonomy is of extreme importance as it offers patients a sense of personal authority during a time where they may feel as if their lives, or at the very least their health, is no longer under their control. Autonomy in the context of nursing allocates the patient and often their family with the final word on the course of treatment. The concept of patient autonomy is a highly variable subject in all fields of health care. It is a universal concept that varies widely in its meaning and interpretation. Autonomy in its simplest form can be defined as a state of independence or self governing (Atkins, 2006). Patient autonomy can also be defined as the ability to make once own decisions, based on one s sound judgment. It is defined by the American Nurses Association (ANA, 2011) as the agreement to respect another s right to self determine a course of action; support of independent decision making. This seemingly straight forward ethical concept is rife with difficulties when one considers potential disagreements that may arise even when informed consent is provided, particularly among children or vulnerable people. I ve been living in the ... unique servants corridors of the Swinfield Manor. However, weeks ago I left and I hope never to return. My town has a humble population but today the place is mobbed with people. They ve all come for the festival, but I have come for different reason. To meet the woman with the wings, to kill the woman who ended my father. I ve been planning her death for weeks and I know I ll enjoy the satisfaction of killing the one who cursed me and ripped my life into thousands of tiny shreds. So, as she flys forward to attack once more, I throw my hands up creating spikes of darkness. The darkness pushes through the light solidifying around me. The Winged One has no time to stop or slow so she flies forward to the spikes protecting. One of them stabs straight through her left wing. The woman lets out a bloodcurdling cry then is as limp as a rag doll. After the staff of darkness skewers her wing I release it and the darkness dissipates. The one that has wings falls to the ground with a sickening thunk and doesn t rise. Adrenaline courses through me as I cautiously move towards her. Her body lies limp and lifeless. A pool of grey red blood darkness the ground around her. I nudge her gently with my foot. Are you dead? I whisper. No answer. I flip her over with my boot and find that her chest isn t rising and falling. She isn t breathing. She is dead. A mixture of emotions roar inside me. Joy that the witch is finally dead. • 4. The Theme Of Indecision In Hamlet By William Shakespeare To be or not be that is the question. That is the question Hamlet is tormented by throughout the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare. Should I live? Should I die? Should I take revenge for my father s death? These are all the internal struggles Hamlet is trying to combat within himself. Also, Hamlet tends to have a conflict with every member of the play. His indecision is followed by his inaction. The reason for this struggle with indecision can be based on many factors life presents for Hamlet. At the beginning of the play, Hamlet spoke to a ghost which was his father, the dead king. The king confessed that Claudius, the king s brother that is now married to Hamlet s mother, killed him. Hamlet s first soliloquy (1.2) reveal Hamlet s melancholy towards his mother s actions, Why, she would hang on him as if increase of appetite had grown by what it fed on, and yet, within a month let me not on t; frailty, thy name is woman . The use of this metaphor indicates Hamlet s anger towards his mother for her lack of loyalty to his father. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Act 1, Scene 5, the initiation of this journey for revenge is demonstrated through the use of death imagery when Hamlet is told, Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder . Hamlet devotes himself to avenging his father s death, but, because he is thoughtful by nature, he delays, entering into a deep melancholy and even apparent madness. Hamlet embodies a deep sense of self doubt, But I am pigeon livered, and lack gall to make oppression bitter or ere this (2.2). Anna is an urban housewife married to a politician. Initially, she is the reasonable person since she acts as a mediator during the conflict faced by the Oblonsky family whereby Anna s brother was unfaithful to her wife. Nonetheless, Anna too succumbed to temptation and fell in love with a soldier called Vronsky, yet, she was a married woman. When looking at the painting you see the different color schemes. You have the black and white with the blues and greys and also the red, yellow content. When describing the objective color within the painting, these colors can also project a mood on the observer. The dark colors such as the women in the red dress with a black background portray darkness also the women with the draping cloth covering her head and facial demeanor showing a sense of the deep thought. As you move to the center of the painting you see the contrast of light and dark and the bright colors around the dark image. As you move to the right of the painting the blues and greys lighten your mood of the objects being displayed. Also, you see the ocean waves and the blue sky with two people embracing one another. The painting displays diagonal, gestural, and directional lines; repetition; and placement of objects to give it an illusion of motion (Lamp,n.d., para 12). If you take a look at the women and man embracing one another is a gestural movement of an action among the two objects. The cloud and the funnel coming from the women hair is a diagonal line of movement. The waves hitting and crashing into the land and then going back out to the sea gives you directional and repetition of these objects. This painting intrigues me because I was trying to see what the artist was trying to convey to the viewer. This style of art is part of the new the age of information and the Art Noveau and pop art of the later part of the 20th century (Mousestudios, n.d). The images of the people on the canvas display a sense of wonder. • 9. `` Pride `` By John Aquinas When one hears the word pride , one would rarely imagine a modest person who devotes their time to volunteer work and philanthropy. Typically, one would picture an arrogant politician or a movie star, a person so self absorbed that they almost entirely ignore the needs of those around them. However, even the humblest acts of virtue can arise from pride as well. The story of Icarus, the boy who became entranced with his own pride and flew too close to the sun, is told time and time again; however, there is another story of pride one hears less often, the person who takes pride in their own humility. Rather than take pride in typical attributes such as wealth, prestige, or even appearance, these people take pride in their modesty and virtue. In this way, pride comes from an unexpected source and is difficult to avoid since it takes occasion even from good deeds (Aquinas 7). While the other six deadly sins present both helpful and harmful characteristics of the sin, pride is complex in corrupting even the most well intentioned actions. At first, it would seem that humility would be the opposite of pride since it is defined as, having a lowly opinion of oneself ( Humility ). However, there are also occasions in which a person corrupts the virtue by using it to enhance their image and view it as an example of their own excellence. For example, although most of those volunteering at the soup kitchen want to improve their community or provide to those less fortunate, there ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The high percentage of gun ownership among American citizens and the amount of injury and death that is associated with it constitutes a public health emergency in The United States of America, which constantly, consistently, and gravely endangers the American people; this violence must be controlled. In the following pages, however, the monster admits to having shown a lack of compassion during the murders of Henry Clerval and Victor s wife, Elizabeth. For example, Victor promotes the suffering by taking away the companion and creating the creature in a wretched form. Furthermore, the monster is extremely young, so like a child crying over a bump on a table, Frankenstein s creation is overreacting to a situation that he has never encountered before. Princess Elizabeth Descartes Correspondence In the Correspondence, Princess Elizabeth questions how the mind, which has no mass and no physical properties can determine bodily spirits to perform voluntary actions (Page 217). She wants to know exactly how thoughts in a mind can perform actions through a physical body and believes there is a problem with Descartes logic. Descartes starts out by saying there are two facts about the human mind that all knowledge depends on: 1. it thinks and 2. by being united to the body it can act and be acted upon. Descartes explains why he believes this reasoning by giving additional notions for the body, mind, and the body and mind together. When referring to the body, Descartes says we only have the notion of extension, which entails the notions ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Descartes then goes on to explain the notion of heaviness and says that believes it has been misused when it is supposed as a real quality, and that it was given to us for the purpose of regarding the way in which the soul moves the body. Princess Elizabeth s then replies, and Descartes writes another letter back in order to answer more of her questions regarding the mind body interaction and help her more understand his reasoning. He begins by saying that even though she may want to perceive the soul as material (in order to understand its union with the body), she should still recognize that it is separate from the body. He regards that if it is easier for Princess Elizabeth to attribute matter and extension to the soul than to attribute to it the capacity to move a body and to be moved by one without having matter (Page 228), then she should do that, and then by doing that eventually she will be able to comprehend and visualize the union of the body and soul that he mentioned in the first ... Allegiant is in its 45th consecutively profitable quarter which is excellent when you consider they were out of bankruptcy in 2001 which makes them continually profitable since 2003. The company has used strategies that avoid barriers imposed by larger and more established carriers by using strategies such as using regional airports instead of major airports, using terminals during off peak times, investments in fuel to curve prices, and assets that are low cost to own and operate. Revenue was just short of a billion and were up 10% from 2012 (Annual Report, 2014). Allegiants largest expense as reported by their 2013 Annual Report is undoubtedly fuel, costing 41.6% in 2012 and 38.7% in 2013 (Figure 1). Steps to circumvent fuel costs have included buying A319s which reduced fuel burn from 950 gallons per hour on MD80s to 725 gallons per hour in addition to establishing contractual agreements with Orlando Sanford International and affiliates and investments in fuel storage and transportation facilities. • 33. Summary Of Niebuhr s Moral Man And Immoral Society It is human nature for individuals to act differently, and often immorally, when part of a larger group. In chapter 5 of Niebuhr s Moral Man and Immoral Society, Niebuhr examines the attitudes of privileged classes as a group. Niebuhr is correct in his argument that the economic standing of a group determines their ethical and social outlook. His argument that a group formed from similar economic conditions will share similar perspectives of society is supported by the observations by Gilkey, Nerburn, Plato and Kotlowitz. In chapter 5, Niebuhr explains how dominant groups characterize their morals, stating [t]he moral attitudes of dominant and privileged groups are characterized by universal self deception and hypocrisy (Niebuhr 117). ... Although Mrs. White knows that the housing solution is just, she can comfortably say no to giving up her space on the moral grounds of protecting her son from bad influences. This justification of immorality by using reason supports Niebuhr s argument that the privileged class will rationalize their immorality in order to keep their privileges. This idea is also seen in Neither Wolf nor Dog by Kent Nerburn when Dan, a native American, discusses the colonization of America. Dan criticizes the dominant white class and how they suppressed the Native American culture. He explains that [y]ou killed us by turning our land into a piece of paper and bags of flour and blankets and telling us that was enough (Nerburn 50). The taking of their land and oppression of Native Americans and their culture was morally justified with the exchange of land for food and household items. These exchanges allowed the privileged class, white people, to justify the oppression that was taking place since they convinced themselves that they had made a fair trade. The dominant class also believes that their special privileges are compensation for doing important or useful jobs (Neibuhr 117). The privileged class believes that the lower classes cannot perform the same functions due to lack of education or ability. This argument assumes that those in ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Affirmative Action in the Workplace Affirmative Action in the Workplace Negative and Positive Rebecca Mikell Human Resources BUS362 Affirmative action in this time and place is a very hard area to keep in place when it comes to keeping jobs even at work for the employees. Sometimes this type of equality in the working world can be good and sometimes it can be bad, but it depends on how it is used that really makes how a person can feel when it comes to this type of treatment of employees no matter what color or sex a person is during this time period. There is one Bible verse that I have found that kind of deals with affirmative action in places and that is Acts 6:13 which says, Now, in these days when the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint by the Hellenists arose against the Hebrews because their widows were being neglected in the daily distribution. And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. (Holy Bible , NKJV) No employees, not matter what color, sex, or race should be treated unfairly in a work place. It is not the fair thing and to me you should not have to put any type of action in place to make people see what s right and wrong when it comes to hiring someone for a job in this society today. I know there are people who do not treat others fairly, but they should have to be the ones who have to follow a rule, and not the ones who are treating everyone equal. • 35. Final Design For The Ball Sorting Device Essay Final Design Our final design for the ball sorting device is composed of 5 primary components: Ramp, separation device, dome, base, and collection device. Separation device: The need for a separation device came to attention as interference between the balls on the ramp as well as the dome was observed. To avoid interference there needed to be space between the balls. The separation device is a hollow, circular cylinder with rods inserted horizontally (parallel to the radius and perpendicular to the height) from one side and out throughout the other, but at different angles, with vertical spacing between the rods. This would basically function like a pegboard; As the balls fall into the cylinder they will collide with the road and will fall onto either side of the rod, and continue falling until they hit another rod. Each time they hit a rod there will be a ½ probability for the balls to tilt towards either side. A total of of rods were inserted. A cardboard tube was used as the cylinder and chopsticks as the rods. The materials chosen were cheap, lightweight, and strong enough. This introduces randomness in the system as well the slowing of the balls falling so that space between the balls are created. The balls then enter the ramp. Ramp: The ramp is the source of energy for the balls. Energy here is in the form of gravity, as the start of the ramp is elevated to and it provides potential energy using the formula, where m is the mass of the individual balls provided, h as ... • 38. Free Trade Is A Policy Free trade is a policy followed by some international markets in which countries governments do not restrict imports from, or exports to, other countries. Free trade is exemplified by the European Economic Area and the North American Free Trade Agreement, which have established open markets. Free trade is an economic policy under which the government does not interfere with trade. No tariffs are applied to imports or exports, and people are allowed to trade goods and services as they please. Supply and demand dictates the prices for which goods and services sell and are the only factors that determine how resources are allocated in society. Under a free trade system, there are no trade barriers. There is free access to markets and market information, and there are no government imposed monopolies. Those who support free trade believe that it allows companies to come by raw materials and lower prices, which, in turn, results in lower prices on the open market. Supporters also believe that the levels of employment in a nation are determined by the monetary policy of that nation and not the trade policy. Thus, the free trade economy of the U.S. is not to blame for the increasing levels of unemployment. Many jobs are leaving the nation, but supporters of the free trade debate argue that if companies could not outsource their labor to other nations, they could just automate these processes anyway. • 40. Human Needs In Kate Chopin s The Awakening In class, literariness was defined as a piece of writing that has excellence of form and expressed a universal interest. This means that the writing, as a whole, has to pertain to the everyday circumstances of ordinary people, and it must do so through a meaningful narrative. The universal interests are synonymous with the basic needs of a human; Anthony Robbins, an American author, philanthropist, and life coach, defines the basic human needs with six terms: contribution, certainty, growth, variety, significance, and love. Throughout Kate Chopin s novella The Awakening, the main protagonist, Edna, experiences albeit at differing levels all six of the basic needs. Thus, The Awakening qualifies as a piece of literary work because ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Edna only has limited certainty. She has security and safety, but lacks comfort she is not comfortable in her own skin. She is forced to conform to society s assigned gender roles, and is frowned upon when she diverges from it: At a very early period [Edna] had apprehended instinctively the dual life that outward existence which conforms, the inward life which questions (18). Additionally, the caged parrot in the beginning of the story is symbolic of Edna s growing frustrations about her lack of comfort. The parrot exclaims, Allez vous en! Sapristi!, (1) which translates to, Go away! For God s sake! These words are directed at Léonce, representative of Edna voicing her anger at her husband because he trapped her in the cage of maternal responsibilities that she wants to be freed from. Edna s need of certainty her search for comfort is partly the cause of her demise in the end. The third basic human need is growth. This is signified by a sense of development both physically and mentally. Everyone, toddler or adult, is continually growing. This is a universal interest because people instinctively want to learn, and Edna is no different. Her progression through the novella is a, sort of, second adolescence. Adolescence is the period in life when people begin to grow and individualize themselves, and it is no doubt that in The Awakening, Edna is trying to grow her wings ... Greenberg is a fascinating, satirical account of what the speaker would do if she were unfaithful to her husband. Upon the first reading of this poem, I thought the woman in this poem was saying that her husband was irreplaceable and because of that she would never be unfaithful. Also I thought that if she did betray him, she would choose someone totally different from him, which somehow wouldn t dishonor this great man. However, with repeated reading, my opinion changed. Greenberg did an incredible job of revealing the truth of the situation. She used verbal irony to explain how the wife in the poem is actually revealing the relationship ... This more formal conversation and speaker s tone, which is condescending, suggests a detachment the wife feels toward her husband. Greenberg is so clever with the use of verbal irony throughout the poem. The wife is really being sarcastic to her husband, in an attempt to reveal her desires that are evidently ignored. The main line that triggered my understanding was, Not strong, not proud, not just, not provident, my lover would blame me for his heart s distress, which you would never think to do (630). Once again, I initially thought she was complimenting her husband and showing him great respect. This strong, proud, just and provident man seemed perfect. However, the choice of words ...my lover would blame me for his heart s distress... is what enlightened my thinking (630). The wife wanted to be so important to her husband that she would be the only thing that causes him distress. She actually resents this prideful man who seems to make everything else more important that her. There is even irony in the poem s title, The Faithful Wife. Yes, the speaker is a faithful wife, but because of duty not because of the desires of her heart. The desires of her heart are all the things she says she and her lover would do.
