3. INTRODUCTION
• Nursing Association of Nepal (NAN)
is an only one professional
organisation of the nurses in Nepal.
• It is a non-political non-sectoral
organization not influenced by class
creed, race and religion.
4. BACK GROUND
• The establishment of NAN was
initiated by technical experts from
WHO Ms DM Ross, Ms Manning and
Mrs Lamu Amatya.
• In 1950s,Nursing education had just
started in the Nepal.

• They felt the need of nursing association
for professional growth, development and
for the establishment of standards for
nursing service.
• In 1958, a group of 18 nurses were
conducted the first meeting to discuss for
the formulation of nursing association in
Nepal. They worked up to 1959 AD

• In 1960, with help of Ms Ross, 33
Nurses drafted a constitution for
registration process.
• In BS 2018 Magh 15 (Jan 1962 A.D )
NAN was officially registered in
Kathmandu as Trained Nurses
Association of Nepal (TNAN) .

• It became a member of International
Council of Nurses (ICN) Geneva in 1969
A.D.
• By the 3rd ammendment of its constitution
on 2048 B.S, the name of the association
is changed and the organization shall be
called as "Nepal Nursing Sangh" in Nepali
and "Nursing Association of Nepal" in
English and abbreviated as NAN.

• The organization is run by executive
board, which is formed by nationwide
election of secret ballot every 3 years.
• Mrs Lamu Amatya was the first
President of NAN, a royal nurse and
working in school of nursing at
surendra bhawan and expatriate Ms
Ross as vice President.

professional organizations related to nursing profession and
exchange ideas with each other.

eg- organizing seminars, workshop, meetings
talk programme, discussion and research work

health related booklets, pamphlets, bulletin, other
information materials and exhibition.

8 Extent cooperative to avil preventive, primitive, curative, and
restorative health services in a simple accessible and organized

agencies to develop partnership to strengthen nursing and

2 Establish and maintain a code of ethics among nurses in Nepal.
3 Service as a official representative of Nepalese nurses in the ICN.

6 Lunching of different health programs such as workshop, seminars
etc.

18. MEMBERSHIP
Any professional nurse graduates from the school and certified by the
nursing council could be a full member of NAN.
There is provision of annual and life membership and is also guest
Membership,honory membership to an individual and institution with
Definite cash donation to NAN.
19. STRUCTURE OF
ASSOCIATION
UNIT COMITTEE
Any health institution can form a unit committee of NAN with 9 to 11
Members.the period of the unit committee will be tenure of 2yrs.
DISTRICT COMITTEE
Each district in the country can have a district committee of NAN with
The position of president – 1,vice president – 1, secretory – 1,
treasure – 1 and members 5-7.
CENTRAL COMITTEE
There will be 21 members in the central committee as an executive
board with the position of president – 1, senior vice president – 1
Vice president – 5, general secretory – 1, secretory – 1, treasure – 1,
Member – 5.
20. SUB COMITTEE
Each sub committee will consist of one co-ordinator and 4-8 members
