investigator who lives with his wife who is diabetic in the movie Memento. This
movie depicts a life that some may live every day; a life that struggles to remember
certain aspects of it. In this psychological thriller, the disorder presented through the
main character Leonard is called Anterograde Amnesia, better known as short term
memory. This is a disorder in which short term memories are often forgotten long
before they ever have the ability to become long term memories. This is caused by
the brain being affected by some sort of trauma or accident that affects the
hippocampusof the brain making it very hard from that point on to remember
anything other than the long term memories that were set in your brain before any

China has had a one child policy since 1980. The one child policy limits the
fertility rate that each woman can have only one child in efforts to cut down the
population, and undo what Mao Zedong did to early China. Mao s goal was to
make China the next superpower nation by encouraging people to have many
children. Unfortunately, Mao did not know that he was moving China backwards
with this kind of thinking. In 1949 after a long civil war over who controlled
China, Mao Zedong took control of the newly communist country. Mao wanted
China to become a bigger country with a stronger economy so he encouraged people
to have more and more children. At the same time, Mao wanted more people to work
in the factories and move to the cities. Many problems occurred in this process
because too many people moved to the cities and there wasn t enough farmers for
their new growing population and economy. Unfortunately, a huge famineoccurred,

United States southeast region can be described as unique when it comes to its
economic system and its social structure due to the multiple political and
constitutional problems these structures have created. The most important factor of
these problems raised could be said that was the social structure, regarding the
interaction between the different social groups of this southeastern community. From
the conflicts that aroused between the different White European settlers, to the
adjustment of the African Americans to labor, the southerner society, or community,
was created. The commodification of the domestic work of African Americanwomen
affected in great ways their performance in white households, as well as their
portrayal in advertisements, where they were shown to be a need to white
southerners during the 1920 s. Although these advertisements approached the public
with the idea that domestic work was a necessity, the advances in society made of
their work one that day by day became less needed.
The problems of race the United States confronted are deeply imbedded in the
historical past of the nation. Due to the fact that a great majority of the nation s
African Americans lived in former slave states, white southerners constantly came up
new ways to impose white supremacy on their black neighbors. Consequently, black
southerners fought back against unequal treatment, discrimination, and the violent

DRAMA AND THEMES
Drama by definition is a play, movie, television show, or radio show that is about a
serious subject and is not meant to make the audience laugh (Webster). Race,
social class, and gender very often are major story lines for films in the category of
drama. A drama can be based on several aspects, including but not limited to reality
and novels and cross over into several other genres of movies. Very often, we see
drama crossed with comedy, action, romance, etc., in turn making it the most
common genre of movies (Dirks, 2015). Drama focuses on realistic characters with a
realistic story line, high intensity special effects are not usually prevalent in dramas.
The Help, A Christmas Carol, Mr. Mom, are the dramas chosen that I feel depict race,
social class, and gender representation each at a very different level, based on the
time period implied in the movie.
COMMONALITIES AND CHOSEN ISSUES
If I am going to see a movie based on a novel I have read, for example, The Help, I
have a preconceived notion of what this movie is going to be about and
expectations based on the previews prior to entering the movie theater. An
additional spin on this movie, which often makes the actors and directors work
more difficult, the book became popular prior to the movie being created. Very

As a native born African Ghanaian, I have lived in an underserved community in
Ghana where there is a disproportionate burden of disease, so I understand the role of
socioeconomic status and behavior as determinants of health. This inspires me to
pursue a career in public health where I can help to control epidemics in Africa and
