The Insanity Defense By Steven Steinberg
While reading chapter 2 of The Insanity Defense we discussed many different versions of the
insanity defense and whether or not they re valid or not. This interested me so much that I
decided to actually go online and research the most insane ways to use the insanity defense.
Within this research I found various cases where it was used and was so shocked at how bizarre
almost all of them are that I decided to write a 3 page paper on it, enjoy. The first case I read
about brings us all the way back to 1981. In Arizona, Steven Steinberg awakens from a sleep to
find his wife stabbed to death 26 times. Steven quickly fumbles over her body to the phone and
calls police immediately. He tells them his wife has been murdered in a burglary gone wrong.
Upon investigation though, police discover that this was no burglary, that in fact Steven was the
one who has killed his wife. Steven in a state of confusion recounts that night because he has no
memory of murdering his wife, he explains to police he had no reason to, he loved her. This case
then went to trial and Steinberg told judges that he was sleepwalking at the time of the murder, and
therefore not sane during it. The jury found Steven Steinberg not guilty and he was free to go. So

As I read the book about sharing and taking turns, I asked the preschoolers to describe what they
see and how the characters are feeling. The objective was only partially achieved in the yellow
group as I did not give an introduction explaining my book. This mistake could of possibly made
it more difficult for the children to describe the scenario in the story, as they did not know what
to focus on. On the other hand, I did ask questions throughout the book, prompting children to use
descriptive words to describe how the characters were feeling. For example, F.W was able to
explain and use descriptive words when answering my questions throughout the book, but at the
end of the book she was not able to describe the main theme. All eight children reacted the same
way. This is my fault as I did not specify where the preschoolers should maintain their focus.

Research by Schmalleger (2005) shows that in 1829, the world s first modern police force was
formed. Sir Robert Peel selected 1,000 men to wear a uniform and patrol the streets. These
uniformed men were called Bobbies. The new police were founded on two principles, one, belief
that it was possible to discourage crime, and two, practice of preventive patrol. To this day, Bobbies
still patrol the streets of England.
Law enforcement was almost non existent in the American West during the late 1800 s and early
1900 s. Outlaws ruled the land with few worries about law enforcement. Only the bravest men
would attempt to police the west. Some of these brave men were self appointed law men, men like
Charles Lynch, a former Virginia farmer, and Wyatt Earp. These brave men were called Vigilantes
and they tracked down criminals in the west. With out them the west would have been to violent for

Women began involvement with police work in 1845. They were assigned as matrons in the
New York Police Department. In 1893, the Mayor of Chicago appointed Marie Owens as the first
woman to have the title policeman . She was a widow of a Chicago police

Legal Realism Vs Old School Essay
Original old school formalism had a lot of problems. It suggested that there was a single moral
code that inherently true, declared that law was objective when it certainly wasn t, and
encouraged deriving rules from questionable antecedent principles. From these criticisms, legal
realism was born. It was here to fix all of the problems that old school formalism had. However,
critics of legal realism spoke up after its application to create new school legal formalism to then
create a solution to the problems seen in legal realism. This lineage of creation shows how
dissimilar legal realism and new school legal formalism must be: they derived as better solutions
the one preceding it. Almost entirely, these two schools of thought are completely opposite as
they are responses to one another, sharing only one trait between the two. The purposivist theory
of Legal Realism differs greatly from the formalist theory of New School Legal Formalism.
Legal realism is a purposivist theory derived from the critique of old school legal formalism,
citing disagreement with the objective nature of old school legal formalism. Legal realists stated
that reasoning from Natural Law could not be objective, and law was unable to be determined by
logic and reason alone. Stating that all choices are inherently subjective, legal realists became
proponents of a subjective theory of law. They rejected the formalist point of view of the law,
deciding that purposivism only adheres to their subjectivity.
