Grace Paley Father
Grace Paley is an American writer and poet that is best known for her short stories that portray
the everyday life of ordinary people. The short stories that are to be analyzed are Samuel,
Mother, and A Conversation with my Father. The common component shared between these
three stories is the history of everyday life and how individuals deal with it. Grace Paley lived
through some of the world s most historic events, and watched society and the people around her
gradually change as she got older. Paley has been able to study and observe the everyday lives of
men and woman for many years and successfully exemplifies this in her writing. The purpose of
this author study is to understand what influenced Grace Paley to write these stories and what
message she wanted to get across to all of her readers. The purpose is also to fully comprehend her
stories and to see how they could be related to her own life.... Show more content on

She grew up speaking Yiddish, Russian, and English and was the youngest of three. Paley began
writing when she was in her teens and was heavily influenced by W. H. Auden, who she also
studied poetry with. After college she then became an outspoken activist that supported
feminism, anti war, and anti nuclear demonstrations and became very involved with her local
politics. It would be a world without militarism and racism and greed and where women don t
have to fight for their place in the world (Paley). Paley believed in world peace and wanted
everyone to be treated equally. Paley had a long and fulfilling life and saw what the world was
really capable of and she wanted to change it for the better. She also understood that the lives of
people were something worth writing about because everyone sees things in different

Why The National Hockey League
The purpose of this research study is to identify the reasons why the National Hockey League
suffers from low television ratings while the National Football League thrives in television ratings.
The NHL has a very avid fan base and attendance in most markets for the sport is consistently high.
However, there seems to be a lack of ability to translate that success to the television viewers. The
National Football Leaguehas been able to successfully bring its product to all fans through the
television and ratings for the NFL are incredible. By identifying the reasons that the NFL has been
able to translate its product through television and why the NHL has struggled, the field of Sport
Management will have a better understanding of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It has a strong and avid fan base in the United States and Canada. However, the league
continually struggles to compete with other American professional sports leagues when it
comes to television ratings. Specifically the National Football League is one of the most
successful brands in the sports world and has taken hold as the most popular sport in the United
States today. The questions that need to be answered are how can the NHL market their product
to the consumer through television in a way that can compete with the NFL? Why has the NFL
been so successful where the NHL has not? In what areas of marketing through television can the
NHL improve? How does the sport itself affect the television ratings? Finally, is there a
saturation in the sports television market that does not allow the NHL to reach comparable
television ratings as the NFL? There are three major areas to focus on in this research. First, it
must be determined where the NHL struggles in the television ratings market by taking a look at
all demographic statistics. Secondly, an in depth look into previous research conducted on
television ratings for both the NHL and the NFL. Finally, a breakdown of how each league
presently markets their product with a focus on comparing and contrasting those methods to
determine where the NFL is so successful and where the NHL can improve.
Watching sports on television has become an American pastime in itself. It was not that long ago

Robert E. Lee s Second Battle Of Bull Run
Perhaps the most iconic and most widely respected of all Civil War commanders, General Robert
E. Lee was Born January 19, 1807, in Stratford Virginia. At the age of 18, Robert secured an
appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, and graduated second in his
class in the year 1829. Two years after, he married Mary Anna Randolph Custis, who was a
descendent from George Washington. After many jobs, he worked his way up to General of the
Confederate Northern Virginias army. In a matter of months, Lee was able to turn the tide of the
war in the Confederacy s favor. His army had a complete confidence in Robert E. Lee, but
continually suffers from his tendency to push his army farther than they can possibly go. General
Robert E. Lee also won a battle called the Second Manassas, which is also known as the Second
Battle of Bull Run. This battle was fought August 28th through 30th, 1862, and his decisive
strategies led to the victory over Maj. Gen. John Pope s Army of Virginia, even though they were
badly outnumbered. The battle started with Thomas J. Jackson s flank, capturing a Union s supply
depot. Following that, he withdrew a few miles and took defensive positions on Stony Ridge, and

which caused the combined forces of Jackson and Longstreet to devastate the Union assault.
Afterwards, Longstreet s 25,000 men in five divisions counterattacked Pope s army, crushing the
army s left flank, and forcing Pope back to Bull Run. Finally, Pope s army retreated back to

Between the World and Me Between the World and Me examines the history and present
circumstances of racial inequality and segregation in America. Coates directs the book to Samori
to give his audience personal insight into the various stages of a black man s life. From his
childhood, to his college experience, to his complicated role as a father, Coates gradually unfolds a
critical account of the relationship between black and white communities. He calls those who
believe themselves to be white the Dreamers and criticizes them for the indifference toward black
people s experiences. He wants the audience to reflect upon themselves and realize that they are
part of the problem. Coates gives a subtle indication on how he is reaching out to the audience by
writing this letter to his son. He begins the letter by saying Son but he does not specify who his
son until halfway through the book where he finally tells the audience his name. Coates finally
reveals his sons name to the readers by saying, The struggle is in your name, Samori... (69)
indicating that there is an indifference towards black people he wants people to notice. When he
first brings up Samori s name, it gives the audience a sense of their relationship. However, he
might have let the audience know who his son was late in the book to indirectly direct what he was
saying to the audience. Samori s late mentioning in the book also allows the

This section will be used to describe the organization and talk about information systems and the
roles needed to support them.
KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
Knowledge management systems provide a means to assemble and act on the knowledge
accumulated throughout an organization. Such knowledge may include the texts and images
contained in patents, design methods, best ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These systems are typically used by first level supervisors. Generally, such reports focus on past and
present activities, rather than projecting future performance. To prevent information overload,
reports may be automatically sent only under exceptional circumstances or at the specific request of
a manager.
EXECUTIVE INFORMATION SYSTEMS
Executive information systems make a variety of critical information readily available in a highly
summarized and convenient form, typically via a graphical digital dashboard. Senior managers
characteristically employ many informal sources of information, however, so that formal,
computerized information systems are only of partial assistance. Nevertheless, this assistance is
important for the chief executive officer, senior and executive vice presidents, and the board of
directors to monitor the performance of the company, assess the business environment, and develop
strategic directions for the future. In particular, these executives need to compare their organization
s performance with that of its competitors and investigate general economic trends in regions or
countries. Often individualized and relying on multiple media formats, executive information
systems give their users an opportunity to drill down from summary information to increasingly
focused details.
Describe an organization of your choice. You will use this organization as you focus on the concept

Argumentative Essay On Cyber Bullying
A recent review of 377 articles found that cyberbullying affects 10 20% of adolescents as either
victims or perpetrators, or both, and is associated with emotional stress, social anxiety, substance
abuse, depressive symptoms, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts (Wiederhold, 2016). Health
professionals can help identify cyberbullies in their young patients by questioning them about
problems they might be having on the internet and meeting strangers online. Health professionals
are encouraged to be alert and to try and detect these signs as soon as possible. Their help may
help prevent a suicide, which is the third leading cause of death for American youth ages 10 24
(Wiederhold, 2016). Help from our health professionals can make a big difference in the life of
children who are being affected by peer or online victimization.
As a community, all adults play an important role in ensuring that all children are safe and free of
victimization. Communities can create strategies that can help identify and support children that
are being victimized by their peers or strangers online. It is also possible to change the behavior of
the perpetrators and bystanders of these harmful events. There are many benefits of working
together as a community to fight a harmful situation such as bullying. It does not just happen at
school it happens everywhere within the community. It happens in our parks, churches, malls,

The Uas Control Segment Architecture (Ucs) Is A System
The UAS Control Segment Architecture (UCS) is a system interface originally focused on
developing interoperability software for UAS ground control stations (Department of Defense,
2013). UCS standards have expanded beyond the original intent of a common open architecture for
UAS greater than 20 pounds; the maritime Program Executive Office (PEO) is exploring USC in
many of its unmanned platforms (Department of Defense, 2013). UCS is able to eliminate the stove
pipe acquisition process with the adoption of common standards for the ground control segments
which provides interoperabilityas well as reducing life cycle costs (Blais, 2016). UCS
interoperability addresses the following:

The goal of JCUA is to provide a reference baseline system so as to compare it to other open
architectures and find differences in standards, terminology, and content (Blais, 2016). JCUA is that
standard that open systems can be measured against; the JCUA facilitates analysis of programs
for interoperability (Department of Defense, 2013). One example is terminologies, if like
components and functions are not consistently labeled across architectures it becomes difficult to
determine where they are alike or different (Gonzales Harting 2014). As C. Blais points out in the
report Unmanned Systems Interoperability Standards (2016), all DOD Programs of Record (POR)
are required to comply with the Net Ready Key Performance Parameter (NRKPP) (Blais, 2016).

(Koester et al., 2010). UAS must be capable of net centric military operations; they must be able to

Kanye West Fans s Influence On The Artist

their icon in a positive way amid negative press he is prone to receiving. Although they aren t well

The concept of excessive selfishness has been recognized throughout history. In ancient Greece the
concept was understood as hubris. It is only more recently that narcissism has been defined in
psychological terms. Healthy narcissism forms a constant, realistic self interest and mature goals
and principles and an ability to form deep relations to an something. Within psychology, there are
two main branches of research into narcissism: clinical and social psychology. These approaches
differ in their view of narcissism, with the former treating it as a disorder, thus as discrete, and the
latter treating it as a personality trait, thus as a continuum. These two strands of research tend
loosely to stand in a divergent relation to one another, although they converge in places. Self
regulation in narcissists involves such things as striving to make one s self look and feel positive,
special, successful and important. It comes in both intrapsychic, such as blaming a situation rather
than self for failure, and interpersonal forms, such as using a relationship to serve one s own self.
Some differences in self regulation between narcissists and non narcissists can be seen with

My Personal Life Goals
Have you ever woken up one morning and asked yourself, What am I doing with my life? This
happened to me one day, and I quickly realized I have lost sight of my goals. Goals help you set
a road map for your life, to accomplish things that are special to you and will help you move
through life. They can be as simple as: wanting to improve your car, maintaining a healthy lifestyle,
or on the long term end: wanting to graduate college with a degree in accounting. My first goal,
would be to improve my clunker car, which is something I have always owned my entire life. A
clunker car is usually an older model car that is not in the best condition. Instead of getting a
brand new car, which is expensive, it is cheaper just to fix the little problems in the car. Which can
be made up into smaller goals because they are easier to achieve one at a time. For example, right
now there are no sunvisors in my car because the ones I currently have will not stay in the upright
position, instead they move around and will not stay still. Replacing my old sun visors with
new ones would be extremely helpful on those hot sunny summer days to block the sun and they
will stay in their place when you don t need to use them. Secondly, there is a cassette radio player
in my car. Cassettes are very hard to find nowadays, everything is on cds or you can stream music
with your cell phone and play it through the car speakers. To be able to have a cd player would
mean no longer to have to fast

Chickfil-A Business Proposal
For my project, I will be creating the accounting portions of a business plan for a Chickfil
A restaurant.
I have selected this business for several reasons. Firstly, Chick fil A is the busiest restaurant I have
ever seen. It is the only vendor in the mall food court that requires waiting line dividers. The double
drive thru line wraps around the building most of the time. During peak hours, the parking lot is so
busy that it cannot hold any more cars. Although there are plenty of competing fast food options in
my town, including McDonald s, Burger King, Subway, KFC,
Popeye s and Wendy s all within half a mile of the Chick fil A restaurant, people will park in the
adjacent lot and walk across a busy road rather than go elsewhere for lunch.

According to their website, they receive approximately
20,000 franchise inquiries every year and select 75 to 80, on average, to become new franchise
operators. Last year, when a friend of a friend opened a Chick fil A franchise, I joked that they
would be serving chicken and taking home the bacon . While I did not know for sure how much
profit could be made from a franchise, I could only assume, based on its popularity, that it was a
very lucrative business.
The story of Chick fil A began in 1946 when Truett Cathy, along with his brother Ben, opened the
Dwarf Grill (now the Dwarf House) near the Ford Motor Company Atlanta Assembly
Plant. In 1960, when his second Dwarf Grill location was accidentally burned down, Truett
Cathy was forced to rethink his business. His fried chicken sandwich had always sold well, but
they took a long time to prepare and were more expensive compared to hamburgers and fries. In
1961, he found a pressure cooker that could cook a chicken breast in the same amount of time it
took for him to grill a burger. He then sought to reduce the cost of raw chicken by purchasing
boneless, skinless chicken breasts from Goode Brothers Poultry Company. Although

Summary Of All Quiet On The Western Front By Nicolo...
When you do something wrong and you are afraid of the consequences, there is usually one
parent that you would prefer to get scolded by. This is because they are the one that is more
lenient or clement, as opposed to cruel. In All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria
Remarque and The Prince by Nicolo Machiavelli, the question of whether it is better to be cruel
or clement arises. Machiavelli devises that leaders should strive to be considered clement over
cruel for a few reasons. In the book by Erich Remarque, there is a leader named Himmelstoss that
Machiavelli could dissect based on the beginning description of him. Machiavelli would
determine that Himmelstoss is cruel because he does not give his troops any mercy and by
doing so, has garnered their hatred of him. Machiavelli would determine Himmelstoss as cruel
due to the lack of mercifulness he gives to his subordinates. When Himmelstoss found out that the
character Tjaden wet his bed when he slept at night, instead of giving him a shake down or
something similar, a more sinister plan formulated in his mind, He hunted up another piss a bed
... and quartered him with Tjaden. Himmelstoss put these two so that one occupied the upper and
the other the lower bunk. The man underneath of course had a vile time. The next night they were
changed over and the lower one put on top so that he could retaliate. (Remarque 46).Himmelstoss
cruelty is highlighted masterfully here. Instead of simply yelling at Tjaden or making him scrub
boots till his hands bled, he devised an atrocious way of punishment. Further adding to his sense
of cruelty, Himmelstoss includes another soldier in an attempt to demoralize and humiliate both
of them.Clemency, even in a small form, can have a big impact. Too much clemency, and the
people run rampant. Too little, and there isn t a people to lead. Himmelstoss clearly leans more
toward one side when he should be seeking a balance between the two, Therefore a prince, so long
as he keeps his subjects united and loyal, ought not to mind the reproach of cruelty; because with a
few examples he will be more merciful than those, who through too much mercy, allow disorders to
arise... (Machiavelli 1). What the quote means is that there

Tree Of 40 Trees
John Ramdath
The Tree of 40 Fruits
In 2008 Van Aken acquired the New York Agricultural Experiment Station orchard. Aken then began
to graft buds from the over 250 heritage varieties grown there on to stock trees. This stock tree then
tree accumulated branches from forty different donor trees, each with a different fruit, including
almond, apricot, cherry, nectarine, peach and plum varieties.
This is possible because of proper grafting techniques and the trees biology. Grafting a tree is a
farming technique in which a piece of the donor tree s stem, with buds, is inserted into the stock of
a tree. This is done because seeds from fruit trees cannot be reproduced true to the original cultivar

In the callus differentiation gives rise to the two major types of plant vascular tissue xylem and
phloem. Xylem is responsible for keeping the plant hydrated and can normally be fond towards
the center of the plant. All Xylem cells are dead, elongated and hollow. The two types of Xylem
cells are tracheids and vessel elements. Tracheids are found in most gymnosperms, ferns and
lycophytes. Tracheids cells are long, thin, and are connected together by tapered ends. The
tapered ends run alongside each other and have pits. These pits are holes in the cell wall that
allow for water to travel from cell to cell. The other type of Xylem is vessel elements which form
the xylem of almost all angiosperms. Vessel elements are shorter and wider than tracheids. Also
the vessel elements are connected end to end and the ends contain what are known as perforation
plates. Perforation plates have a number of holes in their cell walls which allows for water to
travel freely between cells. Phloem is composed of living cells and transports important sugars,
organic compounds, nutrients and macromolecules. The nutritious sap within the phloem travels by
diffusion between cells. Phloem is made from cells called sieve tube members and companion cells
which are normally located on the outer layers of the plant. Sieve tube members are cells that create
chains of cells running the length of the plant.

The Benefits Of Education In This Is Water By David Foster...
Many high school students have grown jaded with the modern education system, sitting for hours
in a classroom almost every day having seemingly useless information crammed into their brains. At
some point, the curiosity died and left behind the average student of today. Most people will agree
that a change must occur within the way the youth receives an education; however, fewer people
have touched on the concept that the students must change their mindsets as well. They must all
look beyond the surface level education that teachers tend to focus on and understand what more
they can gain. Throughout David Foster Wallaces speech This is Water, Wallace primarily employs
didactic little parable ish stories along with hyperbolic examples to enforce the idea that the true
benefits of education come from learning simple awareness rather than knowledge. Almost
immediately, Wallace inserts the opening to the story that gives his speech a title, speaking about
two young fish that eventually come across an an older fish who asks them the oddly perplexing
question of how s the water? . He then goes on to explain that somehow, the fish do not understand
the obvious fact that they live in the water, it surrounds them. This story serves as an introduction to
the point Wallace hopes to give his audience, that a liberal artseducation is not so much about filling
you up with knowledge as it is about quote teaching you how to think. The speaker then prompts his
audience to

Road Not Taken Explication
Before winning awards and gaining the reputation of being a great poet, Robert Frost struggled
early in his life. Before taking his family to England to start a new life in 1912, Frost s life was
highlighted by variety of different jobs (727), inconsistent attendance at college, and the attempt
to run a farm. He also lost his father at a young age and two of Frost s children either died or had
a mental collapse. However, after his move to England and the publication of his second book,

Meanings and Significations of Linguistic Terms
The language is the main communication channel for the human species. As humans are social
beings, thorough understanding of the language is essential for coherent and correct
communication that can lead to good, clear transmission of ideas, meanings and subtle nuances the
way people intend to. In former times, humans relied on symbols and drawings to make their
messages known, their system of communicationbeing quite rudimentary compared to what we
have today, when the languagehas seen an accelerated development and has grown into such broad
directions that people cannot even possibly know the entire array of meanings and significations.
In the following, the paper will go through a list of words, trying to explain what they mean and
give examples of their uses.
Idiom simply said, an idiom is a construction of words that has a figurative meaning, different from
the meanings of the words that build it. However, the figurative meaning of an idiom is not
necessarily predictable from the direct meanings of its components. To illustrate this main aspect,
perhaps the best well known example is: It s raining cats and dogs . Here, there is clearly absolutely
no reference to the animals mentioned, what the idiom points out is that it s heavily raining. The
English language (both British and American) has thousands of idioms, this showing just how
heavily important they are to the language. Another, more direct meaning of the word idiom would
be synonym to dialect , the

Insolvency Practitioners
The rules regulating the independence of insolvency practitioners serve an important purpose in the
profession; to secure public confidence in the impartiality and effectiveness of the regulations and
discipline of the insolvency system. The purpose of my report is to comment on the expectations
imposed upon liquidators including whether the Walton Constructions Pty Limited (2014) FCAFC
85 ( the Walton case ), sets an unrealistic standard. The importance of the Walton case is for
insolvency practitioners to recognise the legal principles that can be drawn from the decision.
Although I am able to appreciate the ideals behind the results of the Walton case and the standard
this sets, my findings indicate that the decision made by the high court... Show more content on

There is a clear shift towards principles based regulation in the insolvency profession. The leading
purposes of the Code is to provide broad principles that can be applied to a multitude of
circumstances with the aim of averting practitioners from justifying a particular course of action via
a loophole in the Act. The results of cases such as the Walton case serve as a reminder to
practitioners that the Act merely provides a minimum benchmark as to the appropriate course of
action and that practitioners should have regard to the requirements of the code when considering a
new appointment. Interestingly, Honourable Justice Robertson made the following comment in the
Walton case being that he does not regard the Insolvency Practitioners Association of Australia s
guide as extrinsic material appropriate or permitted to be taken into account in construing s 60 and
436DA of the Act. Although this is the case, the Code is still pertinent to practitioners. As stated by
Miss Alicia Hill and Jessica Patrick although the Code cannot be directly taken into account in
construing legislation, it has a very important place in regulating insolvency

The current database provides a basic inventory system. For the new application to be a success,
there are several items that need to be addressed with the current Kudler Database. For instance,
Kudler needs additional tables such as Reserved Inventory table. This table will be a transaction
table that will reserve the items by removing them from inventory and holding them in the reserved
table until one of the following conditions is met.
In addition, the primary keys that are preserved will need to be configured as required fields, and
there are several primary keys that can be replaced with Auto Number Identities. The Inventory
table will also need to be modified to indicate what quantities are on hand at each individual store.
Under the current database, there is no visible way to show which store has inventory. For
example, one store may have 35 boxes of Frog Legs, while there may be two other stores that are
out of stock. Normalizing the database will ultimately result in minimizing data redundancy and
optimizing the data structures by containing smaller, more flexible tables. Once the tables are
normalized and data integrity has been maximized, referential integrity will be addressed by
establishing relationships between data elements and their appropriate groupings. Upgrading to SQL

Wounded Warrior Leadership Challenges
The Wounded Warrior Leadership Challenges One of the most challenging assignments that I
experienced throughout my military career was working as a First Sergeant in a Warrior Transition
Unit (WTU) at Fort Hood, Texas. The central mission of the Wounded Warrior Unit is to heal,
recover, and rehabilitate Soldiers back into the Force or civilian communities as Veterans.
Placement in this environment, or this kind of unit can be rewarding, but at the same time can be
very challenging.
As a First Sergeant in WTU, my responsibilities/duties included the health and welfare of Soldiers
who were placed under the Commander s authority. One question I asked myself when accepting
this change of responsibility was... how am I going to achieve the responsibilities of identifying
the needs of a Wounded Warrior without the proper training and knowledge? As a First Sergeant
working for a Warrior Transition Unit, I experienced many trials while trying to understand and
learn these triads of Care, and the Triad of Leadership techniques, followed by the challenges in
dealing and understanding each Soldier s needs.

Othello and Fanny Price are being prejudiced because of their appearance. Othello is judged

Strophion functioned as the breast band. The original explanation for this undergarment was
uncertain, as very few evidence of the strophion survived, and the visual sources were difficult to
identify. According to existing vase painting and sculpture, the breasts were either presented
without any covering, or revealing the silhouette. Mortal women who wore breast band were
dancers and entertainers. Embroidered patterns and skinny straps crossing over the chest
decorated the breast band as a distinguished form of costume that aimed to be displayed blatantly

For this reason, some experts think that the term Personal Health Record is not descriptive enough
and can limit innovation and usage of these systems. Personal Health Record Systems (PHRS) and
Personal Health Platforms (PHP) have been suggested as more appropriate terms.
Types of PHRs
From an architectural point of view, PHRs can be divided into four different types.
Stand alone PHR: This is the simplest form of a PHR that does not connect with any other
system. The data is usually entered manually by the patient. This type of PHR can be in the
form of USB devices, CDs, smart cards, desktop applications, or even web based applications that
can be accessed through the internet. Although this model of PHR gives patient complete control
over data and seems more secure as it has no connection to other systems, it lacks the reliability
and usefulness and is not considered a preferred model. Stand alone PHRs can only be considered
computerized versions of paper based health records the some people keep.
Provider tethered PHRs: In this model, PHR is developed and maintained by a healthcare
provider, insurer, or employer. The type of health information that is stored in these PHRs is
affected by the nature of the provider business. For instance, in PHRs that are offered by insurers,
the content is mostly administrative and billing in nature. In the case of healthcare providers, PHR
would be a customized view of

Americans have gone from eating roughly 234lbs of meat per capita in 980 to 273lbs in 2007
(qtd. Pluhar 2). In the past meat was a side on a dinner plate but as years have gone on, meat has
become the main event. The increased demand for meat, as stated above, has caused issues with
both the environment and animal welfare. But the demand has also caused issues with the
welfare of humans. One of the issues humans face are the pathogens that are released from
stressed, immune compromised, containment filled food animals (qtd. Pluhar 2). Because of the
increased exposure, humans are more susceptible to diseases (qtd. Pluhar 2). Food borne
illnesses are a big issue and since the commercialization of farming, the number of cases of food
borne illnesses has grown. 76 million people are hit by fouled food annually in the United
States. 5,000 of those people die (qtd. Pluhar 2). This is due to the slack regulations in the
industry. Studies have been done in low CAFOs regions versus regions with a high concentration
of CAFOs. One study showed that people were more likely to develop eczema in the regions with
a high concentration of CAFOs. It could be argued that the increase in illnesses and the increase in
factory farms could be completely unrelated. But research should be done to provide conclusive
evidence showing the relationship between the two. People should be able to eat their food without

Google File System is a copyrighted distributed file system developed by google itself and it was

Science-Fiction Films During The 1950 s
The science fiction film genre serves as an excellent medium for examining shifting power
structures, social paranoia and Cold War politics during the 1950s. A number of films released
during this period, including: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), The Day the Earth Stood
Still (1951), Them (1954) and Attack of the 50ft Woman (1958), are particularly symptomatic of
the social and political atmosphere of the time. These films navigate not only narrative based
issues such as the threat of aliens and science experiments gone wrong; but also wider issues of the
time, such as the Cold War, changes in the US filmindustry, urbanisation, politics, the growing
power of women and most significantly, social concern about nuclear energy.
Before analysing individual science fiction films from the 1950s, it is important to gain a clear
understanding of the social, cultural and political background against which these films were set.
Paranoia is a term frequently used to describe an acute, anxiety dominated medical condition
(Paranoia, 2009), however in the context of 1950 s America, this term can be used more accurately
to describe the general, delusionary mood of the nation. The first important event that influenced a
paranoiac filmmaking atmosphere was the Cold War. As opposed to the hot war (WWII) that
involved active military hostilities, the Cold War was based on heightened tension and suspicions
between Western Bloc (USA) powers and Eastern Bloc (Soviet Union) powers (The

Wildfires have played an important role in shaping history. They have shaped private islands and
public areas. Even though wildfires have destroyed thousands of acres of land and killed millions
of people, humans still start these furies of fire either on accident or on purpose. Also, many
times people have started controlled burns which people use for different reasons. Sometimes,
wildfires are not as bad as some people may think. Even if someone is caught in a wildfire,
preparing and getting out is not hard at all. Humans may not always be ready for a wildfire, but
they do know how to stop one.
Wildfires are misunderstood by some people, some think they only happen on purpose, others think
that wildfires happen very rarely, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
But that s not true at all. Firefighters sometimes start a wildfire on purpose, which is called a
controlled burn. The controlled burning started in 1995 by the US Forest service. Controlled
burns are wildfires that have their speed, intensity, and location of the wildfire. These wildfires
are controlled by removing or adding fuel. Controlled burns happen to eliminate flammable fuels
like dry leaves so a real wildfire doesn t happen, restore the health in the ecosystem, recycle
nutrients and to prepare an area for planting or new vegetation. Controlled burns don t happen
very often, which means they aren t bad for the air.If a controlled burn is hard to control or a
wildfire has started, Firefighters may do something called Back Burning . Back burning is used
to eliminate fuels for the fire in the direction it s going. For example, if a wildfire is heading
north, then fire fighters will make a back burn north of that fire. When firefighters back burn,
they make small fires to make it harder for the main fire to get more fuel and easier to put it out.
Back burns are used in combination with controlled burns to limit an area to that controlled burn.
The US Forest service decides when and how to do controlled burns by finding out what
vegetation needs to and doesn t need to be burnt, what intensity the fire has to be at, considering the
history of burning in the area, determining the time of day to start the burn, and finding the quality
of the moisture and the fuels in the area. Controlled burns are very safe. Very much planning goes
into controlled burns, so it will be very hard to lose control, but it still happens. So controlled burns
are a lot more useful than people

It s Time to Make Drugs Legal for Personal Use Essay
It s Time to Make Drugs Legal for Personal Use
Drugs are such a controversy and people have such strong opinions about whether they should be
legal or illegal. I don t have a strong opinion on this topic; I m easily swayed. For the most part
though, I think that they should be legalized because people do it anyways and if they were legal
the government could regulate their use and sale more, the government should be receiving the
profits of the drug business rather than dealers, marijuana has most of the same effects as
cigarettes, and it s been proven over and over how prohibition doesn t seem to work.
Each year, the government wastes $20 billion dollars on the war against drugs, but it doesn t seem
to do any good (Liberty For ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most important thing for me is that people do it anyways; they always have and most likely
always will. Drug prohibition has not stopped 30 million people from trying cocaine and 60
million people from trying marijuana. Prohibition also has not stopped the number of heroin
users from increasing by 150% and the number of cocaine users from increasing by 10,000%.
Moreover, prohibition has not kept drugs out of the hands of children: in 1988 54% of high
school seniors admitted to having tried illicit drugs; 88% said it was fairly easy or very easy to
obtain marijuana: and 54% said the same about cocaine (Boaz 229). Nobody can deny these
facts, and these are even facts from the times where the war on drugs was passing stricter laws.
None of the laws seemed to make a difference accept if you get caught with drugs, you have a
longer sentence. The sentence for marijuana possession usually averages longer than a murder
sentence. I really don t think it s worse to have marijuana than kill another human being; that doesn
t even begin to make sense to me.
I think that, like many other things in history, drugs will someday be legal. I mean coffee, gin,
and tobacco all used to be illegal, but now all are in regular use in the United States. The
Netherlands, who is the only country I know to legalize marijuana, surprisingly has a lower
percentage of 10th graders who have tried marijuana when compared to the United States. Maybe
people wouldn t do it

Gertz s Breakdown

Breakdown: How America s Intelligence Failures Led to September 11 is an informative book
written by Bill Gertz who attended George Washington College (Gertz

Washington D.C., this book is only one of Gertz s successful novels. Enemies,
Treachery, and New York Times bestselling book Betrayal are just some of his masterpieces
(Penguin Random House). In this narrow minded piece, Gertz highlights many incidents that
foreshadowed the attack of the twin towers on September 11, 2001 by our al Qaeda rivals. This

There is more than enough information in his book to form an opinion and to me the point is very

fight with the still prominent Iraq and other Middle East participants. I congratulate Bill Gertz on
his audacity and agree with his horrific findings.
In conclusion, the Central Intelligence Agency failed and disappointed our nation.
But, we being American s, always think that there is an easy fix whether it is through super glue

Night Falls At Manhattan ( 1997 ) And I Want At Live ! (...
Two films will be analyzed in the process of the research paper, Night Falls in Manhattan (1997)
and I Want to Live! (1958). Each movie provides a unique look at different genres of the criminal
justice system, police drama and prison/execution films, respectively. The following paper will
analyze the characteristics of each film using knowledge that was taught throughout the course of
this class. The first movie, Night Falls in Manhattan, begins with two detectives calling for backup
as they proceed to apprehending a known drug dealer, Jordan Washington. Liam Casey and Joey
Allegretto, the two detectives first on scene, had heard from an informant that their suspect was in
the apartment. Liam was shot through the door numerous times as they approached. Minutes pass
as the building is swarmed by three different precincts. Washington makes a getaway in a police
squad car after shooting and killing two officers why fleeing. In total, three officers were killed
and one was seriously wounded in the activities of the night. It cuts to Sean Casey, son of the
wounded Liam Casey, getting appointed by the district attorney Morgenstern as the lead prosecutor
in the case against Washington. Sean, an ex cop turned prosecutor, ends up winning the court
proceedings and Washington is sentenced to life without parole. All in all everything is going
great for Sean; he is in love with Peggy Lindstrom (an associate for the defendant s lawyer Vigoda

What can Historians learn from this document about how as married man saw his role as head of
the family in mid 17th century?
The nature of this document is taken from the notebooks of Nehemiah Wallington (1818 1654).
An extract of the passages of my life (Booy, D. (end) 2007), written in 1662. The extract is one
of over fifty journals written over a twenty years period, of which seven originals remain. The
purpose of this document is described in Grell (2016 p.81) as a means of private and later public
record relating of Wallington s reflections of his religious struggle for salvation as a sinner that
believes he belongs to the Elect , those predestined for salvation. This autobiographical work
provided historians with primary source of evidence of the thoughts and beliefs of a Puritan married
man, and his religious responsibilities and relationship with his household.
To contextualize the text, Wallington s religious beliefs were taken from Protestant Lutheran and
Calvinistic influences that evolved in England as the Puritan movement, which was a non
conformist religious sects that had moved away from the Church of England Anglican practices and
rituals in search a purer, form of Protestantism. (Marshall, P. 2014 p.141). Lutheranism had idealized
marriage and the idea of holy families and Luther stated in The estate of marriage Brandt (1963)
that woman is a necessary evil, and that no household can be without such an evil . Wallington

Beowulf, the Epic Hero
Beowulf, the Epic Hero
There have been many grand stories about great warriors, and champions; those about epic heroes
however, are the truly exceptional tales. One such tale, over a thousand years old, stands out from
all the rest: Beowulf, the tale of a great warrior, on his quest to achieve eternal glory, defeating great
opponents. Throughout the whole story, Beowulf demonstrates most if not all of the qualities that
an archetypal hero possesses. He embodies the highest ideals of his culture, travels to find
adventure, and is not emotionally connected to his followers. Beowulf undertakes his journey to
achieve something of great value to himself and society, defeats monsters, yet maintains humanity.
Although Beowulf experiences ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Later in life, when Beowulf is crowned King, he asserts himself greater by chasing after the
Dragon, to protect his kingdom.
Another obvious heroic characteristic that Beowulf portrays is the defeat of monsters and other
malevolence. He does this throughout the story, not only using brute force, but also cunning
tactics, such as the time when he attacks Grendel s extremely sensitive ears. Beowulf also
disposes of Grendel s Mother, using a gigantic sword in her lair to decapitate her, and ends the
reign of terror on the Danes. Years later, after Beowulf is crowned King, his land is assailed by
the Dragon. This epic battle proves just how valiant Beowulf actually is, going after the beast
single handedly, instead of endangering any of his men. It is a long, hard fought battle, in which
Beowulf contests with all his might. Beowulf ultimately kills the Dragon rips out its heart , but not
without a price; the battle costs the King his life.
Although the acts of battle and heroism that Beowulf performs are anything but human, he manages
to maintain a sense of benevolence. During a Frisian invasion, in which the assailants are no match
for the Geats and Danes, Beowulf states, This is not battle, Wiglaf. This is slaughter. When a
prisoner is captured in this battle, Beowulf prevents the men from teasing and ridiculing him,
demanding that they kill him swiftly, and respectfully. When this man, Finn of Frisia,

employment, rehabilitation and recovery, and quality of life. It also states mention that The Bob

to help patients get the right help they need and to store their information securely. This falls under
rehabilitation and recovery because we guide them into the correct pathway with our data.
Purpose: Solid State Hard Disk
With high volume of data that we receive, my proposal to The Woodruff Foundation is to upgrade
our work computers with solid state hard disk. Our computers right now have hard disk drives;
which hard disk drive have slow transfer rates. With solid state hard disk we are able to keep fast

our performance to do work.

Hypochondria Research Paper
How much power do our own thoughts have on our health? We have all heard of the term self
fulfilling prophecy but, can this actually apply to our bodies and well being? Defined as an
illness anxiety disorder, hypochondria is a very serious fear and disorder that without proper care,
can take over your life. Despite the lack of an actual medical condition, the perception of a person
suffering with hypochondriasis leads them to believe they have a serious illness. On the other hand,
psychosomatic disorder is an illness that affects not only your mind, but your body as well. Those
that have a psychosomatic disorder tend to already have some sort of sickness, but can make their

Some of the common symptoms of a regular hypochondriac include frequent doctors visits,
avoiding exposure to the world due to fear of contagious diseases, obsessive research about
illnesses and various symptoms, and fear that even the smallest sign of something health related
may be a terminal illness such as cancer. This kind of hypochondriac truly believes they are ill
although their doctor has told them they are perfectly okay, and often need extensive reassurance
that there is nothing wrong with them. The depressive hypochondriac is more emotionally invested
in their fear and usually believe they are dying. This kind of hypochondriac suffers most from
delusional thoughts, believing surely that they are dying and having no clue of how irrational their
thoughts are. Because of this, the depressive hypochondriac is more at risk for committing suicide
than others. Lastly, the somatoform kind of hypochondriac has actual physical symptoms and
believes there is a serious reason behind those symptoms, but does not think absurdly about what
they may or not have. More easily put, the somatoform kind of hypochondriac does feel sick, does
believe they have something serious that is related to their symptoms, but does not think they are

Nosferatu Outcome One Analysis
Outcome One is the ability to write in a way that reaches one s intended audience. That means the
author must understand the differences between audiences, genres, and formal versus informal
writing. For instance, while writing a movie review, the author assumes the reader has not seen the
movie. Therefore, to be able to reach the intended audience, the author must summarize the movie
s plot and specific scenes to familiarize the reader before they reveal why they liked or disliked the
film.
Outcome One is important because if one does not take their audience into account, it can produce
inconsistencies that lead the audience to be confused on the paper s intended purpose. A formal
paper should address the audience respectfully, and if a writer were to constantly use slang within
the piece, it could be regarded as being disrespectful. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because we were asked to do a formal analysis, I did not need to provide a summary that
introduced the film s plot or specific scene. Instead I went straight into my analysis, The director
uses parallel editing to build suspense, making us believe Ellen s end is coming quicker than we
expected. I show that I know how to use Outcome One because I do not explain what parallel
editing is and I do not introduce Ellen to the audience. Because the paper asks to evaluate the
techniques used in the film, neither of those aspects are necessary to construct a successful paper.
In this paper, I prove I am aware of my audience by not admitting unnecessary

Subculture In The 1960s
Economic changes were happening in Britain; the economy had changed from heavy to light
industry. Light industry meant that jobs were created for unskilled individuals. The unskilled
workers tended to be the younger population, In Britain the labour markets had buoyed up levels of
youth employment during the 1950s and 60s (Osgerby, 2004, p. 25) and were also inexpensive to
employ. With new found economic independence young urban workers began to take advantage of
the growing leisure opportunities that were becoming available to them (Davis, 1990; Newburn,
2002) some considered this as the formation of youth subcultures. With the younger generation in
jobs this meant that they had extra money to spend on leisure. such developments gave... Show

All these subcultures were created through what music people listened to, the way they dressed
was defined by what music they listened to also. The punk look was distressed, they would
intentionally wear torn up trousers, heavy doc martens, the fabrics that they wore were all torn
and pined back together with safety pins. Their hair was usually in a Mohawk style and their
makeup was very dark. The punk look created a androgynous, tomboyish or unisex style
(Leblanc, 1999, p. 156) before the punk generation came along the public had never seen this
look been done before. The fact that women were dressing less like women and more like men
scared them. They listened to music such as The Buzzcocks and The jam, these bands would
often have offensive language in their songs. Substance abuse was also common in the punk
scene, punks had a hard exterior which people were intimidated by. Glam rock was born in the
70s followed by punk, David Bowie and Iggy Pop were contributors to the glam rock scene.
Glam rock also had an androgynous theme running through it, the fashion was bizarre With it
came fashions, which caught on with everyone, including platform shoes, huge flared trousers
and winged collared shirts. The bigger your platforms the cooler you were (Tait, 2011, p. 89).

Installation Art And Its Impact On Art

Human Sexuality In Early Adulthood
In this paper, I will be writing a personal journal entry in response to the textbook, Human
Sexuality in a World of Diversity (9th ed.) written by Spencer Rathus, Jeffery Nevid, and Lois
Fichner Rathus (2014). They write about genital play in children and that sexual curiosity can
develop as early as one year. I agree that children have a natural curiosity about body parts, what
they do, and how they feel. I think it is appropriate for children to learn the correct body part
terminology and have self exploration. The textbook further discusses that around the age of two
years old children can engage in genital play with other children, which could include genital
hugging, cuddling, and kissing. I do not think that it is appropriate for children... Show more content

The negative factors against co sleeping are that the parent could suffocate their child and there
could be adverse effects on sexual development. The positive factors for co sleeping are easier
for child to get back to sleep if awakened in the night, easier breastfeeding throughout the night,
and possible better intellectual development. Although the AAP discourages co sleeping, up to
20% of mothers are given information from physician on co sleeping (Rathus, Nevid, Fichner

new parents that a child should be left in the crib to cry themselves to sleep. Children are raised
to be able to sleep alone and independently, some even from the day of birth. I find it unnatural to
have a child sleep alone. The baby lives inside the womb for none months, which is a small space
that provides consistent comfort. In my experience, after giving birth, the baby desires that same

  • 2. Grace Paley Father Grace Paley is an American writer and poet that is best known for her short stories that portray the everyday life of ordinary people. The short stories that are to be analyzed are Samuel, Mother, and A Conversation with my Father. The common component shared between these three stories is the history of everyday life and how individuals deal with it. Grace Paley lived through some of the world s most historic events, and watched society and the people around her gradually change as she got older. Paley has been able to study and observe the everyday lives of men and woman for many years and successfully exemplifies this in her writing. The purpose of this author study is to understand what influenced Grace Paley to write these stories and what message she wanted to get across to all of her readers. The purpose is also to fully comprehend her stories and to see how they could be related to her own life.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She grew up speaking Yiddish, Russian, and English and was the youngest of three. Paley began writing when she was in her teens and was heavily influenced by W. H. Auden, who she also studied poetry with. After college she then became an outspoken activist that supported feminism, anti war, and anti nuclear demonstrations and became very involved with her local politics. It would be a world without militarism and racism and greed and where women don t have to fight for their place in the world (Paley). Paley believed in world peace and wanted everyone to be treated equally. Paley had a long and fulfilling life and saw what the world was really capable of and she wanted to change it for the better. She also understood that the lives of people were something worth writing about because everyone sees things in different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Why The National Hockey League The purpose of this research study is to identify the reasons why the National Hockey League suffers from low television ratings while the National Football League thrives in television ratings. The NHL has a very avid fan base and attendance in most markets for the sport is consistently high. However, there seems to be a lack of ability to translate that success to the television viewers. The National Football Leaguehas been able to successfully bring its product to all fans through the television and ratings for the NFL are incredible. By identifying the reasons that the NFL has been able to translate its product through television and why the NHL has struggled, the field of Sport Management will have a better understanding of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It has a strong and avid fan base in the United States and Canada. However, the league continually struggles to compete with other American professional sports leagues when it comes to television ratings. Specifically the National Football League is one of the most successful brands in the sports world and has taken hold as the most popular sport in the United States today. The questions that need to be answered are how can the NHL market their product to the consumer through television in a way that can compete with the NFL? Why has the NFL been so successful where the NHL has not? In what areas of marketing through television can the NHL improve? How does the sport itself affect the television ratings? Finally, is there a saturation in the sports television market that does not allow the NHL to reach comparable television ratings as the NFL? There are three major areas to focus on in this research. First, it must be determined where the NHL struggles in the television ratings market by taking a look at all demographic statistics. Secondly, an in depth look into previous research conducted on television ratings for both the NHL and the NFL. Finally, a breakdown of how each league presently markets their product with a focus on comparing and contrasting those methods to determine where the NFL is so successful and where the NHL can improve. Watching sports on television has become an American pastime in itself. It was not that long ago when watching ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Robert E. Lee s Second Battle Of Bull Run Perhaps the most iconic and most widely respected of all Civil War commanders, General Robert E. Lee was Born January 19, 1807, in Stratford Virginia. At the age of 18, Robert secured an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point, and graduated second in his class in the year 1829. Two years after, he married Mary Anna Randolph Custis, who was a descendent from George Washington. After many jobs, he worked his way up to General of the Confederate Northern Virginias army. In a matter of months, Lee was able to turn the tide of the war in the Confederacy s favor. His army had a complete confidence in Robert E. Lee, but continually suffers from his tendency to push his army farther than they can possibly go. General Robert E. Lee also won a battle called the Second Manassas, which is also known as the Second Battle of Bull Run. This battle was fought August 28th through 30th, 1862, and his decisive strategies led to the victory over Maj. Gen. John Pope s Army of Virginia, even though they were badly outnumbered. Coates directs the book to Samori to give his audience personal insight into the various stages of a black man s life. From his childhood, to his college experience, to his complicated role as a father, Coates gradually unfolds a critical account of the relationship between black and white communities. He calls those who believe themselves to be white the Dreamers and criticizes them for the indifference toward black people s experiences. He wants the audience to reflect upon themselves and realize that they are part of the problem. Coates gives a subtle indication on how he is reaching out to the audience by writing this letter to his son. He begins the letter by saying Son but he does not specify who his son until halfway through the book where he finally tells the audience his name. Coates finally reveals his sons name to the readers by saying, The struggle is in your name, Samori... (69) indicating that there is an indifference towards black people he wants people to notice. When he first brings up Samori s name, it gives the audience a sense of their relationship. However, he might have let the audience know who his son was late in the book to indirectly direct what he was saying to the audience. Samori s late mentioning in the book also allows the ... • 13. My Personal Life Goals Have you ever woken up one morning and asked yourself, What am I doing with my life? This happened to me one day, and I quickly realized I have lost sight of my goals. Goals help you set a road map for your life, to accomplish things that are special to you and will help you move through life. They can be as simple as: wanting to improve your car, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, or on the long term end: wanting to graduate college with a degree in accounting. My first goal, would be to improve my clunker car, which is something I have always owned my entire life. A clunker car is usually an older model car that is not in the best condition. Instead of getting a brand new car, which is expensive, it is cheaper just to fix the little problems in the car. Which can be made up into smaller goals because they are easier to achieve one at a time. For example, right now there are no sunvisors in my car because the ones I currently have will not stay in the upright position, instead they move around and will not stay still. Replacing my old sun visors with new ones would be extremely helpful on those hot sunny summer days to block the sun and they will stay in their place when you don t need to use them. The double drive thru line wraps around the building most of the time. During peak hours, the parking lot is so busy that it cannot hold any more cars. Although there are plenty of competing fast food options in my town, including McDonald s, Burger King, Subway, KFC, Popeye s and Wendy s all within half a mile of the Chick fil A restaurant, people will park in the adjacent lot and walk across a busy road rather than go elsewhere for lunch. While I did not know for sure how much profit could be made from a franchise, I could only assume, based on its popularity, that it was a very lucrative business. The story of Chick fil A began in 1946 when Truett Cathy, along with his brother Ben, opened the Dwarf Grill (now the Dwarf House) near the Ford Motor Company Atlanta Assembly Plant. In 1960, when his second Dwarf Grill location was accidentally burned down, Truett Cathy was forced to rethink his business. • 15. Summary Of All Quiet On The Western Front By Nicolo... When you do something wrong and you are afraid of the consequences, there is usually one parent that you would prefer to get scolded by. This is because they are the one that is more lenient or clement, as opposed to cruel. In All Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque and The Prince by Nicolo Machiavelli, the question of whether it is better to be cruel or clement arises. Machiavelli devises that leaders should strive to be considered clement over cruel for a few reasons. In the book by Erich Remarque, there is a leader named Himmelstoss that Machiavelli could dissect based on the beginning description of him. Machiavelli would determine that Himmelstoss is cruel because he does not give his troops any mercy and by doing so, has garnered their hatred of him. Machiavelli would determine Himmelstoss as cruel due to the lack of mercifulness he gives to his subordinates. When Himmelstoss found out that the character Tjaden wet his bed when he slept at night, instead of giving him a shake down or something similar, a more sinister plan formulated in his mind, He hunted up another piss a bed ... and quartered him with Tjaden. Himmelstoss put these two so that one occupied the upper and the other the lower bunk. The man underneath of course had a vile time. The next night they were changed over and the lower one put on top so that he could retaliate. (Remarque 46).Himmelstoss cruelty is highlighted masterfully here. Instead of simply yelling at Tjaden or making him scrub boots till his hands bled, he devised an atrocious way of punishment. Further adding to his sense of cruelty, Himmelstoss includes another soldier in an attempt to demoralize and humiliate both of them.Clemency, even in a small form, can have a big impact. Too much clemency, and the people run rampant. Too little, and there isn t a people to lead. Himmelstoss clearly leans more toward one side when he should be seeking a balance between the two, Therefore a prince, so long as he keeps his subjects united and loyal, ought not to mind the reproach of cruelty; because with a few examples he will be more merciful than those, who through too much mercy, allow disorders to arise... Tracheids cells are long, thin, and are connected together by tapered ends. The tapered ends run alongside each other and have pits. • 17. The Benefits Of Education In This Is Water By David Foster... Many high school students have grown jaded with the modern education system, sitting for hours in a classroom almost every day having seemingly useless information crammed into their brains. At some point, the curiosity died and left behind the average student of today. Most people will agree that a change must occur within the way the youth receives an education; however, fewer people have touched on the concept that the students must change their mindsets as well. They must all look beyond the surface level education that teachers tend to focus on and understand what more they can gain. Throughout David Foster Wallaces speech This is Water, Wallace primarily employs didactic little parable ish stories along with hyperbolic examples to enforce the idea that the true benefits of education come from learning simple awareness rather than knowledge. Almost immediately, Wallace inserts the opening to the story that gives his speech a title, speaking about two young fish that eventually come across an an older fish who asks them the oddly perplexing question of how s the water? . He then goes on to explain that somehow, the fish do not understand the obvious fact that they live in the water, it surrounds them. This story serves as an introduction to the point Wallace hopes to give his audience, that a liberal artseducation is not so much about filling you up with knowledge as it is about quote teaching you how to think. By the second stanza, the speaker regrets that he cannot take both paths and could not travel both (735). With this realization, he decides to evaluate each path. As humans are social beings, thorough understanding of the language is essential for coherent and correct communication that can lead to good, clear transmission of ideas, meanings and subtle nuances the way people intend to. In former times, humans relied on symbols and drawings to make their messages known, their system of communicationbeing quite rudimentary compared to what we have today, when the languagehas seen an accelerated development and has grown into such broad directions that people cannot even possibly know the entire array of meanings and significations. In the following, the paper will go through a list of words, trying to explain what they mean and give examples of their uses. Idiom simply said, an idiom is a construction of words that has a figurative meaning, different from the meanings of the words that build it. However, the figurative meaning of an idiom is not necessarily predictable from the direct meanings of its components. To illustrate this main aspect, perhaps the best well known example is: It s raining cats and dogs . Here, there is clearly absolutely no reference to the animals mentioned, what the idiom points out is that it s heavily raining. The English language (both British and American) has thousands of idioms, this showing just how heavily important they are to the language. Another, more direct meaning of the word idiom would be synonym to dialect , the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 39. Science-Fiction Films During The 1950 s The science fiction film genre serves as an excellent medium for examining shifting power structures, social paranoia and Cold War politics during the 1950s. A number of films released during this period, including: Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951), Them (1954) and Attack of the 50ft Woman (1958), are particularly symptomatic of the social and political atmosphere of the time. These films navigate not only narrative based issues such as the threat of aliens and science experiments gone wrong; but also wider issues of the time, such as the Cold War, changes in the US filmindustry, urbanisation, politics, the growing power of women and most significantly, social concern about nuclear energy. Before analysing individual science fiction films from the 1950s, it is important to gain a clear understanding of the social, cultural and political background against which these films were set. Paranoia is a term frequently used to describe an acute, anxiety dominated medical condition (Paranoia, 2009), however in the context of 1950 s America, this term can be used more accurately to describe the general, delusionary mood of the nation. The first important event that influenced a paranoiac filmmaking atmosphere was the Cold War. As opposed to the hot war (WWII) that involved active military hostilities, the Cold War was based on heightened tension and suspicions between Western Bloc (USA) powers and Eastern Bloc (Soviet Union) powers (The ... • 40. Wildfires Research Paper Wildfires have played an important role in shaping history. They have shaped private islands and public areas. Even though wildfires have destroyed thousands of acres of land and killed millions of people, humans still start these furies of fire either on accident or on purpose. Also, many times people have started controlled burns which people use for different reasons. Sometimes, wildfires are not as bad as some people may think. Even if someone is caught in a wildfire, preparing and getting out is not hard at all. Humans may not always be ready for a wildfire, but they do know how to stop one. Wildfires are misunderstood by some people, some think they only happen on purpose, others think that wildfires happen very rarely, but ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... But that s not true at all. Firefighters sometimes start a wildfire on purpose, which is called a controlled burn. The controlled burning started in 1995 by the US Forest service. Controlled burns are wildfires that have their speed, intensity, and location of the wildfire. These wildfires are controlled by removing or adding fuel. Controlled burns happen to eliminate flammable fuels like dry leaves so a real wildfire doesn t happen, restore the health in the ecosystem, recycle nutrients and to prepare an area for planting or new vegetation. Controlled burns don t happen very often, which means they aren t bad for the air.If a controlled burn is hard to control or a wildfire has started, Firefighters may do something called Back Burning . Back burning is used to eliminate fuels for the fire in the direction it s going. For example, if a wildfire is heading north, then fire fighters will make a back burn north of that fire. When firefighters back burn, they make small fires to make it harder for the main fire to get more fuel and easier to put it out. Back burns are used in combination with controlled burns to limit an area to that controlled burn. The US Forest service decides when and how to do controlled burns by finding out what vegetation needs to and doesn t need to be burnt, what intensity the fire has to be at, considering the history of burning in the area, determining the time of day to start the burn, and finding the quality of the moisture and the fuels in the area. Controlled burns are very safe. Very much planning goes into controlled burns, so it will be very hard to lose control, but it still happens. So controlled burns are a lot more useful than people ... It s Time to Make Drugs Legal for Personal Use Essay It s Time to Make Drugs Legal for Personal Use Drugs are such a controversy and people have such strong opinions about whether they should be legal or illegal. I don t have a strong opinion on this topic; I m easily swayed. For the most part though, I think that they should be legalized because people do it anyways and if they were legal the government could regulate their use and sale more, the government should be receiving the profits of the drug business rather than dealers, marijuana has most of the same effects as cigarettes, and it s been proven over and over how prohibition doesn t seem to work. Each year, the government wastes $20 billion dollars on the war against drugs, but it doesn t seem to do any good (Liberty For ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most important thing for me is that people do it anyways; they always have and most likely always will. Drug prohibition has not stopped 30 million people from trying cocaine and 60 million people from trying marijuana. Prohibition also has not stopped the number of heroin users from increasing by 150% and the number of cocaine users from increasing by 10,000%. Moreover, prohibition has not kept drugs out of the hands of children: in 1988 54% of high school seniors admitted to having tried illicit drugs; 88% said it was fairly easy or very easy to obtain marijuana: and 54% said the same about cocaine (Boaz 229). Nobody can deny these facts, and these are even facts from the times where the war on drugs was passing stricter laws. None of the laws seemed to make a difference accept if you get caught with drugs, you have a longer sentence. The sentence for marijuana possession usually averages longer than a murder sentence. I really don t think it s worse to have marijuana than kill another human being; that doesn t even begin to make sense to me. I think that, like many other things in history, drugs will someday be legal. I mean coffee, gin, and tobacco all used to be illegal, but now all are in regular use in the United States. The Netherlands, who is the only country I know to legalize marijuana, surprisingly has a lower percentage of 10th graders who have tried marijuana when compared to the United States. One such tale, over a thousand years old, stands out from all the rest: Beowulf, the tale of a great warrior, on his quest to achieve eternal glory, defeating great opponents. Throughout the whole story, Beowulf demonstrates most if not all of the qualities that an archetypal hero possesses. Another obvious heroic characteristic that Beowulf portrays is the defeat of monsters and other malevolence. He does this throughout the story, not only using brute force, but also cunning tactics, such as the time when he attacks Grendel s extremely sensitive ears. Beowulf also disposes of Grendel s Mother, using a gigantic sword in her lair to decapitate her, and ends the reign of terror on the Danes. Years later, after Beowulf is crowned King, his land is assailed by the Dragon. It is a long, hard fought battle, in which Beowulf contests with all his might. Beowulf ultimately kills the Dragon rips out its heart , but not without a price; the battle costs the King his life. • 49. Nosferatu Outcome One Analysis Outcome One is the ability to write in a way that reaches one s intended audience. That means the author must understand the differences between audiences, genres, and formal versus informal writing. For instance, while writing a movie review, the author assumes the reader has not seen the movie. Therefore, to be able to reach the intended audience, the author must summarize the movie s plot and specific scenes to familiarize the reader before they reveal why they liked or disliked the film. Outcome One is important because if one does not take their audience into account, it can produce inconsistencies that lead the audience to be confused on the paper s intended purpose. A formal paper should address the audience respectfully, and if a writer were to constantly use slang within the piece, it could be regarded as being disrespectful. ...
