RESEARCH
Some strengths of my research were the investigation into
many varying artists who all came from several different
genres. This allowed me to gather the best and worst
aspects of both Polish and English music videos and use
what I found constructively helpful from the English
speaking videos in my video which was primarily supposed
to derive from Polish music. This included borrowing colour
conventions and mood conventions from American/British
music to put a twist on the Polish genre conventions.
A weakness of my research is that I didn’t zone in on too
many relevant artists to Artur Rojek specifically. Artists in
his circle are all still anonymous to me and any further
contextual information on him may have affected my end
product, when considering artist intent. Therefore, if I were
to try to improve upon my piece, I would have a closer look
into Polish pop and specifically male solo artists, as well as
just some further looks into Rojek’s social agendas etc to
produce a piece which is more synonymous with what Rojek
would desire his work to be presented through.
PLANNING
Strengths of my planning included the original concepts and
mind-mapping. Though in my end product I didn’t
necessarily stick so directly to the original plans, they
allowed me to set the basis for the shots I needed to collect
and acted as a guideline of how the piece would be put
together to create meaning.
Planning allowed me to resolve precisely what time and
resources I would need to put aside for the project, as well
as allowing me to dissect my song to better structure an
idea for what shots would be needed so I could work as
efficiently as possible.
A weakness of my planning could be considered to be my
visual mapping of specific shots. This is due to the fact that
I prefer to figure my shots out on location so that I can
adjust the location of the camera in relation to the
actress/actor based on all factors at the time and how the
position affects the need to adjust aperture, focus and white
balance etc. Still, to better improve this, I could’ve included
more detailed plannings for how my
TIME MANAGEMENT
I would say that I managed my time reasonably well,
considering all the different factors that being capable of
filming often rely on. In terms of shooting, I was able to
get most of it done during a single shoot, due to the
plan that I had set out prior.
If I had more time to produce my work, however, I would
likely have put it into polishing the overall quality of the
video and ensuring that any shots that made it to the
final cut were of a more professional quality. This would
have likely also meant managing my resources so that I
could get a camera which would perform better in the
dark, or taking the time to set up my own older camera. I
would also put more time into refining the pacing of the
song by being more selective with where I cut segments
and I would have taken more shots overall to ensure that
every gap in the video could be filled with excess
footage, to not have certain shots drag on for too long
that don’t add much consistency.
TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
CAMERA
DAWID PODSIADLO – TROYKATY I
KWADRATY
In both Podsiadlo’s production
and my own, there are links to
Polish Pop Genre Conventions. In
terms of camera, we both used
ultrawide shots in our videos. We
also used extravagant colours
which are relatively non-
naturalistic and involved our shots
in indoor settings. We also both
involved our lip syncing subject in
the middle of many of our shots,
setting them as the main focus.
Differences in our pieces are
involved mainly in the several
creative angles attempted in
Podsiadlo’s work. I opted for
naturalistic angles to keep the
piece grounded and coherent in
some way. Podsiadlo’s take helps
contribute to the genre and
makes the piece seem a bit less
linear, allowing the shots to be
differentiated better and overall
providing higher entertainment
value. This is something I would
enjoy taking note from, if I were
to attempt this work again. Lens
TECHNICAL QUALITIES –
EDITING/POST
DAWID PODSIADLO – TROYKATY I
KWADRATY
In terms of editing and post,
probably the most notable
similarity is that we haven’t
added too many extra effects to
both our pieces. For instance,
neither piece includes any
surrealistic CGI features or high
edits in the piece through
animation etc. Otherwise, there
are little similarities in editing.
Podsiadlo’s piece is edited to be
very fluid and smooth when
transitioning between moments
and every shot mirrors the next
in one way or another. I would
enjoy taking prompts from this
if I were to do my piece again,
however I feel as though the
hard cuts between shots allows
for them to be better
understood as separate events,
which in turn aids the idea of
me having one piano sequence
set in a warmer, more old
AESTHETIC QUALITIES
I enjoyed the original themes and ideas behind my piece. I
think the idea of it being set between two very polar
opposite piano sequences with surrealist moments to fill the
gaps was a very appropriate route to take. In hindsight, I
would’ve involved the shots of the warmer, more authentic
piano more to give it an equal part in the song, further
solidifying the contrast but otherwise I am happy.
I enjoy the slow motion shot and other shots taken during
the lighting changes, though I admit certain of those shots
dip quite significantly in quality. Another thing I would fix
with time.
I think a strength of my piece’s aesthetics was how raw it
was and how straight forward it was too, not
overcomplicated by too many ideas or animations or
transitions etc.
I think where it fell flat slightly was the execution of
gathering specific shots and the transitions between them
on occasion too, something that could be resolved with
more time for consideration.
AUDIENCE APPEAL
I think my piece would appeal to its target audience. I
think the fact that the main subject is a member of the
target age group helps massively with relatability. I think
that the use of very abstract colouring in certain parts of
the song is fun and when contrasted with naturalism, it
creates a very digestible video for people of that age
range. I think it’s vibrant and positive enough to appeal
to the healthy mindset of the youth age group and I think
that the dancing moments are great reminders of the fun
that is had around that age, contributing to the already
very positive music that overlays my piece.
I would maybe add more intertextuality in hindsight, to
contribute some more relatability for the audience,
perhaps some subtle referencing to popular culture but
otherwise I think I did enough to keep it appealing to my
target audience.
PEER
FEEDBACK
FEEDBACK 1
What did you like about the product?
 I really enjoyed sequences with LED lights in them. I think it looked
very aesthetically appealing, as well as made a good fit for the
positive sounding of the song.
 - dance sequences benefited from slow-motion effect being added
on top of them, it makes the footage more interesting and adds to
the dreamy atmosphere of the overall product.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
If the product were meant to be made again, in my
opinion it should feature a male actor who would
perform male sequences instead of the female actress
featured in the product.
I would also like to see more sequences with the old
looking piano, from what I saw it did not quite connect
with the overall product and looked a little out of place.
FEEDBACK 2
What did you like about the product?
 I enjoyed the overall feel of the video. The lighting changes between
shots were not too hectic and made a nice contrast against the shots
with the piano which were more realistic.
 I thought the transitions in the videos were nice at the beginning and
end too. They made it so the piece didn’t feel so abrupt.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
If you were to redo anything in the piece, it’d probably
be a good idea to focus on fixing the quality of the
video, especially in the dark.
It would also be good to see some shots of other
locations or more camera techniques.
FEEDBACK 3
What did you like about the product?
 I enjoyed the dance sequences. I thought they were fun and vibrant
 I enjoyed the slow motion shot and how the shots seemed to speed
up as it went on
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
 Include more variation in locations
 More different activities for the actress to be doing
 More different types of shots and angles and different transitions also
PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
What do you agree with from your peer feedback?
As a generalisation, I agree with near to all of my feedback. I think I
could have included further variation in almost all aspects of my piece,
perhaps had some separate sequences set in a different area. This was
likely as I didn’t anticipate how long 3 minutes really is when you are
attempting to retain the engagement of the audience.
What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?
Overall, there’s generally nothing I completely disagree with out of the
feedback, I think it was all constructive. I wouldn’t necessarily change
the main subject to be male, as I think that contributes in some ways
to the piece, as surreal or absurd as it may be. I also think that it’s
ambiguous enough to not take you out of the piece but could
completely understand would others would take it a different way.
PEER FEEDBACK SUMMARY
I would add more different kinds of shots and far more transition
types.
I would show the subject in more locations and have them linked to
the piece.
I would have the subject appear more in the 2nd location as to make it
absolutely clear of the contrast I intended to make.
I would consider different candidates for the main subject and whether
a male candidate would be better.
I would retake shots that come out in too low of a quality, making sure
to use appropriate cameras.
I would make sure to collect a larger array of shots in future in case I
find I don’t particularly enjoy a certain aspect of one, so that I have a
larger catalogue of stock to work from.
