BANGLADESH GOODS
HOW THIS ARE INCREASES
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has forally said Dhaka International Trade Fair
(DITF) 2016 at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka.
"You (businessmen) have to explore new markets in other countries to increase the
export from Bangladesh,“
"We have reputations for our products. Once we exported jute products in many
countries. It's your duty to create opportunity for new products," she added
BY WHICH WAY IT WAS INCREASED
This year around 22 countries have confirmed their participation in the fair being
organized by the Export Promotion Bureau.
This fair has been an important annual business platform in boosting trade and
investment over the years.
TARGET OF EXPORT ORDER
The DITF-2015 bagged export orders worth Tk 85 crore, and the target for this year is
Tk 100 crore worth of export orders.
LEATHER AND LEATHER GOODS
Bangladesh has a long established tanning industry which produces around 2-3% of
the world’s leather from a ready supply of raw materials.
The leather industry is ideally suited to Bangladesh with its abundance of labor and
natural resources at internationally competitive rates.
SECTOR HIGHLIGHTS
• Good quality domestic supply of raw materials, as by-products of large livestock
industry.
• Government support in the form of tax holidays, duty free imports of raw materials
and machinery for export-oriented leather market, export incentives.
• Tariff and quota free access to major markets such as the EU
INDUSTRY OUTLOOK AND INVESTMENT
INCENTIVES
• The government is in the process of setting up a separate Leather Zone, relocating
the existing industry sites to a well-organised environment. Exports include some
ready-made garments, although that aspect is confined mainly to a small export
trade in "Italian-make" garments for the US market. Footwear is more important in
terms of value addition. This is the fast growing sector for leather products.
