Editor's Notes
After doing quite a bit of research into different genres I have decided that I am going to make a video for a Power Ballad. I have decided to look at this genre due to the fact that I quite like the narrative that is included in the videos; this makes the video more relatable with the audience.
Due to the fact that I have extensively looked into Power Ballads I have decided that I would like to produce a music video for the sub-genre, pop power ballads, I have decided to look at this sub-genre over some of the other sub-genres that are included in power ballads, like rock power ballads because of the fact that personally I prefer the softer sound that you get from a pop power ballad over other sub-genres in this genre. This is evident in the music video that I have looked at ‘Westlife-Mandy’. Over the rockier feel of the rock ballad of Aerosmith’s I don’t want to miss a thing.
In addition to this I have decided to look into this sub-genre because of the fact that pop was one if the genre that I initially looked into, because of this I feel I have a pretty good understanding of the codes and conventions that I could include when producing my music video.
There are three different types of music that I could chose from when producing my own music video, these types include, narrative, performance, and concept. I could have chosen to produce a video that was one of these types of these types but I have decided to combine narrative and performance when producing my music video. I have decided that most of my video is going to be narrative based but I am going to cut up the narrative with a few performance shots/frames. This would likely include the artists in my music video singing (miming) straight into the camera.
There are five different styles of music video that I could have chosen to make a music video for, these are, classical, nihilist, romantic, postmodern, and socially conscious. I have decided to make a music video that is romantic, this decision is influenced by the genre I have chosen which his power ballads. This is because of the fact that most of the power ballad songs I have came across are about love or relationship and I feel this style of music video would be perfect for that.
Codes and conventions that would come with making a video that is performance based music video would include the artist singing into the camera so that the audience get an understanding of how they would look if they were to go and see them live. As a result of this the performance sequences of the video that I am going to make I will keep certain features of my music video quite natural such as the lighting, the hair/makeup, and the costume. This will prove as quite a nice contrast to the main part of the music video which will be narrative based as I am going to take inspiration from Beyoncé’s If I was a boy and make the narrative sequences in my music video black and white/ greyscale.
Due to the fact that I am going to be producing a music video for a pop power ballads means that I am able to combine some of the codes and conventions that you would expect to find in pop music video such as the different camera shots that I could use for example, close up on the artist.
After all the different research that I did into the power ballad genre and all the different music videos I chose I decided that I was going to narrow it down to three potential songs that could have been interesting to work with. These songs were:
Family Portrait – Pink
Beautiful – Christina Aguilera
Mad World – Gary Jules
There was complete different reasons why I chose the different songs I did for example;
The reason why I chose Pink’s Family Portrait was I had a few ideas how I could adapt the video that has already been created for this video where it shows the effects of a dysfunctional family on a child, I would have adapted this by showing a purely narrative based video on how the break down in the relationship of parents could effect children involved. As a part of this I would have shown how this situation could effect different people from different backgrounds such as, children with gay/lesbian parents, rich/poor families, or families with different ethnicities, and it could have potentially effected them differently and how the different children reacted to the different parents moving on with their lives.
The reason I chose Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful was for completely different reasons as Pink’s Family Portrait. I chose this song for completely emotional reasons, what I mean by this is the fact that the songs relates to me as the message behind the video that all should be accepted for how they are and no one should be made to they don’t belong. I can relate to this because of the fact that I have struggled with this knowing who I am and where I belong in the past so I feel I would be able to produce a narrative based music video that packs just as much of an emotional punch as the original.
I choose to have Gary Jules’ Mad World as one of my choices as the mood of the music was quite different from the other songs that I chose, I have described it as this because of the fact that the music for other songs is reasonably upbeat with a somewhat fast tempo as I wanted to have a song that was a bit slower so my audience could fully appreciate the lyrics of the song. When I chose to have this song as one of my choices I didn’t have any ideas of where I could take the music video but after listening to the lyrics quite a few times I am thinking about basing my music video of domestic violence and the emotional consequences that it has on the people that are involved.
