1. Question 1.
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media products ?
2. I made a collage of some of the main scenes
within my video. I put 16 images together
to show some of the main scenes within the
music video. I choose shots which
represented some of the locations,
costumes, editing, style of the video and the
genre. In each slide I explain how each shot
challenges or develops common
conventions and have some slides which
have direct links between the costumes,
settings, editing and style.
3. - For my locations I used locations which were accessible to
get to. I also used locations which were real to life. I chose
small set of locations as commonly in similar music video
conventions there are only a small number of locations
used and many shots are repeated. I wanted to follow this.
- For the hospital scenes I used a location which I had to get
permission for and it had to be approved, this was a
challenge however I wanted to make the video real to life. I
feel using this theme develops on common video
conventions.
- I used a forest location because I liked the aspect of dance
within my video. I felt like this challenges common
conventions are normally dance is found in the pop genre
not the indie / alternative genre. I wanted to do something
which was different but had a meaning behind it.
4. - This is one of the first shots that I used. I used this one
because it had an ere feel to it. I used a colour
corrector on the scene to make the clip look more dull
and depressing. I did this to make it look more like
classic music videos within the genre, for example in
Alt-J’s video Breezeblocks the colour is edited to add
the affect of a dark storyline.
- The font I used was a simple basic font, this is because
after looking at common genre conventions this was
the common theme.
- The location was a wintery location as I wanted the
weather to look dull and miserable.
- I wanted a costume which made the actor look casual
and I wanted a shot where she looked sad as this is a
location which is used later in the music video when
she was still with her boyfriend. Therefore I wanted
this shot to look dismal and bland.
5. - I used dancing shots within my video to challenge conventions. Not
many videos have a dance theme within their videos. The costume
used was just an average dance leotard however, I chose the burgundy
colour as it seemed more winter related.
- I used the dancing to express the story and express the actors
emotions throughout the video. I wanted the dance theme to seem like
an escape from reality.
- I used a colour corrector on the clips to make them seem more dull
and have a muted colour to them. I did this to add different emotions
to the video and because in similar music videos the colour is often
edited.
- On some clips I also added a ‘ghosting’ affect using premier pro to add
some difference to the video. I also felt like it made the dance move
seem more moving and emotional.
- When filming these clips I considered the location and wanted a winter
looking place and wanted a sunny day to add the camera glare on the
6. - I used typical outfits within my video. I
planned it this way because I wanted it
to show life as it is and therefore these
costumes seemed most appropriate. I
went for basic everyday clothes which
made the video seem like it was based
upon their lives (as it was).
- I wanted the dancer to be dressed in a
burgundy leotard as a deep red
connotes emotion and sadness which
represents how she felt.
- The hospital gown seemed best
appropriate as it fitted with the
storyline well.
- I don’t feel like this challenged nor
developed common conventions, as I
feel like in most music videos the
costume is directed to fit the narrative.
7. - The location used in these scenes was a
real hospital location. It was the Nuffield in
Bournemouth. I used this location because
in real life music videos there is always real
locations used to make it look as real to life
as it can be. I decided to go for a hospital
because I wanted my video to be emotional
and many music videos within a similar
genre are normally sad.
- In the shots I used from the hospital, I used a
colour corrector upon them to make them have
a slight blue colour, I did this because blue is
commonly associated with sadness and being
ill. I did this because I wanted to add some real
life to the video. I wanted to conform with
common conventions and make the video fit in
with others similar.
- Within these scenes I dressed the female actor in
normal everyday clothes to represent the situation
as being real to life. Then I dressed the male actor in
a hospital outfit because I wanted it to seem like he
was really there and wanted the video to seem
legitimate. I choose this because it made it seem like
he had been in hospital for a while and will be there
for a while longer.
- The props I used within the location
are ones which you would typically
find in a hospital, I used a wheelchair
and also the hospital bed plus the
crutches. This was all used to add
another theme of realism to the video.
I felt this was conforming to common
conventions.
• Overall, with the hospital scenes I
believe I didn’t challenge common
conventions because
stereotypically videos within this
genre have a sad and glum feel to
them making the audience feel a
certain emotion towards the
video which is what I tired to
recreate.
8. - The style of my video is very narrative based. I did this
because I wanted there to story told within the video
and take the audience on a journey. I also did this
because when doing genre research I found that many of
the similar videos within the same genre also were
heavily narrative based and therefore I wanted to use
common conventions within my video as well.
- Although throughout my video I wanted to have some
concept within which is why I added the dancing into it.
The dancing very much challenged common conventions
as not many videos have dancing within them especially
within this genre. The concept behind it was that it was
emotional to the video and that people have activities in
their lives which help them to get away from certain
situation which was hard to explain within the narrative.
9. - Within these scenes I used the same location as in the beginning of the
video I did this because I wanted some repetition of locations. When doing
my genre research I found that commonly there is little variety of shots
within videos therefore making it easy to repeat shots. I did this as well to
fit with common conventions.
- I used the colour corrector again, on the shot with the female on her own I
made the colour slightly darker red and pink. The setting is fairly dark
anyways making her seem upset. I contrasted the shot of them together as
it is much lighter however in the same location. I did this because I wanted
to show two different times and emotions.
- I also added a blur as I wanted the audience to feel like her emotions were a
blur and she was confused about how she felt at the moment in time.
