Antisocial personality disorder is a mental condition in which a person consistently shows no regard for right and wrong and ignores the rights and feelings of others.
Dissociative disorders (DD) are conditions that involve disruptions or breakdowns of memory, awareness, identity, or perception.
People with dissociative disorders use dissociation, a defence mechanism, pathologically and involuntarily. Dissociative disorders are thought to primarily be caused by psychological trauma.

Multiple Personalities
Multiple personalities is a rare mental disorder in which an individual's personality appears to be separated by two or more specific personalities, all being connectable to that of a normal individual.
Incidence
Statistics show that the rate of DID occurrences are roughly .01% to 1% of the general population.
-More than 1/3 of people say that they feel as if they are watching themselves in a movie at times, and 7% of the population may have undiagnosed dissociative disorder.
Causes
The causes of multiple personalities disorder is controversial. The debate of many different hypothesis include:
-Could possibly be a reaction to a trauma.
-An innate ability to dissociate easily.
-Repeated episodes of severe physical or sexual abuse
as a child.
-The lack of supportive or comforting people to counteract
abusive relationships.
-The influence of other relatives with dissociative
symptoms or disorders.
Symptoms
According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, symptoms include "the presence or two or more distinct identities or personality traits"that alternate control of the individuals behavior, accompanied by the inability to recall personal information beyond what is expected through normal forgetfulness.

Diagnosis
There is not real way to determine whether or not a person has DID. Many physicians have different outlooks on what DID is and what determines if a patient has the disorder or not. Most are misdiagnosed as depressed. But the average DID patient is in the mental health care system for 6 to 7 years before being diagnosed as a person with DID.
-The criteria, according to the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, require that an adult be recurrently controlled by two or more discrete personalities, accompanied my memory lapses for important information that is not caused by alcohol, drugs, or medications.

A rare dissociative disorder in which two or
more personalities with distinct memories
and behavior patterns apparently exist in one
individual.
4. CAUSES
Genetics. Researchers are beginning to
identify some possible genetic factors
behind personality disorders.
One team, for instance, has identified a
mal-functioning gene that may be a factor
in obsessive-compulsive disorder.
5. Childhood trauma:
One study found a link between the
number and type of childhood traumas
and the development of personality
disorders. People with borderline
personality disorder, for example, had
especially high rates of childhood trauma.
6. Verbal abuse: Even verbal abuse can
have an impact. Children who had
experienced such verbal abuse were three
times as likely as other children to have
borderline personality disorders in
adulthood.

depression and anxiety

Arises from continued and repeated sexual
and/or physical abuse beginning in early
childhood.
People with DID have been shown to be
highly susceptible to dissociation, of above
average intelligence, and highly creative.
13. Four times as many women are diagnosed as
men.
The average person diagnosed with DID spends
7 years in the mental health system before
being properly diagnosed, due to misdiagnosis
and lack of training on the part of therapists to
spot the disorder.

involving focused attention and reduced
peripheral awareness and an enhanced capacity

Hypnosis may help patients recover repressed
ideas and memories.

Certain factors can help prevent children
from developing personality disorders.
Even a single strong relationship with
a relative, teacher or friend can offset
negative influences, say psychologists.
