Multiple Gestation
DEFINITION
It is a condition that describes a woman's pregnancy
with more than one fetus in the same pregnancy.
Multiple names are given to the process of multiple
births according to the number of offspring that
result. Having two or three children is the most
common form of multiple birth, the two conditions
called, respectively: twins and triplets.
HOW DO MULTIPLE PREGNANCIES HAPPEN?
Multiple pregnancies occur when more than one
embryo implants in your uterus (womb). This can
happen if you release more than one egg during
the menstrual cycle and each egg is fertilised by
a sperm. Sometimes, a fertilised egg
spontaneously splits into 2, resulting in identical
embryos.
What increases the chance of a multiple pregnancy?
There are several factors that can increase the risk of a
multiple birth.
1- Are older (women in their 30s are at a higher risk of
multiples because the body starts to release multiple eggs
at one time when you get older)
2- Are using fertility drugs.
3- risk factor for a multiple pregnancy is genetic.
DIAGNOSIS OF MULTIPLE PREGNANCY
1- You gain weight rapidly at the start of the pregnancy.
2- You have severe morning sickness.
3- More than one heartbeat is picked up during a prenatal
examination.
4- The uterus is larger than expected.
TYPES OF MULTIPLE PREGNANCY
1- Fraternal twins
Two separate eggs are fertilised and implant in the uterus.
2- Identical twins
Identical twins are formed when a single fertilised egg is split in half.
3- Triplets and 'higher order multiples' (HOMs)
Triplets, quadruplets, quintuplets, sextuplets or
more can be a combination both of identical
and fraternal multiples. For example, triplets
can be either fraternal (trizygotic), forming
from 3 individual eggs that are fertilised and
implanted in the uterus
CARE AND MANAGEMENT OF MULTIPLE PREGNANCY
1.Increased nutrition
2.Increased rest
3.Maternal and fetal testing
