- 9. 9 VERIFICATION Framework A framework to verify sustainable beef is being developed by the CRSB Indicator and Verification Committees. We are planning to launch our Verification Framework in 2017.
- 10. 10 Indicators for Beef Operations The first draft of indicators went for public consultation and the feedback as been reviewed and implemented as appropriate. The 2nd draft of indicators are being tested on beef operations this fall and then will go for a 2nd round of public consultations Indicators for Processing Facilities Indicators from the McDonald’s Pilot Project have been shared and the indicator committee will begin developing CRSB indicators this fall Assurance Manual Committee input has been attained regarding topics included within the assurance manual, a first draft of the assurance manual has been developed and will go out to the committee this fall for review Verification Framework Status Update Come to CRSB AGM Oct. 7th for full committee update Chain of Custody & Claims The Verification Committee has supplied input regarding chain of custody and claims first drafts of the chain of custody and claims guidance documents need to be developed Equivalency Protocols to establish equivalency between programs are currently being drafted Marketing and Communications The CRSB communications committee is being re- purposed to help develop the marketing and communications plan for verified sustainable beef

- The Canadian beef industry spans the country, with beef producers located in every province. In total there are 68,500 beef farms, including cow-calf, background and feedlot operations. Over 98% of beef farms are family owned and operated. Cow-calf operations, that sell cattle into background and feedlot operations, tend to have smaller herd numbers as they utilize extensive rangelands across the country. The average cow-calf herd is 63 mother cows. Feedlot operations, where cattle are finished on a grain diet, are larger operations, typically ranging between 500-20,000 head. While beef cattle herds are spread across Canada, feedlot production is focused in Western Canada, with Alberta accounting for 70% of total production. Processing and packaging facilities are also western-focused, representing 86% of total Canadian beef production. The Canadian beef industry predominately produces a grass fed, grain finished product from a base Bos taurus (European breeds) herd. These two main contributing factors support the production of high quality products and enable Canadian producers to sell into 58 markets around the world. Producing more than 1.2 million tonnes of beef annually, Canada is the 6th largest exporter of boxed beef and 5th largest exporter of beef and cattle in the world. The Canadian beef industry contributes more than $41 billion to the Canadian economy and generates 228,000 jobs.

- Encourage people to come to our AGM on Friday to hear all about the update on our verification framework. As soon as the conference is over the development of the verification framework is our key area of focus Thank-you to McDonald’s for all of the heavy lifting.
- The key elements to a verification framework are firstly to have a set of standards or indicators, which we have, and are currently being set to be released for the second round of public consultation this fall. An assurance manual is needed. This is the massive document that describes how we are going to score the indicators. It will describe what audit cycles are needed, what are the auditor requirements and any training that is needed. Chain of custody and claims guidelines will be developed. Different chain of custody models will be included now as this is bigger than just McDonald’s hamburgers. Chain of custody refers to the traceability of the product and how the information is passed from stage to stage. The chain of custody and claims guidelines will reflect different claims that retailers and food service companies can use. It is important to define what the value chain will be able to say about sustainable beef. This does not however prevent a retailer or food service company from creating their own niche marketing plan highlighting whichever attributes that they wish but if they want to use the sustainable beef claim only, it must follow our guidelines. Finally, equivalency benchmarking is going to be key. We need a process to determine equivalency within current programs and existing tools. The goal is to not create new burdens on anyone along the value chain but instead to streamline and coordinate many of the tools we are all using today. It is important to note that this framework is a process. We are following the International Social and Environmental Accreditation and Labelling or ISEAL Alliance Codes and guidelines to ensure we follow good practices when we are developing the framework. In order to follow this internationally accepted standard for labelling, we estimate the framework will be completed by end of 2017.
